hi all,
i was wondering if anybody has had or still has this......
if you pull out from somewhere in 1st gear and floor it.....do you ever get a horrible banging sound coming from the engine bay, as if the car is trying to get grip or something? most cars will just spin and light the wheels up but my gti tends to display this cringe factor noise??
anyone else??
-
Axle tramp. Google it.
-
^^^^^^^ as above... it does make me cringe to some people also call it wheel hop
-
sounds like mine, pretty sure its the bigger miltec hitting the "tunnel", at the cat
what exhaust you got?
-
As above, use less gas at first.
-
Turn your traction control (esp) off and try again :happy2:
-
What tyres are you running?
-
I hate it when my edition does this.... makes me cringe! I believe that one of these.... http://www.awesome-gti.co.uk/product.php?xProd=3075&xSec=158 will help!
I blame the lack of "take off control" that the DSG provides! (and the crap falkens)

I wouldn't rule out a broken engine mount. Stick it in 1st with the bonnet open and bringit to the biting point with the handbrake on. Might need a friend to watch for excessive engine movement.

Mmm, this drives me crazy as well, my mate has a 400bhp Focus RS and when he came in the car with me he freaked out, thought something was loose or falling out the engine bay. It's especially bad on wet or damp roads. I stumped up around £170 for the VWR lower engine mount and had it fitted today at AMD Essex. It didn't remove all of the wheel hop but definitely improved it a lot, and gear changes feel a lot better as well. AMD told me it was definitely the thicker Milltek pipe (I have the turbo back) banging against the 'tunnel' under hard acceleration (whatever that means) :surprised:
I think that as mentioned, switching of the ESP also helps prevent the knocking.
Try the mount, you won't be disappointed. :pomppomp:

thanks for all the feedback guys.... tyres are crap but were on the car when i bought it.. will replace with some good ones very shortly as they are really low now.. the car is running standard exhaust and after a re-map is making 256bhp..
most of you say it is getting its grip back again whilst nailing it.... the tyres dont make this noise so what is making the banging sound?? my mates tdi audi does it and my other mates vrs..... i hate it, lol....

As in the name when people say wheel hop this noise is generally the wheel hopping and as the wheel is spinning so fast when it makes contact back with the road it jolts the whole car and it does is really quickly and the dash and suspension and engine are jolting about and that's the noise.. It can also be the exhaust banging in the tunnel if it's a aftermarket one!

It can also be the exhaust bagging in the tunnel if it's a aftermarket one!
hmm :ashamed: :fighting:

is this a design fault as no other car i have ever owned has done this?? is it doing any damage?

Hi Kieron,
Change your front tyres to something decent like Bridgestone RE050A, Vred sessanta, Pilot 3 etc. Mine was exactly the same when I got it, and I was all ready for changing engine mounts/lower gearbox mount until I changed the tyres to RE050A's. The banging has gone completely,......... and I'm in a mapped ED30. :happy2:
-
Suppose you could say it was a designe issue but iv being in a few cars that do it Clio sports civic type r's so as for damage no not really but It can't be good for certain components so proberly advised to try avoid it!!
-
hi,
how much per tyre did you get them for?

hi,

If you meant me Kieron, .....I had one for free off the dealer (due to a tyre supplied on the car with less than 2mm) and the other £107 from Camslkill.co.uk :happy2:
-
ok, thanks for that... will look into it.. :happy2:
