Title: Nixie Clock Project
Post by: rich83 on February 07, 2011, 07:10:59 pm
So, after seeing cmrdfires nixie clock on flickr i decided that, (a) i had to have one and (b) making one would make a nice little project.

Incase you are wondering what the dickens a nixie clock is, here is crmdfires (i hope you dont mind, i stole your photo). It uses six Nixie Tubes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nixie_tube) to display the digits (a precursor to the 7 segment LCD), and a crystal oscillator so it should keep fairly good time.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm2.static.flickr.com%2F1419%2F654402612_aa000e3ac9_z.jpg&hash=ccef5ee795af9044f8cf512702e0ff2518ec21d4)

I have just bitten the bullet and bought a kit from ebay with all the components and tubes included.  :scared:

I shall update this thread when start burning my fingers and swearing at resistors!

Nice one Rich  :happy2:

I think I'd like to mount mine under some stainless steel similar to the example in the listing.

Could get a mate of mine to water jet it out for me.

I was expecting to read where in the Eddy it was going to get installed.

No worries Rich  :happy2:

'cos I'm a geek, I wrote a little writeup when I built mine a couple of years ago.

@people saying to put them in the Eddy, here's a guy from Australia who's fitted a Nixie tacho...

Wouldn't recommend that though!

Haha... that is insane!  :stupid:

Ive just one worry... these things carry 170V to some of the board, do you have to be carful handling them one they have been unplugged?

I plan to make a case for it maybe out of wood.

I've shocked myself once off mine while it was still plugged in, it's a DC voltage but very low current so it's only a tingle. Wouldn't worry about it too much once disconnected as the caps discharge pretty quick.

Good to see the build is going well chap  :happy2: That K155 driver looks very new to me, must be a 90s production one.
What's the micro on there, I can see it's by Microchip so guessing it's a PIC16 of some kind? VCC and HV numbers look good  :drinking:

You have an eagle eye... its a PIC16F1936, whatever the heck that is!  :scared:

All the board and components are new... its just the tubes that are old.  :happy2:

It's a pretty standard 16-bit microcontroller, I used an earlier version (16F877A) in quite a few projects at uni and at home so I'm quite familiar with the family.
Nowadays no one makes their own micro boards, they just use an Arduino...

Reason I comment on the newness of the K155 driver is that they aren't made any more! The drivers I used on my clock were 80s-vintage, and IIRC production must've stopped in the mid-nineties unless someone's restarted. OC all the other bits apart from the tubes will be brand new.

These are lovely little devices to have, and getting scarce as the world supply of Nixie tubes is used up. They don't make them any more!

I was actually wondering where Rich's IN-8 tubes come from as I thought the supply of them was exhausted a couple of years ago. Someone must've found another warehouse full of them!

LOL, one of the fun things to do in life is go to a PC World and ask them if they had any flux capacitors in stock, the guy would go off to check and then you could make your hasty exit!  :signLOL:

In the end.. i took the easy option, and I have bought a case machined out of african sapele wood, it will just need sanding and finishing!

Should look like this...

Looks smart, especially with the blue underlighting...

I quite like Laurence Wilkin's machined ally case he made for his "Bigtime" clocks:

I think the case looks pretty good too...   :jumpmove:

Nearly broke it yesterday removing the 3 switches and repositioning them on the opposite side of the board (so it fits the case design), it was a total pain!

I am not sure a wooden surround suits the tubes. That ally one looks the biz, all personal choice of course, i think they look great with a industrail look.  :happy2:

....You took the words out of my mouth - That's exactly what I think and was going to post.
