Title: Security code for old headunit
Post by: Gtiain on January 25, 2011, 01:50:46 pm
Since installing the rns510 I've had the old unit lying about. Its a 2006 car and was under the impression that if I sold it on they would need a security code to install it. So I rand up the dealers and said can I have the security code and they said I don't need one! Is this true or are they fibbing me off? It's just a normal unit not a sat nav one.

Someone else will know for sure but I have read before that the headunit will not need a code when installed in your car but if moved to another car it will need a code.  I had a code card for my old RCD-500, it was in the wallet with the owners manual and service manual.

Thanks. Yeah that's where I thought it would be but nothing. How do I get my code then? Will I have to tell them the serial number or something? Cheers.

I think the car either the can gateway or something else remembers the code so that disconnecting the battery doesnt require the code to be re-entered, but fitting the stereo into a different car will require the code which I believe the dealears provide with proof of ownership of the car and stereo so you might have to pop along with both.

Thanks. I'm picking a few things up from the dealers this weekend so I'll mention it then! Thanks.  :happy2:

When I took out my RCD300 to sell the VW garage told me to take the car into the garage andbring the logbook and they would find the code for it.

The headunit code is actually stored in the instrument cluster, the only way you can get the code for you old unit is either going to the dealer or contacting one of these guys off of eBay.
