Noticed a big trend away from petrols especially on the motorways these days.
After selling my Edition 30 I'm in the process of selling a E90 330D....can't seem to get any interest!
Still got a nice track car and the missus has a nice A4 TDI avant which sees 45-50mpg on a run.
I must admit for me it would be pretty painful running my Edition 30 unless I was doing very low miles at 1.40 per litre of SUL at my local petrol stn. Can't justify that for the foreseeable what with mortgage and hols booked.
I'm still amazed at Evo mag talking at warm hatches costing 20k+....who are these people buying these cars?
I thought the recession according to the news was hitting middle England? Lack of loans/credit..I wonder whether it's propaganda. Most new cars are being sold abroad.
I wonder whether the tuners are suffering or is everyone doing well?
-
Well every car I have valued on Glass's for the last week or so has increased in value over last months valuation!

Really??
I thought my E90 being diesel would sell really easily as it is very well priced with a great spec.
I am told cars around the £10k mark are very difficult to shift as middle England (normal family people) are not taking out loans
These people 2-3 years ago were buying these types of cars but things seem to have changed radically.
I have mine on Autotrader for over 8 weeks with loads of scam/spam emails probably from off shore by the English being written.
-
Really........ An Astra 1.8 petrol auto i valued had gone up £350 on last months valuation! :surprised:
-
I'm hoping more people will turn to diesel power because
of the recession then hopefully diesel will increase in price
because of demand leaving petrol to (fingers crossed) come
back down to an acceptable level 0.48 p/l :happy2:
zzzzzzzzzZzzzzz Hey guys I just woke up
(you can but dream) :P
-
The problem imo your facing is its a large deisel car with a large deisel engine.
Golf size deisels are selling well. But small cars with small petrol engines are too because of the price difference its often not worth moving to deisel with such cars.
-
Its not that people are not borrowing, its that they cant! I have a pretty simple proposal for my bank, i want to settle my VW finance on my car and take a personal loan to do so. This would enable me to sell my car if i wanted to and get the money back out of it to put into another car. Or split the personal loan across 2 cars, ie Edition 30 (fingers crossed)£16kish, i would then borrow a smaller amount than i borrowed for the GTI and buy a £10k van and a £6k car. Or vice versa!
Im literally laughed out the place!
The price of fuel is a slight problem, but you need petrol at the end of the day! Maybe its a sign of ageing, thinking of having a nice car for weekends and a diesel/van for business/commute!

That will unfortunately never happen read an article about this a year or so back we have apparently had a surplus of petrol compared to diesel in the country for awhile but countries like America find it cheaper to import our surplus than build new refineries and crack there own petrol. :fighting: (Istand to be corrected if this has now changed as I know we have some people who work for the oil companies/refineries on here)
-
Well I've just sold my 21k VW Rocco, settled off my Finance and just couldn't face another round of anal probing to get more credit, luckily I've got a good credit score so they approve me with a crap rate at which I either vote with my feet or negotitate with the bank and get it down.
The Rocco finance was paid off and I bought a 70k Mondeo Ghia X Auto Estate TDCi with what was left over, had it migliored and I must admit because:
I can leave it anywhere
Its not on 35 section tyres and expensive alloys
Im not on a limited mileage contract
Its a comfy car
Im enjoying it more than the rocco right now.....
Plus I get to keep my powder dry for/if the ED35 arrives
-
.
Whatever the price of petrol becomes, you won't see me owning a diseasal, nor a hybrid.
-
Im enjoying it more than the rocco right now.....
....Really? - That doesn't say much for the Rocco :surprised:

I don't think thats what he meens. I know exactly what he meens though as i often run old bangers, currently over the winter its a daihatsu. The mundaino is a car he can leave anywere and not worry about it. Its a car he does not have to dodge every pebble, pothole, kerb with or worry about speed bumps, other motorists quality driving and parking with. The list goes on and on etc, etc.
-
its not hitting everyone... brand new gt2 rs drove past me this morning as I walked to clapham junction station - frosted grey colour with exposed carbon fibre bonnet
chap looked like he was enjoying driving it despite the crators in the road he was weaving around :happy2:

....Exactly. Recession never does hit everyone. Mortgage rates etc etc are constantly fluctuating anyway and never worth losing any sleep over. You won't suddenly see a traffic jam of diseasals on London's Park Lane. Someone my age in the UK will have experienced several economic recessions.

....It's a list you very quickly adapt and get used to and becomes normal habit. In my opinion, absolutely worth it if you enjoy your driving as I do. So what if I can't use most multi-storey carparks, I always find somewhere to park:

I'm in my mid 40's now...doh! but it's a time in most people's lives if you have a big mortgage kids etc that things are tight. I work for the goverment and although I get paid well above the national average owning a new car or nearly new 25-30k is a retirement aspiration right now.
It seems that if you are living at home with parents as getting on the property ladder is nigh on impossible right now are factors that many people by 20k+ cars.
I used to work in the south east where people are either paid a load more or their are many highly paid private sector jobs which enable Porsche and high end BMW ownership but for the majority of people I know and meet the recession is really biting. My local VAG dealership echoes the same issues of tightening of credit for young people unlike 5 years ago.
People are far more wary about borrowing in any case.
-
I wonder how many people in the private sector (excluding directors/managerial positions) earn over £45-£50K these days?
The local hourly rate in one of the main employers in my area of Somerset is £7.42 per hour. If your earning over £10 per hour your considered as doing well. Certainly it is poorly paid but people are greatful to be in a job and manage to pay their mortgages on their average 3 bed semi's. Most drive older cars (mostly diesel!) and there seems to be few expensive new cars with many as previously mentioned that sell their financed cars to pay off debt....a big change from a few yeras ago.
-
Plenty of people in private sector IT still earning that kind of money, even outside the South East.
Recession hasn't hit me or the missus (she's a Medic, nothing changes there), in fact I think we've done better out of it*. Mortgage came down, anything we wanted to buy suddenly became cheaper in the never ending desperation sales, we got £20k's worth of building work/new kitchen at 15%VAT done... little things, but they count. - but then our only outgoings are relatively small, the house only has a 50% mortgage and we've got no kids. If you've got disposable income at the minute, you can command a lot of power.
I also broke my own rule of never borrowing to own a car too recently, I always save and own outright. Such was the desperation of dealers to sell, even in these crap times I was able to get more of a return investing the savings for the car than I'm spending on interest buying it... so why use my own money?
The 330d problem? It's a relatively expensive BMW with (wrongly) perceived high running costs. They're company car fodder, not many people are buying them privately for the family as you say - they look at a 320d or older car and see it ticking 9/10 boxes and the price/running costs swing it. I bet it'd have been sold in a week if it'd been a 320d??
Hot hatches and other things associated with younger people are pretty strong, as I think they're resigning themselves to the fact they can't own a house so spunk the savings instead and stay at home??
Lastly, it's post Xmas and middle England is still feeling the pinch and wary of spending... give it a few months, clear the cards and the prospect of summer will loosen people up.
*Repeatedly touching anything wood.
-
i don't think its so much about salaries but more about the fact that credit is not so easy to come by these days, hence people are no longer able to surive on debt like many have done for years in the past.
the government is having to cut its coat according to its cloth after a decade of frivolous spending and now its time for those who have done the same to follow suit
-
True, people have lived by borrowing for so long, they've forgotten how to deal with real life and have panicked. There's a lot to be said for people talking themselves into a bad situation.

This is definitely true
-
Having said that the best way back into recession is for everybody to curl up into hedgehog mode and not buy anything - something which I'm conscious Im actually doing.
Im on a base +.75 tracker and they wont release any more funds on that deal so to get another few grand to finish the house off would triple my monthly payments. So everything is done out of salary slowly with visits to currys/comet/pc world/the apple shop rapidly becoming a thing of the past.
I'm almost willing my old 1st generation 32" flatscreen to blow up so I can go and get another one......
-
And @ Robin
The Rocco was a great car, probably one of the nicest cars Ive owned (taking various company cars out of the equation) but you'd have to be seriously rich to not worry in any regard about a nice car be it a 20k car or a 100k GT3RS.
Its nice to be in something non descript and low profile that isn't costing the earth, even if I'd only driven the rocco once a month then it would have been worth the monthly payment, I was at the other end of the scale trapesing up and down the M55 to work and not getting the best from it.
My job takes me away for protracted periods - would you leave your car (as is) on an airport car park??
-
There's nothing more liberating than having a crap car you don't care about.
Oh, and I'm still rocking a CRT in the lounge!... I can't justify replacing it for the sake of it.

I hear what you're saying. I recall more 318D's and C220D's than I do Focus and Astra petrols from my daily commute.
A naturally aspirated petrol is becoming a rarer sight, there's no doubt about it. Luckily there's still some popular choices in the petrol turbo ranges with the engines becoming greener and more economical.
What's the spec of the 330D out if interest? I'll probably be looking for one in about 18 months time so it'd be a good to get an idea what spec and prices are like now

Pm me the 330D link :happy2: , thinking about jumping from the ED30 too just now.

They are great cars....46+mpg!!
I was sad to see my Edition 30 go but at the time it was a priority.
I'm lucky to have my old 3 door big bumper MK2 16V Golf which is properly quick around Combe....the car has been extensively featured in VW Driver and Tim Stiles book.....a developement from their old VW cup days....a proper 200+bhp 16V carefully put together and still running a fettled Kjet system. I owned the car back in 1998 and built it to 2 litre with a Quaiffe etc etc....it's proper old school but still has that OE look...a real sleeper!
I ran out of cash and drive to spend/borrow more on the Edition 30. It needed a diff, clutch, intake, proper big brakes, big intercooler and track rubber in other words another £6k!! The bottom line is that it's a lot of cash to rag around the track unlike the MK2!
Here's a link to some pics/spec:

The Audi diesel is a real boon as an everday car....comfy,frugal and a touch of luxury. Sensible motoring for the family man!
-
Well every car I have valued on Glass's for the last week or so has increased in value over last months valuation!
are you a motor engineer or work for Glass'? handy person to know if need an idea on a guide price..
a lot of people at my work are struggling, one girl is getting rid of her corsa sri for a focus tdi and one girl had to get rid of her audi a4 1.8t cab for a 1.2 corsa :sad1:

Sold my ED30 for a Bluemotion!!
Not nearly as much fun, but Im happier overall.
Was getting too protective over the ED30.
Watched where I parked etc.
It was like I was always worried when I parked the car somewhere and left it!!
Before every drive it got to a stage where I would look up parking ares etc first and see what they were like, then check how much fuel I would use!
With the Bluemotion I get around 700-800 miles to a tank.
Dont care where I park.
Dont care where I drive.
Road tax at £35 is nothing.
Cheaper insurance.
Im saving in all directions, so more to pump into my mortgage instead.
Once I get a bigger house, I'll buy a nice weekend car, and keep the Bluemotion for the work commute etc.

Very sensible IMO.
Owning a hot hatch is becoming the preserve of the wealthy. Many young people on the property ladder cannot afford it these days. As said previously, ownership of S3's, Golf R's etc and most £15-20k cars falls into minority groups with either no mortgage or living at home with parents or on big incomes. I look around where I live and people struggling with their mortgage kids etc they have other priorities hence the diesel parked on the drives usually Ford's Pugs, Vauxhall's and the odd Audi/BMW normally 6-10yrs old. You definately can see a tightening of belts what with the fuel and insurance costs escualating. My work colleagues most of which are on 40k+ are all in mundane cars these days and most only talk of a nice car on retirement. Most won't invest money in cars as they can't. It is the preserve of the few owning nice cars it seems.
-
Of late I've been considering jumping ship as well. Whilst I can still afford to run the GTI without having to sacrifice anything else and can't fault the car at all 99% of the journeys I do just don't lend themselves to using the GTI to anywhere near its full potential. My priorities have changed a bit since I've got the car and when I would happily pay the 'tax' that comes with running a hot hatch I now grudge it as money thats basically being spent for no return (happiness).
I'm also getting fed up having to care for it and worry about its wellbeing all the time. And look on somewhat enviously at my fiends who treat their cars as thing or just another white good. The GTI deserves better than that but I'm not sure I can give it anymore.
I think I've fallen out of love a little bit  not just with the GTI but with driving as a passion. Fuel costs, potholes and getting a bit older I guess (silence Robin :signLOL:)

The missis has already chosen her new weapon of choice when she changes car. I was pushing her in the direction of the Polo GTI/Fabia VRS/Bocanegra, but she is adamant that she wants...................
A Prius :surprised: :ashamed:
138bhp, zero tax and probably zero thrills
Anyone had experience of them?

the prius is less efficient than a VW blumotion of skoda greenline model by a quite a large margin. the new Fabia TDI greenline and Polo Bluemotion are good for 94mpg on the motorway, 68.9mpg urban and 84mpg and they are exempt road tax.
the prius makes about 50-60mpg at best.

Pleeeease talk her out of getting a Pious, John!
They are socially irresponsible and their eco credential claims are false. On Dust-to-Dust consider the batteries.. Need I say more?

I'm lucky in that I no longer have a mortgage and no wife to maintain but just my 19yo daughter - I don't understand why so many people say that bringing up children is expensive, it really doesn't need to be and hasn't been, though I did put money away to cover her uni.
Obviously it would be nice if V-Power was cheaper, also road tax etc but I am absolutely still in love with my GTI after nearly 6 years and have not lost any of my passion for driving. For a joke, my VW dealer once lent me a Toyota Yaris for the day and I nearly lost the will to live, let alone a will to drive! It's because my GTI is what she is that I enjoy driving so much and consider her worth the cost. However, I do understand you younger folk in having other priorities such as wives and family and houses etc - Been there and done that, got the T-shirt, and have now returned to my childhood.

I forgot to add that she will ONLY drive an auto.
So the greenline and bluemotion are out

The prius is worse for the earth, due to the way the batteries are manufacturered. If she is basing the buy on being eco friendly she would be better off getting a dodge viper 7.0 v10.

If you price your car right then there's folks out there willing and able to pay for it, some people and i class myself in there had a percieved notion of how much their cars worth, i thought more but quickly realised it wasn't. folks asking 15-17k for an ed30 these days are living in cuckoo land. I thought i would miss my ed30 more but its been ok, back on topic lol.
