Hi all,
Having a bit of an issue with my GTI, (again)
Since I had Ap coilovers fitted, when turning I am getting a horrible grinding noise, It only happens when pulling away on pretty much full lock, but when I turn the wheel to straighten up it carries on until the wheel is straight, I don't believe it is the wheel rubbing on the arch as it looks like there is enough clearance. I also occasionally get it if I pull up my dropped curb onto the drive.
Would prefer to find out what it is before having to take it to a garage.
Wondered if it may be the wheels rubbing on the INSIDE of the wheel arch, but they are only 18'' Et48 8J CH reps?

check to see if your arch lining is still where it should be and not dropped down inside

*Dons flame suit* Frankly when you do things like this, problems are to be expected. VW didn't spend millions of pounds on R&D on a car for someone to come along and bang a set of coilovers on and ruin the geometry in the process. (All IMHO, of course!!) And each to their own!! If it floats your boat, then go for it!!
Yes big Al you cant expect a aftermarket suspension to work because VW didn't make it. :grin:

VW didn't spend millions of pounds on R&D on a car for someone to come along and bang a set of coilovers on and ruin the geometry in the process. (All IMHO, of course!!) And each to their own!! If it floats your boat, then go for it!!
since there were and have been many others using AP coilovers and many other brands now and in the past (me included) with zero issues, id say thats not the issue

Al check the brake dust shields see if there is any thing between the disc and shield, also try the seeing if the tyre is rubbing on the arch if you are using 225-40-18 then they will rub if your down quite a bit especially on full lock or turning corners.
Failing that look to see if all the bolts are tight and that the drop links are not catching any thing when turning to full lock, Who ever fitted them did they make sure the top mounts where in the correct position, i.e the 2 arrows pointing from back to front where on the inside of the arch?
I have just taken all the front coilovers off to clean up and I was getting a banging grinding noise, when I stripped them down its was the drop link on the passanger side not tightened up, all sorted now clean and back on.

Yeah you are right. These companies bring out the suspension without ever spending a second researching it first.
Don't think that it is the arch lining, sounds too harsh for it to be that.

Will get the front wheels off tomorrow and see,
Thanks for all the tips guys. Suspension is one of those parts i won't touch myself, so not sure what I will be looking for, May try taking it back to the garage where I had the suspension fitted.
Darren, cheers mate, I am running 225/40/18's, If that is the problem what would be a better size tyre to run?Don'w want to go for stretched though. :sick:

I went for 215-35-18 and this is what they was like

You could try 215-40-18 but any odd sizes you will pay more for.
I'm back on a 225-40-18 but the toyo proxes seem to have a softer sidewall and don't catch at all

wasnt there another thread about this big al? i thought mk5's had steering column issues....mine def grinds at v slow or stop and i turn in....... perhaps dropping it makes the underlying issue show up more?

I had mine running quite low with the AP coilovers, as has GazbutS3. both of us have proper given it some on track as well with no issues whilst running the sandard 225 wide tyres.
You dont need to reduce the tyre width, you might end up with less grip then as well. where abouts are you located. theres defo something else at work here

Hi mate, in Wolverhampton near to Birmingham.
Have taken the car up on the jack today, could not see any tyre rub marks, but that's not to say that isn't the problem. Think the car is dropped about 35mm, but may be more as remember the garage winding them quite a way down

There was an issue on the fabia VRS running Ap's and not running a helper spring i think, it was causing the spring to turn at low speeds which would explain the clunk. If you maybe do a search on briskoda. Havent seen the set up on a mk5 though so couldnt be sure, but always worth a shout.

When I had a noise I got someone to move the car very slowly forward for me and I got down close2the car to see if I could locate the source! In the end some copper grease and a twist of a spring resloved it.
