Title: RNS 510 VerC, CanBus update/Battery Drain issue
Post by: apples12 on December 23, 2010, 09:09:48 am
Hi all,

Well, decided to spring for an RNS 510 Ver C unit, and I've got a couple of questions:

My car is a 2005/05 Mk5 Golf, I'm assuming I will have this 'battery drain' issue thats common when installing these 3rd Gen head units into cars which originally came with 2nd Gen units (RCD300 etc)?

And the only fix for this is to install a new CanBus Gateway of Rev.K or later?

Can this canbus gateway be from a passat or another VW car or must it be from a Golf?

Also, will i need to change any other modules etc to get it to show the information from the nav unit (radio/nav instructions) in the MFD?

and for those of you who already have the unit, is it possible to directly read MP3's off the SD card or must they be transferred over to the unit's HDD before playback?

thanks

go for the newest canbus AH.
no, you can't use a passat canbus, must be same platform.
yes you can read mp3 from SD  :happy2:

You can on the revision B RNS use an older version software but why when all you need to do is fit the newest gateway??

Hi,
I've actually bought the Ver.C unit, cost me 468 altogether, looks like its gna be another 50quid for the canbus gateway i guess...looks like a visit to the scrappy is due

I've already fitted my highline cluster, the shopping list just keeps growing for this damn thing! a new canbus gateway, new highline CECM, new highline CCM too

i'm assuming if i purchase and fit the things in that order, canbus/cecm/ccm i won't really lose any functionality right? in the sense that, i'll get everything from the RNS after fitting it, the canbus will fix the battery drain issue, and then what will the highline cecm and ccm achieve for me in terms of the RNS unit? (What im trying to ask is, how much of the functionality of the RNS unit depends on having highline CECM and CCM installed?

neither of the cecm or ccm will give you anything towards the features on the RNS,What they will give you is the lighting functions on the highline and the ccm will give you the comfort functions on the highline.

The cecm is not really essential to be honest.

on Darrens behalf; Yes you are right, only Highline has these functions, so yet a part to save money for  :happy2:

HI everyone, many thanks for the replies!

So am I right in thinking that this 'battery drain issue' is effectively...

1. Install RNS 510 in pre 2007 (pre K CanBus controller) golf

2. park the car up, don't drive for 36-48 hours, and the battery drains?

soo..... on the assumption that the car is driven daily about 80miles or so, mix of motorway and inner city, i shouldn't really experience the drain until i leave the car for over 24hours standing off correct?

(i'm curious if this will be ok as a 'stop-gap' until I can get a hold of the can gateway) the breaker i got my highline cluster off has the other highline parts for the golf, but i'm off on holiday on sunday until second week of jan so gta put it on hold!)

thanks

Hi,

Can someone kindly confirm for me if the following gateway is suitable:

http://cgi.ebay.de/VW-Golf-5-AUDI-A3-8P-GATEWAY-STEUERGERAT-1K0-907-530-AB-/250735016441?pt=Autoteile_Zubeh%C3%B6r&hash=item3a60f8b9f9

the Part number is 1K0 907 530 AB, assuming it should be ok?

and is it a case of do a vagcom scan, find out what the coding is, swap the units and tick the same boxes for the new unit?

many thanks

Mine went flat in about 10 hrs, it was fine for about 2 months and it had been left longer than 48 hrs , so i thought i had cracked it , then out of the blue i got up one morning and the car battery was dead. that was on firmware 1300, i downgraded back to 1100 and all's been fine
