Title: HELP: Hood light won't go off and alarm keeps going off
Post by: VWKD on January 03, 2011, 04:00:27 pm
Basically what the subject says...

I get message that hood is open and a light on the speedo and giving it a good slam not making it go away. As a consequence I'm stuck at a pub with the alarm going off intermittently ... any help on where the bonnet open switch is or how to lock the car without setting the alarm much appreciated

This is a common problem, the switch is part of the latch mechanism for the bonnet.  I believe disconnecting the wire from the microswitch will make it think the bonnet is closed.  Permanent solution (if a squirt of WD40 doesn't work) is to buy a new bonnet latch - ~£30 IIRC.

Note that if the check oil lights comes on while the switch is fubared its likely not to go off after topping the oil off as the system checks if the bonnet has been opened AND the level is higher before resetting itself.

on the bottom of the b-piller on the drivers side theres a button which disables the alarm

^ not strictly true - the button only disables the interior sensors / inclination sensor.  I don't think it disables the door / hatch sensors but I could be wrong.

Thanks everyone for the responses much appreciated.

I went and tried to disconnect the microswitch in the pub car park and couldn't get my fingers anywhere near it  Any tips on how I go about disconnecting it?

Fortunately when I was peeing about with it in the car park a space became available near window where we were sitting so was able to park the car there and leave it unlocked/unalarmed. I have since had it in the garage unlocked/unalarmed.

Could anyone confirm that this issue would cause the alarm to go off ?

Only the alarm kept going off at night a week or so ago and the bonnet light 'Hood Open' message was not being displayed then.  It was going off every couple of hours so quite a long time just long enough to get into deep sleep and be rudely awoken    I tried pressing them buttons on the b-pillar but made no difference so come 4:30am and my 3rd rude awakening I just left the bloomin thing unlocked on the driveway in hope someone might steal it...

Can't believe there isn't a way you can just lock the bloomin car without the alarm being set.

Anyway I guess my main question here for starters and to hope it solves the alarm going off issue is how do I disconnect that micro switch.. I tried WD40ing the latch pinging it open and shut a few time to no avail and attempted to remove the grill but after removing the 2 torx self tappers at the top guessed it wasn't gonna be that straight forward.

Thanks again

Cool I'll have a look for that when I get home.. If you have a pic to hand then great otherwise I'll have a look first to see if I can spot it.

I presume I have to replace the whole latch to sort this properly ?  Is this tough to replace ?

Thanks

The micro switch comes out of the mechanism itself as I've done it.
Grill has to come off the get at the mechanism. I've just left the microswitch out and disconnected it.
Dont really need the display to tell me the bonnet is up!
I have seen these switches on ebay but make sure its the right one before you buy. There is a number on the connector I seem to recall.
Hope this helps

Only had a quick read, I thought you could lock it manually, (double lock with the key at once), this locks the car but doesnt activate the alarm I think!

Sorry, yes!

Just lock it twice in the door with the key, (fairly quickly). The L.E.D should then stay out if I remember.
I'm not by my car so cannot try it, as I too wanted to know how to turn it off while keeping it locked.

Ok Managed to find the cable behind drivers headlamp and disconnect/ cable tie out the way... Hood light warning now gone  :jumpmove:

Hopefully as a result of this the alarm didn't go off last night  :jumpmove:

I can also confirm that the double locking with the key does indeed lock the car with the alarm disarmed  :happy2:

Will get round to fixing the micro switch at some point but happy with this for now

Massive thanks to everyone who chipped in on this thread  :drinking:
