Title: Exhaust Warning Lamp
Post by: bird752 on January 06, 2011, 01:58:25 pm
Tried to read what people have said previously but thought I would start afresh.  Light came on yesterday, steady amber, no warning in display.  Should I be worried?  I rang VW and they said until it goes red, starts flashing or the Exhaust Workshop comes up I neednt worry.  To put the car on daignostics for an hour would cost approx £70.  Worth it to clear the light and find out if anything is wrong?  No performance issues or backfiring etc.  Help appreciated guys.

What car is this for?

If you have a look a the VCDS register there may be someone nearby who will scan the car for you for some beer tokens.

Im near Salisbury and have VCDS if your nearby :happy2:

Mine came on, on two seperate occasions.

1. I took it to an indy who scanned it and cleared it (for free) and said they come on for a variety of reasons, if it comes back return and they will investigate.

2. next time a year later it came back on, I did nothing, it cleared itself after 24 hours.

Never happened again.

had this happen just before Xmas. Light came pm stready Amber. Took it to my indi who found the fault but couldn't do the work. Didn't charge for the scan.

Then light went out... It's on a key cycle and will turn itself out though the fUlt I'd still logged on the computer. Took it to VW who ran a diagnostic (£29) turned out to be a loose air intake hose they reattached and put a clip on to ensure it wouldn't come loose again and only charged for the diagnostic. To be honest I'd have it checked out... Find a cheaper diagnostic if you get no joy on here.

Have you noticed a drop in power, mine hesitated under boost and found it lacked that kick when you put your foot down... Though still fast you could tell something was missing.

Let us know how you get on

Edit - just noticed you don't have enough posts for a PM!  Get three more posts and then PM me :)

Update, just drove home and the light has come on again.  looks like I may have to take it to the garage to have a look as I am not mechanically minded.

Like I said in my email I think you have some form of boost leak which is triggering the CEL.  It could be coming from a number of places (broken PCV being my first guess) and will need some investigation to get to the bottom of it.

Cheers KRL, will keep you informed of course!  Love to know if there is any way of knowing if that is the case.
