I have noticed that driving slow in 1st gear say 10mph the gearbox has a noticable whine especially when on/off the throttle is this normal?

nope not normal, but you should be out of first by 10 miles an hour, its really only for getting the vehicle moving. does it do it in D-mode.  :smiley:

Sounds like a gearbox bearing?

11months 5k miles sounds like a wiring noise in first upto about 8mph driven with the radio off.

Get yourself off to the dealers for a check, and turn your radio on in the meantime.  :wink:

Just noticed mine does this - was stuck in traffic on the M3 today and up to just under 10mph when on and off the throttle there was a noticeable transmission whine.

After 10mph it was as normal .... car due for service in next month.  Think I may mention it to them .....

I think you'll find that a slight whine is normally noticeable if you progress slowly in 1st.

It's not usually noticeable because 99 times out of 100, you are accelerating harder and quickly change into 2nd because 1st on the GTI is a fairly short gear.

I think it's normal and not a problem.
