Title: Was Folding Mirror Question - Now just chat about my new car!!!
Post by: Chumba on January 19, 2011, 08:14:05 pm
Hi Folks!

Picked up the new car on Sunday there, a 2006 3 Door GTI.  It's in the garage just now getting a service etc. but in the meantime I have some questions!

First one:

How far should the folding mirrors fold back?  On the girlfriend's Toyota, her folding mirrors go all the way so that the glass from them faces directly onto the window glass (hope that makes sense?), but on the Golf they only seem to angle back a bit as opposed to folding all the way in.

Does that sound right?!?

Cheers!

Sounds correct, its the same on mine!

Really!??!

Kinda wondering why they bothered if they're not going to make them fold all the way in?  My 1st thought was - oh great, they're f***ked, they're only angling and not folding!!

The folding mirrors are the most pointless, stupid, ridiculous design. Although you do get the puddle lights on the folding mirrors which look ace at night !

Completely agree on why they bothered ? I'm sure due to the angle they are further out than if they are in the right position

phew!

Still going through that "hope I haven't bought a lemon" phase at the moment!

Didn't even know it had folding mirrors until I was showing the girlfriend how to turn the heater function on and they moved!

Seems to have a pretty good spec.  Including flappy paddles and a manual gearbox?!?   :rolleye: :rolleye: :rolleye:

do you mean DSG?
Title: Re: Folding Mirror Question
Post by: Chumba on January 19, 2011, 08:52:14 pm
Nope.

It's a manual gearbox with a MF steering wheel and the DSG paddles too!  Came from the factory like that apparently (it was a VW demonstrator for the first 500 miles of its life).  The only thing they do is light up and provide something for me to play with when I'm pretending to be an F1 driver.  Best of both worlds, proper gearbox with flappy paddles!   Most amusing !  :driver:

Full spec...

3 Door Black Manual GTI - 2006
25k miles
Leather
Heated Seats
Xenons with skooshers
Parking Sensors
Auto Lights
Auto Wipers
Electric folding mirrors & Puddle Lights
Highline Computer
Multi Function Steering Wheel (and flappy paddles!)
VW Ipod Connector
Arm Rest
18" Monzas
In Dash 6 CD Changer

Think that's about it?  Not sure if some of that is standard spec?

Cheers!

Not as far as I am aware only button operated , but I stand to be corrected. And if it is possible I would be the first one to do it as I always forget to fold in my mirrors, that don't really fold !

Don’t know how many of you garage your cars, but when it comes to getting the wing mirrors through the stupidly narrow entrances that we British use for the size of a garage (and then struggle to open the car door in the garage), I can say that folding mirrors do make a difference. It may be only about 60-70mm narrower if that but it does make it easier to drive through the opening.

Alot of people seem to think the folding mirrors are pointless but for me personally they fold in enough to make parking into my garage alot easier!

If you have the added option it is on the mirror adjust knob, you have adjustment for left and right mirrors, heated setting then a further setting for folding ther mirrors in.

Got the car back from the service.  Turns out they weren't folding in as much as they should be so they're fixed now and fold in a decent amount!!  :pomppomp:

If someone has moved them manually, they get 'upset' apparently.  So the garage manually moved them in and out a few times which appears to reset them and now they work properly! yay!

Headlight skoosher question now...

Manual says they come on every 5th time you use the window skooshers, but I'm not convince mine have ever come on yet.  Any tips for using them, i.e. is there a minimum time you should hold the skoosher lever back for before they kick in etc??

Cheers!!

Just stand outside your car with the drivers window down and pull the stalk 5 times or whatever goes and you will see,you don't have to pull hard just little pulls are fine!!!

Just triple checked... headlight skoooshers definitely not doing anything!

Didn't think to get the garage to check them either... typical!!!

Guess I'll check the fuses when it's daylight and hope that's all it is.  Can someone point me in the right direction (i.e. where are the fuses on the car I've just bought and which one may have blown etc!)   :sad1:

Good point!

It has the bits on the bumper and has the winter pack fitted.... So they should be there!

LOL, worth a proper look just to make sure, the winter could have frozen them up and then damaged them when used.

Where are you based, perhaps your car could do with a VCDS session

Based on the edge of Glasgow, near Blantyre.

What's a VCDS session?

*update*

Found the fuse for the skooshers and it's blown.  Hopefully replacing that will sort it.  A wee search reveals they can blow if you try to use them when they're frozen!

Its a common problem with the headlight washers, because they work from the pressure of the water if they freeze then the fuse blows to save the washer pump getting damaged.
