Started a few days ago, whenever I brake there like a clunk, at first I thought it was coming from the front brakes but now after an hour drive with no music apart from my clunk I am 99.9% certain it's coming from the rear.
Jumped in the car this morning, doing a turn in the road (literally crawling) and it did it then, drive at 30 and brake it will do it, same on the motorway at 70. it's the same loudness each time but then it seams I can brake softly and it;s fine then if I brake a tiny bit harder it does it. yes when I started the car I was rolling and it did it? I tried to voice record it today, tapped the brake pedal a few times so you could hear it, sio should here roughly 2-4 knocks in each brake sequence. Hope this can get fixed as it's pretty worrying tbh!

(It will ask you to download or open, I can 100% say this is safe, it's hosted on my Apple me account as I recorded straight from my iPhone, trying to find a host that will host and allow you to play it only for free.)
Please help lol! Also my brakes have been really really squeeky the past month if this has anything to do with it? Discs and pads look fine though?
Thanks
Simon

hello, are you sure its not those stupid ball type ends on the parcel shelf straps? remove the parcel shelf and try it....let me know
-
Ball type ends on parcel shelf eh! Hmmm certainly does seam a brake issue tbh BUT I'm going dentist at 10 (yes I hate dentist, yes I need a filling, yes that means needles and yes I am scared!!) So I will wip it out then and see how I get one :happy2:
-
yes the straps that hold the pacel shelf up when you open the boot have ball type ends if you look under the parcel shelf and the knock all the time!
see this:
http://www.my-gti.com/1751/knocking-noise-from-retaining-band-on-luggage-compartment-cover
second picture down shows the ''ball'' type end that causes knocking from the rear
-
Those stupid ball ends drove me insane for months!!! Thought it was my brakes, then removed the plastic under tray, removed spare wheel, worked on the exhaust......then drove with the back seats down and there they were! sh*ts.
-
ha ha yup drove me bonkers so its worth just throwing the parcel shelf indoors and taking the car for a test drive without it in! if the sound vanishes then ya know its ya balls! :surprised:
-
Well that's that problem sorted haha! Didn't realise it was something so simple, feel stupid now thought I had major problems! Still 2 remaining problems!
1) Squeeky Brakes
2) Fear of dentists!!
-
sorted then! coolio
-
this thread is why i 100% love forums!
The OP could have spent real money on getting someone to look at that noise, the would have never diagnosed it!
6mins and 1 reply.
Epic! :happy2:
-
Must admit been great bunch of guys on here, was thiking it was serious and thinking of getting it booked in, then a few mins later and my balls nicely tucked away I am a happy man again :D
-
Ok I can't solve the dentist issue I will leave that to Paul Mckenna. However, I have managed to fix my sqeeky brakes using these:

Trust me they do work as long as you make sure the back of the pad is cleaned with something like white sprit. It does come with a wipe but i didn't think much of it.
Hope they fix it for you :happy2:

Thought I would bump this up instead of starting a new one.
Having another clunking issue, it's deffo a clunk this time and not the rear balls hitting.
Drove very very slow with all windows sunroof etc open and brake and there's a loud clunk, sounds like it's coming from the wishbone area? I got all wheels off checked calipers were tight as there seams to be movement in the brake pedal when it clunks?
It just sounds horrible and doesn't sound good at all, car is fine on full lock and does nothing. Happens every time I brake at any speed?
Any ideas?
-
what brakes have you fitted to the car? are you using R32 setup on the front? have the brakes been worked on lately?
-
Standard brakes, they have just been used normally no high speeds or track days, have tried slamming on a few times to see if it does anything but have had no luck? Replaced the shims to stop squeeky brakes but still nothing.
-
Still causing me agro! Got worse is anything and louder! I can tap my brakes 6-7 times in a row and it will do it each time!
Plenty of pad and disc life left! Had squeaking brakes too and now replaced the copper grease with rubber shims.
It's not the rear boot things it's defiantly coming from the wheels/bay!
Can do it at 5mph, slamming on at 70 or even just slowing down to come to a junction. Sure I can feel a slight jump on the brake pedal too?
Taken it to 3 garages none cab find out what it is!

Subframe Bolts?
I think Mandy got told this for an troublesome click or knock happening under tight turns, and braking a while ago.
-
Don't get anything in turning, any ideas what fixes this? There exact location etc? is this the little kit someone sold that is literally just a spacer/washer?
-
From what i recall, normally comes from the front passenger footwell area, and its just install some washers im sure.
Whether this is what yours does on a worse'r case..
Mine does this knock , but only after being very aggressive in driving style prior to this doing this knock.
-
Got a link to the washers Ste? Sure ECS did a kit wouldn't know where to find it on there site though?

This the one?
-
Yes :happy2:
If my description of where the noise comes from, properly worth a punt.
-
Any news from the OP on this fix, did it work? I have what could be the exact same noise and its driving me crazy, been to the dealers 3 times now and off again to a different place tomorrow but if this could be a fix I may need to investigate, seems a small price to pay especially if it MIGHT work.
Has anyone else had this clunk and fixed it?
-
Someone I know with their Ed30, had them replaced, but I'd didn't cure this knock :sad1:
