Just a quick one - my car's now done 23000 miles and the brakes don't seem too great.
I reckoned I prob needed new discs and pads. A few folk I've spoke to said to that I prob need just pads as this is quite soon for new discs.
How much miles the rest of you generally got out of standard discs?
Cheers in advance

Anyone?

At 23000 miles the discs should be in fairly good order to be honest, but check to see if they are excessively lipped around the edges. The pads should also have a fair amount of material left on them unless its been driven hard.
The 312mm brakes are not the best setup to be honest with you... dont expect miracles from them

Its not a precise science as it depends on the sort of driving the car has done and the drivers style, but after 23,000 discs and pads should still be good, as Rich says check for lipping on the disk, run your finger from the clear metal area outwards off the edge if its heavily pronounced then they might be warn but doubtful with the mileage. Pads you should be able to see the thickness the car also has wear indicators so unless your seeing odd wear patterns you should be fine.
Only other thing to consider if the brakes feel crap is when was the last brake fluid change carried out should be every two years as water seeps into the system, also if the cars an Auto you can get funny things happening to the pads as they drag on the disk more such as glazed/hardened layer so breaking force will be reduced.

Cheers lads. I'm just comparing them to my nephews GTi and my brother in laws A3 s-line 2.0t both standard brake set-ups both much more positive pedal feel.
Mine is a DSG.
I'll have a good look at the discs later.

23K on one set of discs.... thats pretty good going!, obviously staying well clear of track, ring and ds2500's then
-
I'm on almost 55k on the original disc's - think its on the second set of pads though.
-
I've done about 24k now and my pads were at 90% when checked by VW at 20k. Original discs and pads.

I have seen your car up close after a couple of laps of Oulton and i can see why you think 23k is good going.

Mine sounded like they were grinding, MOT and 40k service due. I bought brembo disks all round , front and rear and pagid pads and came to less than £200. only changed the fronts so far and feels much better thans it was. VW charging £280 just to change the front disks/pads :stupid: only took me an hour taking my time!
