Title: Mark's Steel Grey Edition 30 *Dyno Results on Page 3!*
Post by: marka87uk on January 23, 2011, 09:28:45 pm
Hi!

I've just recently treated myself to an Ed30 after owning an Anniversary Mk4 so decided to sign up here! I'm also a member of UK-MkIvs.

It's a 2007 DSG with one previous owner (VW themselves), and it's got quite a number of extras including the Convenience pack, multifunction steering wheel, front armrest, Highline computer, rear tinted windows, rear air vents, metallic paint, Parrot handsfree kit, and the best bit - the RNS-510 touch-screen DVD navigation/entertainment system! :happy2:

I only have pics from the advert at the moment I'll hopefully take some more soon!

Looking great mate
just wondering in that first pic it looks like a normal ariel..?

Does the RNS-510 not need the shark fin antenna for GPS or can you purchase something else instead??

Cheers

Cheers guys!

It has a GPS antenna on the dash (you can see it on the left hand side of the 4th pic).

One thing I am confused about is why it does not have an iPod or CD changer interface. Does this hint that the RNS-510 was installed afterwards?

Not at all, the ipod and cd changer are optional extras, I bought an MDI cable that just plugs into the back of the RNS and gives full ipod control and sits in the glovebox.

One question, on the shot from the passenger side door, what is the black circle on the centre console by the footwell?

Ah, for some reason I thought they came with one of the options as standard. I'm not too fussed about iPod connectivity now - I had my iPod connected to a Pioneer headunit in my Anniversary but due to the fact I had so much music on it I ended up creating playlists of my favourite albums anyway. I've just stuck what I listen to most on a SD card now and it works great! :happy2:

I hadn't noticed that until you said! It's some kind of suction cup mount - I'm guessing it was used for a phone mount or something similar by a previous owner.

If you get an edition 30 badge (the one thats meant for the boot) from either ebay or the dealers, it sticks straight on with the adhesive strip on the back

I haven't got much to update at the moment but I recently upgraded the firmware of my RNS510 to the modified 2760 version and it all went smoothly thanks to the guide on here! :happy2:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fhh60%2Fmarka87uk%2FIMAG0096.jpg&hash=932f297831e4824b1e3cb5b378f6e97f8e01640d)

The modified version works perfectly without any battery drain on my (I assume) K version CAN-BUS, and enables other features too such as the test menu.

I just need to obtain the v7 maps now for full 7-digit postcode search (preferably not at the cost VW charge for them!).

Time for a proper update...

I bought a US spec grill courtesy of damo666 on here, and he was even kind enough to throw in the black badge too! :happy2:

It left me thinking of what to do about the front number plate and so I decided the best method would be to use magnets as others have done.

Here's the parts ready to be assembled:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fhh60%2Fmarka87uk%2FDSCF9445.jpg&hash=296afaf0f6021c9343ac6a15853aebe41186c5f3)

I used neodymium N42 magnets with a pull of 6.4kg. Do not do end up getting them all stuck together like I did as they are a PITA to get apart again!

Firstly I glued on the magnets to the number plate, spacing them about 11cm apart:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fhh60%2Fmarka87uk%2FDSCF9469.jpg&hash=adce4c3bde021f0d623b8d9e1611e5b0a7f39056)

Then I covered them with weatherproof cloth tape which helps in keeping them secure too:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fhh60%2Fmarka87uk%2FDSCF9483.jpg&hash=c83e19bb9007d7fe99b2f3199bbc5e43b2d2351c)

Next I held up the plate to the grill where I wanted it to go and placed the magnets on the back:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fhh60%2Fmarka87uk%2FDSCF9490.jpg&hash=639592396f957ea4c92e5183e4854ba20dde0795)

I then removed them one at a time to glue into place and finally covered them again with weatherproof tape:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fhh60%2Fmarka87uk%2FDSCF9503.jpg&hash=e5d8d24d5ba32d0c322c4970eb8c0a5a22f96b0f)

And here's the finished shots!  :pomppomp:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fhh60%2Fmarka87uk%2FDSCF9564.jpg&hash=80b2a2949df25f728e895240e912513ce9b3c32a)

Here's a couple of the plate attached (excuse the dirtyness of the car!) - I'll take a picture from above tomorrow.

They are 5mm magnets so the plate sticks out slightly but not much; less than it would with the standard holder on anyway!

Did you curve the plate or is it flat and hence sticks out at the edges? Sorry, on Iphone so pics don't come out great. I think topcat had to curve his number plate.

Post by: marka87uk on April 03, 2011, 09:20:31 am
It's a standard plastic plate so bends correctly as I've spaced out the 5 magnets in a line.

Top Cat was using a metal plate, and that's why I'm assuming he had to bend it. :happy2:

Cheers guys!  :happy2:

As I've had a couple of responses asking where I got the supplies...

The magnets were from eBay shop NeoMagnetMan (http://stores.ebay.co.uk/NeoMagnetMan). They are the neodymium N42 20mm x 5mm discs which are £7.29 delivered. Looking at the specs I assume they are the same ones as sold on e-magnetsuk.com (item 336).

I used Araldite epoxy resin to stick them to the plates and to the rear of the grill. Again, I picked up some from eBay for £4.49 delivered but I would've thought you can find it in most DIY stores.

The new front plate was from eBay seller djhplates and was just under £6 delivered.

Hope this helps!  :happy2:

they are  the magents i used. you can change time zones with them.  :signLOL: To be honest you may find they are to strong, after a while they like to leave the glue no matter which one you use i tried plenty. Saying that i use a alu plate so you might be ok.

I had great fun sticking the magnets to objects then moving them along my arm, even convinced myself i was a Magician.  :star:

What's the difference with the US grille, is it just the same without holes for the number plate holder? Can they be bought online anywhere?

Yeah, because sticky pads or 2 screws will instantly deter them
If they want your number plates then they will take them regardless of how you attach them.

It would actually take them longer to take it than yours. If they decide they want your plates, they are going to turn up armed with a posi drive, once they start to try and un screw it they will be scratching there pikey heads.  :signLOL:

Some new parts...

Neuspeed P-Flo intake (I'm not entirely happy it doesn't have a heat shield over the filter... something I need to have a look at I think!):

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fhh60%2Fmarka87uk%2FDSCF9602.jpg&hash=26231dbceaf06734e466f19de4ed53211c0413fe)

OEM Revision D Diverter Valve:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fhh60%2Fmarka87uk%2FDSCF9611.jpg&hash=ddc5912688a2183a3164af1d62e86737b7518de6)

Fitted:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fhh60%2Fmarka87uk%2FDSCF9974.jpg&hash=87779ef59be9d9e1ed5985913a8c2698cd52b531)

And then it was time for a Revo map where she made 310 bhp and 290 lb/ft of torque!

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fhh60%2Fmarka87uk%2FRemapGraph.jpg&hash=8745c5e42abefeb63f5566cb2155a64a301f0ae7)

The torque seems slightly lower than the figures Revo quote but it's a healthy increase and she certainly pulls like a train! Let me know if you spot anything odd though please! :happy2:

I personally wouldnt want more then 300 lb ft personally, Your clutch would eventually spit bits out if your getting higher torque. Those figures make for a mighty fast car :happy2:

Cheers! It's a DSG (even though notes say it is a manual above!) but I guess it is indeed how it drives and I shouldn't rely on figures!  :happy2:

AMD told me it'll take a couple of days for the ECU to adapt fully but it's certainly fast and smooth as it is!

No it's stage 1 - the only addition is the intake.

I know the feeling! I'm sure this will do me for a while anyway!  :happy2:

A 5th gear pull?

Looks like it... looking at other people's graphs from AMD they say 5th gear too so maybe the text is incorrect or maybe they do indeed use 5th gear (or maybe it's because it's DSG) - I didn't ask to be honest. Should it make much difference than using 3rd or 4th?

Great looking eddie you've got there, bet she pulls well now with the remap  :driver: Are the magnets still holding onto the numberplate? Just wondering as I've used the same magnets and Araldite (longer setting version though) on a number plate and they've come off  :sad1:    Anymore plans for the car?

Thanks! :happy2:

Not sure on 0-60 but I think it would be around 5.0-5.5s on a dry road. I'll have to time it while we still have some good weather! :driver:

My magnets are still stuck on - they're starting to show slightly through the number plate through but it's not a major problem. I rarely remove the number plate so that's probably helped!

No plans as yet but I would like to go Stage 2+ some day!

If you kept the pesky's rims on during winter there are some w300 icebear winter tyres on camskill for £102 per tyre, Beddie ran them last winter and was very happy with them

Went to VW today to have a minor service / brake fluid change / cambelt and waterpump change... my wallet is now almost £600 lighter! :sad1:

I mentioned some problems I was having with the DSG and after taking a look at it they decided that it's the mechatronics unit which needs replacing (I was dreading that would be the case!).

Luckily, even though the car is coming up to 4 years old, as I have FVWSH they have agreed to pay 100% of the parts and 50% of the labour! Result! :happy2:
