Hi Guys
Recently got my ED30 and want to do an oil change at the weekend on it.
I like to do things properly, therefore would prefer to use the proper tool (T40057) to drain the oil filter housing prior to removing the filter (as per the official service guide)
One of these:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.mkv-gti.net%2Fwiki%2Fimages%2Fa%2Fa9%2FVw_matra_t40057x.jpg&hash=2e31b1c7108635c79a1a9083b4059208d96b87fe)
Does anyone have one that I could possibly borrow for a day?
Im located in Poole, down in Dorset
Cheers

In all honesty you wont need it. I have one in my toolbox, used it once and realised it was pointless and has no benefit whatsoever.
-
Fancy selling it?
I'm not up for breaking the valve as I've read it's easily damaged :(
-
No need to touch the valve, just remove the cap and use the right size filter housing socket (36mm i think) to take the housing off.
-
So don't bother draining the housing prior to removal? This is the first car I've worked on with cartridge filters!
-
No need to, once you remove the housing you can just tip any oil thats inside it out into your oil bucket
-
Many thanks PDT

Im about to order one but am wondering why, as Dave suggested you cant drain from the sump plug 1st and then tip out any left in filter housing when you remove it?
Cleaner method as no / less risk of making mess, is that it?
-
I do the same as Dave when i have done them at work :happy2:

Drain from sump plug 1st & carefully remove filter housing? :happy2:

This could be helpful when changing your oil.

Good find that, think what I need is a pig that can be plugged so I can transport it to work to dispose of the oil
-
I've gotta change my filter and housing next weekend! Are we saying that there is a separate plug for draining the oil prior to removal of the filter housing and filter?

The plastic filter housing has a drain valve, then there is the drain plug in the sump :happy2:

I use castrol edge. 5-30 there are a few threads on peoples preferences.
So long as it has the VW standard on it :happy2:
-
5W30 Longlife III Oil :happy2: Regardless of your service plan.

^^^^^ VW 504 00 / 507 00

If you are out of warranty then there are far better oils out there than the vw grade stuff. The engines don't have to run on it.
-
VW have just given me Quantum Platinum 5w 40.... i presume thats the OEM oil for our cars.

Does it say it's VW 504 spec?

VW 502 00 / 505 00 / 505 01
They are diesel oil specs iirc.

Thats what i was given by VW against my car registration number. Shall I go and swap it?

The quantum stuff is a very 'budget' oil tbh. On par with comma, carlube etc.
I will only use Millers I'm my car and its what we use in all customers cars inc the lambos. It costs us twice as much as the quantum stuff too.
I would get on opie oils site and order the Millers xf 5w30 longlife if you want longlife oil, or get the cfs 5w40 competition stuff (what I use in mine).
-
Will it be ok to use for a few thousand miles? My car is on 36k and needs servicing at 39k.

-
As its just fully synthetic 5w 40 then it will be fine for a few thousand k's.
Tbh most oil in the tfsi's smell a little of fuel. Nothing to worry about. If it really stinks and the oil level is rising then the pump seals are shot.
-
Ok thanks for your advice Alex. If you could drop me a PM with a quote for a 39K service please that would be great, (probably be start of december)
If the seals have gone, is it a new pump or are the seals available seperatly? I don't think the oil level is rising, i had to put about 1/5th L in the other day.
Thanks again.

I will try and get some prices tomorrow for you.
If the pump seals are shot then its a new pump. :(
-
Booo hiss... :sad1:
If you could get a price for one of those too that would be superb (just so it doesn't come as a complete blow in the face)
