I've got one of the stubby aerials off ebay for xmas, just under £8 which looks fine. However when i screw it on it stops a few mm short of the base leaving a gap.
Do i just hacksaw some of the thread off or will this a) damage the thread so that it wont screw back on or b) affect the reception on the radio?

I think somebody else took a hacksaw to the screw.
Other option is to buy a stubby VW antenna.

I just chopped a few mill off with a junior hacksaw and it now fits flush :happy2:

Thanks for that. There were no issues with the screw thread afterwards, ie damage from the hacksaw?
Is the radio reception still okay? Mine has a blue spot forward of the screw threads. Does this have any significance?

If your worried about damaging the thread screw on a nut. Cut the required amount off and then unscrew the nut, it will open out any damaged thread. But to be honest it'll be ok without doing that! and cutting the thread won't alter the reception.
As a rule though the shorter the ariel the worse the reception... mine def changed when I swapped to a stubby.

i have fitted the original sharkfin without radioreception, i just left the whip above the headlinning (?)
same reception as when it was on the roof
