Title: Shell v Tesco
Post by: rsreid2000 on January 12, 2011, 10:41:12 am
I have had my car since August with only 44 miles on it.
It has had Shell V Power in from the moment I left the dealers.
I was needing petrol yesterday and was only near a Tesco's so I filled up with their Momentum 99.
The difference seems to be amazing. The car seems to pick up a lot quicker and seems all around smoother & quicker.
I don't know if I am imagining this, but I will be trying Tesco's Momentum 99 from now on.

I dont think theres much between the 2 to be honest, i think i read somewhere on this discussion that one is better formulated - probably the Shell fuel - but cant remember, but both should end up giving around the same bang for buck as it were, altho Tesco is usually a few pennies cheaper by comparison round my way.
I tend to use Tesco tho as its a bit cheaper and the car seems fine with it, plus the double clubcard points are always useful too

I don't know for sure but I think the Tesco stuff is supplied by Greenergy and hence is a biofuel mix, which is probably the difference you're feeling.  As for which is better, all newer cars should cope with biofuel mixes so it shouldn't be an issue to run the Tesco stuff.

Personally I've always preferred Shell but I can't say I've noticed a difference with different makes, let alone grades of petrol since getting the GTI, on my previous Polo with 85bhp super made a big difference.

I was told by Kev@Revo when i had my remap done try not to use tesco as it is full of additves to boost the octane rating, and Shell is generally a better quality of petrol,

When I used to live in Dorset, I had the luxury of both Tesco and Shell petrol stations, though the latter was about a mile further out. I honestly felt a difference when I went from one to the other and back again.

Part of it is the fact that you're putting in new petrol into your car - the stuff in your tank will degrade over time. The same holds true for petrol stations - if you use one that is infrequently used by others, the V-power stuff is likely to sit there for longer and hence degrade.

Personally, I felt V-power gave more oomph but T99 gave more mpg.
