Title: What colour is your fin??
Post by: apollo13 on January 07, 2011, 03:25:02 pm
I'v got an OEM sharkfin to fit. I just wondered before I fit it does it need colour coding?

If anyones got a factory fitted sharkfin could they tell me if its colour coded or not.

Thanks for all the replies lads  :happy2:

I might colour code it I think, old school rattle can job!!

@Betty Its easy to fit, just remove the rear roof lining trim piece and you can just get at the nut.

There is no radio reception on the fin though only GPS and/or Telephone depending on what one you get.

The newer fins are combi fin and bee sting (as above).

You dont need to take the whole roof lining down only at the rear of the car above where the fin is going  :happy2:

Obviously yours never had sat nav from the factory?

The earlier Golfs had no beesting as the aerial was in the rear screen.

I realise the twinkle on top of the shark fin in this picture is a reflection - but how much better would the fin look if it really did have an LED light on top :signLOL:

^^^^^did you have to drill your roof out to get your volvo?? one to fit??
I had to drill mine and use a dremel to make the hole square. Drilling through the headliner is not the worst thing to happen. I did a few practice holes in some sheet material if the drill bit snags it tears the metal. So when i drilled my hole the last bit i ran the drill in reverse.

Ed did you fit a VW fin? I thought Darren fitted a Volvo or Bmw fin hence the drilling??

God know where I got Volvo/Bmw from!! It was from an A4!!!

Hi Lee
Yes, I did fit one for the sat nav over 3 years ago, my car is a 2004 and didn't have the roof antenna so no hole. I also didn't want to use one of those cheap gps pill type receivers under the dash. Also makes it look OEM.

Oh of course I'm with you now :happy2:

I get 8/9 out of 10 with the in dash GPS but just want to get rid of the beesting. I'lll connect the fin up properly if I ever get hold of a decent GTI headlining.

At least you still get good radio reception though!! I'll try leaving my beesting in the headlining AKA Jakes way but if the reception is sh*t I'll have to go for a after market screen aerial or something.I'm not bothered about the radio but the missus listens to it.

Although she only listens to FM so I may be ok.

My car's like Eddie's in that it was one of the last before VW started fitting the bee sting aerial so no hole in the roof.

I've been running the "pill" type unit behind the speedo clocks for about 3 years now with no problems, but really do like the look of the OEM shark fin. To be honest I've had one in the garage for about 6 months now, but unlike Eddie and Darren, don't have the balls to drive my roof (I know what a wuss  )

Really need to find someone who's willing to do this for me (Darren are you listening - can we add this to the "to do" list please  :signLOL:)

Lee,

It got up and left years ago  :signLOL:

When I was in my youth (yes I can actually remember that far back), I had a MK1 Escort RS Turbo. At the time, I though it would be a good idea to stick on the bee sting aerial from a MK2 Golf GTI 16V (it was all the rage at the time.)

Measured carefully, made a cross on the drill position with masking tape, and started to drill with a pilot drill. Went though no problem, but also went thorugh the headlining and the foam noise insulation that was stuck to the roof also nearly caught fire and started smouldering. Sorted that out and went the the full size bit. Firstly it slipped and the drill left a lovely mark across the roof. When I finished swearing, and fitted the aerial and stood back to admire my work, I noticed that I hadn't measured properly and the aerial was neatly 1½" across one side of the centreline.

Now do you see why I won't trust myself Lee

The moral of that story was.......

'Measure twice, Drill once'

I think i measured it 10 times, before I got the drill out.
i don't like to laugh at someones expense but you made me laugh Andrew with your story of old. At least you've learnt from it. And I'm sure if you tried to do it again you wouldn't make a balls up again.

Electrics, no problem, trim, no problem, mechanical work, no problem - body work, I'd best leave well alone!
