I've bought some Golf .:R Mk6 Calipers and want to paint them red but leave the clip black. So i need to remove it but can't figure out how? Don't want to damage them as I want to put them back on after i've painted them.
Any help much appreciated

Get a screwdriver in like this..... and pull one of the arms!

Carefully does it as these things will take your eye out!

:happy2:well done that man.

Ok, so i've done 1 caliper. Please excuse me for being a bit stupid... but now the pad behind the clip won't stay in the caliper and consistantly falls out, is this right?!!!
-
Not really... the pad should still hold in the caliper with the clips on the actual pad!
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm6.static.flickr.com%2F5282%2F5244494170_04047592df_z.jpg&hash=056d160fe869d2ac1185951087cf887d012e4c19)
The pads are held into the caliper
-
OK, well these are from a MK6 .:R, there doesnt seem to be anything holding the pad in place other than the caliper itself, which when the clip is on is pushed down slightly to ensure the pads stay in, obviously removing the clip results in the caliper raising up slightly and the pad falling out!
Will try and take some photos but its a bit difficult to explain!
-
Also when the pads are fitted the ends of them disappear into the caliper and aren't visible like in your second picture so I think they're a different design to the ones shown.
-
Pass... get some pics up! :signLOL:

in the first pic if you can see (sorry about poor quality), theres a kind of hooked shape, that hooks the pad into place, this is what needs to be pushed down by the caliper clip to hold the pad in place?
-
Strange... i presumed that the Golf R calipers would use the same ones as the mk5 r32!
PASS.... but i dont think you have a problem, just make sure the clip is in place!
-
Yer they don't look the same as the ones in your photo at all!!! but anyway i think i'm gonna give Awesome GTI a ring tomorrow and see what they say about it! Thanks for your help
-
Ohh hang on...!
Yes the hook on the pads end does fit against the carrier not the caliper.

And the clips fit on like so...

Whats the silver thing in the middle of the 1st pic, mine doesnt have that? :ashamed:
-
Thats the clips that are on the back of the pad... they hold the pad into the caliper! Yours don't seem to have this, and i'm struggling to figure out why.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm2.static.flickr.com%2F1024%2F5183855323_7ba1b27681_z.jpg&hash=04a647783ab31ae0649d836e6b6f6f67e6913540)
All four pads have clips on the back of them... 2 with larger clips for the single piston and 2 with smaller clips for the "outside" of the caliper.
-
Ok... but I take it these clips can bought easily and fairly cheaply if need be??!
-
Do you mean the clip on the back of the pad? They are part of the brake pad itself.
Having never seen the Golf R brake kit im just presuming that the pads as the same as the R32.... are you 100% sure those are the correct pads?
-
Yer 100%, I might try and take the other caliper clip off and see if theres that clip behind the other one... if not I guess i'll have to buy new pads?
