Title: Its time to buy, but before I do, a quick Exhaust question !
Post by: Britishlion on February 04, 2011, 12:47:12 pm
OK, all this talk about exhausts is making me twitchy and I think i want a milltek non resonated.

But, quick question. I am sure i have read somewhere (before you start, I have searched) that GTI's don't really benefit from a cat back and you are better off spending the money on the down pipe and something else ! cant remember, think centre pipe?

From what i remember, people saying the stock cat back is suffiecient and changing these two instead is more beneficial power wise and will still create that rumble !

is this right or am i talking sh*te ?

If your just going for power the downpipe only would be the best bet to start then add the cat back system at a later date :drinking:

I fitted a cat back non res Milltek to my last GTI & was very pleased with it.Looks & sounds great which is what i wanted,i'm not bothered about extra power gains.

I guess that is what i am kind of asking, i am going to go to stage 1 but no further. i seem to remember the down pipe and centre being non resonated is what produces the rumble ?

or is it the cat back

I think it's the non res section that gives it the noise. There not boy racer/ chav style loud just a nice rumble on the over run & when you give it the beans.Get better as the miles go no. :happy2:

turbo will spool quicker with downpipe and a slightly louder deeper tone but not much.

if your going stage one and deffo no further (i once said that now im stage 2+) then a non res catback is right for you as it will give noise

I managed 3 months standard 9until the warranty ran out) then it all got addictive.
I would go for the downpipe, I know you say that you won't go to stage 2, but I can quote you in 12 months when you have, and laugh.
And the benefits to the downpipe outweigh the plus's of the exhaust.

My ED 30 is stying standard & as it came from the Factory other than the Pioneer sat nav that was fitted by the last owner. I think i would end up in the divorce court if i start spending on it after only having the last GTI just over a year.

I planned to do nothing to my gti but after listening to the sound of the milltek on another car i just had to have one!
I have heard that a non res is too loud when fitted with the downpipe so i got just the cat back system, it's really starting to sound great now after 5000 miles but soon after getting the zorst i had the uncontrolable urge to get it remapped!  :rolleye: the upgrading bug is well set in now but a lack of funds holds me back from time to time.

saying that, i have just bought a set of eibach's for it which will be fitted once the warmer weather comes as i'm a bit soft for laying under the car in the cold these days! :ashamed:
