Can anyone give me a part number for the VAG tool T10118. Its a hooked tool for assembling the door handle cable and attaching it to the handle mechanism. Or better yet tell me I don't actually need it to put an exterior door handle back together or there is an alternative to the official vag tool about :signLOL:

Also can anyone tell me what the bolt type / size (spline?) is that attaches the door lock unit to the body, the ones marked as '6' below:

The bolt is a M8 spline not sure on the tool??

You don't need the tool, but you need to set the lock before putting it back. However once you put it back and release it then you need to get it right first time.
If you want to buy the tool just use the VAG tool code T10118 and the dealer will order it, when I bought it it was around £10

You could quite easily make that tool out of a length of welding wire and a pair of grips! I made a coil pack removal tool the other day in a similar fashion and it worked a treat.

I did think that I could bodge something together involving a coathanger but if its only a tenner its probably worth the investment. Inexperience is enough of a hinderance with a job like this without dodgy tools helping but a good suggenstion :happy2:

Bearing in mind I haven't disassembled anything is it obvious enough when you do if the lock isnt set? What do you mean by 'setting' the lock? If you dont get it right first time is this when the tool comes in handy?
Have you taken the door skin off and replaced the lock unit yourself before? If so I'd be grateful for any info / a walk through the procedure.

When I fitted puddle / warning lights in my rear doors, my door controller didn't support them. So I ended up taking the rear door skins off so I could wire them into the lock. Before I put the outer skin back I set the lock with the spring in diagram, the purpose is to put tension on the grab handle. So once the outer grab handle is pulled the spring slides of catch and providing it has been refitted properly the grab handle will spring back after it is pulled
what information are you after, how to get the skin off?

Thanks for the info and the link, both are invaluable.
Taking the skin off the door looks simple enough, I was just wondering if there were any unforseeable pitfalls along the way really. Does the rubber strip at the top of skin come off with the skin or does that have to be removed first?
Also you say the inner door card has to come off to fit the new lock unit, and I don't doubt you, but its not mentioned in the workshop guide as far as I can see. Could you explain why it has to come out as well? I've taken the passenger side door card off before and its not too bad but I've found it rattles a touch more than it did before so not overly keen to go down that road if I can help it.

The rubber cover will come off with the skin so don't worry about it.
The only thing I would say is make a note of the screws when they come out as there are 3 different types
I don't know if it is the same on the front door but on the back there was a screw behind the rubber bellows.
The reason for the door card to come off is
The interior handle has a cable which goes to the lock
