I have just picked up a 23k miles edition 30 from a golf dealer. The car is in okay condition, I was told mint before I travelled 120 miles to pick up. Its not bad but looks more like what I would expect for 40-50k miles having spent time inspecting. I am not overly happy to be honest, but putting this aside the engine has a 'clatter' when it comes into life.
This is not just on cold start up but the first birst as the engine picks up it sounds like a bag of spanners (ala diesel) for a fraction of a second (maybe half a second). Is this normal, I have only had highish performance petrol engines cars before, E90 M3, E46 M3, E30 M3, Porsche 911 3.2, Porsche 964 RS, E39 M5, Golf Gti 16v MkII, Corrado 16v, Gold VR6 and a few others, none have done this.
It sounds similar to soft tappets but goes away instantly when the engine has fired, soft tappets take much longer to correct as the engine awakens from cold. This noise is there cold or hot in any case. Any comments ?
Tks

They all sound like diesel tractors on start up
I wouldn't worry.

.... x 2 I wish I had £1 for every time I've read this question.
Something to do with FSI engine injectors IIRC but it's totally normal on all the FSI petrol engines. It's a disappointing sound but get an aftermarket exhaust such as Milltek/Blueflame/APR and you'll soon accept it.
