Title: Twintake & Eibach Pro kit fitted
Post by: Weston on February 10, 2011, 07:43:39 pm
Just got my car back and am very pleased with the result. The ride is more firm but not uncomfortable, and the intake does make the car feel quicker. Not sure whether it actually is but it does look and sound better. I think it's about time I started a build thread, maybe at the weekend...

I have no quantative measurement of power increase so can't really say. I wouldn't go back in time and not buy it though  The engine cover is no longer on, but I'm not bothered about that

You can cut your engine cover to fit, so you get engine cover and twin take in. :happy2: http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,11138.0.html

.
Another alternative to cutting a stock engine cover to fit with a Twintake is this:

http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,11702.0.html

I think that an engine cover on a road car offers quite valuable protection. Also, our 2.0T FSI lowly 4-pot ain't pretty to look at.

I too have the twintake, def worth the money, and looks ace.
Don't know of  anyone doing before and after rolling roads. But have heard it offers about 10bhp max over stock.
The stock cover modded fits great as well, just have to make sure you cut off enough and the right parts too.

(and as everyone else is in pic whoring mode:)

I'll get round to sorting the cover somehow. As it's out of sight it'll be a while. I'll upload some pics once I've removed the last few months grime. I've just been out again and noticed a lot more noise with the stereo off, and it did seem to pull better so maybe it has made a difference  :pomppomp:

....More than 10bhp gains. Dyno plots etc:  http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,9988.0.html

Yours is my absolute favourite modded stock engine cover so far, Al

I wasn't in picture-whore mode before but now I am!

you would need to respray the pipework (ala Luke at Plush automotives twintake)
then get a carbon fibre  centre strip and repaint the plastic cover too,
( A lot of work, but would look fantastic when done!)

Don't know if he painted them himself or sent them away for the work. May be worth getting in touch with him, though know he is really busy lately.

.
If you haven't bought the Twintake yet, speak to Forge (John Withers 01452 380999 and mention my name) and I'm fairly sure they could supply one finished in silver - They use a very high quality powdercoat specialist.

The carbon centre strip is from TTshop and you'd have to stick on your own VW logo - I used a blue&white enamel one.

Buy a secondhand oem cover and use a dremel. There's threads already here about how-to - NeilM for example.

You're very welcome - It's good we can all help each other  :grouphug:. And the Thank You click is always much appreciated  :drinking:

If you go ahead with this, use black Tiger Seal to stop the centre strip from rattling against the engine cover. I can tell you more detail about this* if/when you go ahead.

Edit: * Probably best that I update my thread in the How-to section later today... Job #432!

....It's not especially loud. You can hear it but it only sounds louder according to how suddenly you use your right foot. Post a link to the YouTube vid you heard and I'll comment further.

Well that's quite a good recording and fairly typical of the Twintake when the bonnet is open and heard from the front. However, it'll sound different with the bonnet closed (quieter) and even more different from inside the cabin depending also on factors like bonnet lining and engine mounts.

You don't hear it much from outside when passing unless loaded under throttle and suddenly lifting off (fun to hear in a tunnel). There are no chavvy constantly swishing sounds. Sound is very subjective though.

Just to add a little more info on the Twintake sound:

I find that if you consciously listen you'll hear a fairly constant Darth Vader breathing (as in the vid but quieter) and only hear the additional sounds according to your use of throttle. So, you can actually play it to hear as you want, not forgetting of course that as you are playing it via your right foot the car will respond accordingly!

As someone who is used to listening and mixing recorded music tracks within a song, I feel that the mix balance is on the sweet spot - At least it is on my car.
