Recently I have had to limit my non essential excursions on the road because of high fuel costs.
Things are tough for me personally but then that is because I work for myself and Dec/Jan are always quiet in the creative industry.
If fuel prices keep getting higher and higher in the coming months I will seriously have to consider trading in my beloved black GTI and replacing her with a Golf GT TDI or something similar. Quite a shame considering I have only recently acquired my Mk5 Golf.
I just wanted to know how far peoples wallets would stretch before they played into the governments hands and started running smaller engines?
-
its difficult to say what i would pay. i think if fuel prices go to the likes of 1.70+/litre then i would consider the swap to a diesel. and then it would have to be a pretty impressive diesel to make me swap because im not a huge fan of the power delivery on diesels.
the only ones ive found that i liked were BMWs. I wouldnt drive any less though. if i want to go somewhere ill go. i cycle to work anyway so its not a huge issue for me, and i only travel around 500 miles/month at the most
-
i have an .:R32 to play in and a diesel defender for mile munching
i guess it costs what it costs but not much you can do about it really, i dont necessarily think its the fuel type you should be looking at but more of the engine size and consumption
-
.
I won't let the barsturds grind me down so I don't take much notice of the fuel costs.
I'm not giving up a performance car which sounds good that easily and I hate the sound of diseasals unless on a truck or similar.
Quality of miles before quantity of miles!

What a depressing thread........ :sad1: :driver:
-
it was 80p a ltr 8 years ago. :sad1:
anything above 1.70 and id buy a 50cc scooter and keep the .:R in the garage.
-
.
I don't register the price per litre displayed on the pump, I just fill up 26 litres at a time because anything over 25 counts as a V-Power tankful and maximises the pay back from Shell later. I always pay by card and continue driving.
Yes, I am very lucky in that I don't work and therefore commute and I don't have a mortgage or wifey to support :pomppomp: :jumpmove: :pomppomp:
-
^^^I didn't know that. There's me with my 50litres refuelling.
EDIT: RR have you received fuel vouchers this month? When do they tend to arrive?

....I received mine in December for January and February. So I'll expect some more vouchers in early March. I tend not to remember exactly when such things happen - I'm very 'here and now' about everything and don't plan much for the future either as I might not make it. I've survived well so far.

Where's the vote option for......
I don't care how much it goes up, I'll still need my fix!

Sorry if this seems like a depressing thread but my life will be more depressing if I have to give up my GTI and go back to Diesel power
RR you lucky lucky man and good tip re the Shell Full tank of petrol!!

....Thanks, John :drinking: That option has now been added :happy2:

id love to click the i don't care link, but everyone has they're price. As i said, it would have to be a monumental increase in fuel price paired with me doing high mileage to make me swap.
the only cars id consider would be a 123d or 330d, 335d because they are immense when mapped

....Yeah, I think BMW deffo offer the best diesels currently out there but having owned a petrol straight-six Beemer it would still break my heart.
-
My last fill of 55.58 litres cost me £79.42p. Last august for 55.26 litres it cost me £67.36. Now I know £13 a fill isn't a lot and I am getting the mileage as this is for Diseasel. However if fuel went up to say £2.00.9 p/l then I would be paying £111.66 for a tank of fuel :surprised:. This would work out very expensive if your doing a lot of miles per month.
We are paying more now for fuel than when the oil was at $140 per barrel. Current price for Brent crude is $101.43 and it's only risen from $89 in the last few weeks due to Egypt.
I know we have had a VAT increase and also fuel duty added twice. But me thinks somewhere in all this the oil companies and the government are getting a pound of flesh and then some. BP posted profits of a 90% increase on last year.
It's about time they passed some of that back to the consumer and invested in finding an alternative. It ain't gonna last much longer for them
-
I have the GTI for fun and a mini cooper d for commuting. 100 miles to £10 of diesel is keeping me positive. I only did 200 miles in the gti in the last 4 weeks so petrol costs aren't making too much difference to me now and after using a diesel, a 250bhp gti feels like a formula one car in comparison

I have driven the 123d and the 330d and both are brilliant as standard, god knows what they could be when mapped. So are you saying you would rather have a BMW diesel than a GT TDI stock?

Id rather have the BMW standard than a golf TDI with a remap
ive driven the Gt TDi and vRS TDI and want impressed at all. ive driven a stage 2 DE-DPF Octavia vRS but id say that was only comparable to a stage 1 TFSI in performance terms
If i were to get a diesel it would need to be over 200Hp standard to make me consider it, and then id have to map it
-
Shame they don't make a 135D that would be a nice little machine :driver:
However i would be quite happy with a 170D. My Slingshot is running at about the same as a 170 now with the Shark Map and it's definately no slouch. Nowhere near TFSi levels when mapped but it still shifts quite well.
-
We are currently getting through an average of £100 a week on fuel to run the ED30 :scared:
Unfortunately getting closer every day to the point where i'll have to seriously consider a swap to the black stuff... 123d would be most likely choice, very impressive drive :happy2:

a 135D would be nuts. Id be keen to try a stage 3 2.0TDI though, 260Hp with 400lbft of torque would be nice
-
Its not a case of "i need my fix"... its a case of, ive got to get to work! My job would be unbearable without the use of a car!
-
It's a toughy, you want to stop driving so they (oil companies and the government) stop getting your money but then the government wins if you stop driving. All this Eco rubbish that's been drilled into peoples heads makes it so much worse. I think BP reported higher profits than last year because of the oil spill?
-
The oil spill was last year though. Imagine what they would have got if that's hadn't happened :surprised:
-
I'm in a more fortunate position than most, I have a variety of electric cars to use for commuting/boring driving* (popping down to the shops etc) and it costs me £1.50 or so to recharge overnight (that's about 60-70 miles range).
For longer journeys and more fun driving I have the GTI and don't mind paying the petrol for the enjoyable drives. But I used my Golf regularly for a couple of weeks again in Jan and was shocked at the petrol :surprised: I remember when I started driving it was like 70p/litre! :scared:
*although I use the EV for "boring" driving, it's actually quicker 0-30mph than the GTI! 450Nm of torque :scared:

Proton Saga EV. Didn't get as much attention as our series hybrid did, the Exora Range-Extender EV, which won the award at the Brighton to London Future Car Challenge for "Best Extended-Range Electric Vehicle".

I had exactly the same thoughts a week ago. I put £140 of petrol in my car over the course of the weekend due to a 400 mile round trip. I was seriously thinking of selling the Ed30, chopping it in for a cheap A3 TDI or a BMW 123d and keeping a bit of cash to chuck into the house.
It has just turned 3 years old and 50k miles, so thought it was wise to get rid of it whilst it still had some value in it and before too many more miles went on it.
I decided against it though as I won't be happy in a lesser specced and lesser performing model and know I will regret selling the Ed30. I bought it new, worked hard to get it and specced it exactly to how I want it, so it seems silly to get rid for the sake of it as I suffered the depreciation on it and think I need to get my moneys worth a bit more. I think I was just down in the dumps as I had to fill it from empty to full twice within a matter of days.
I could probably halve my fuel bills easily by getting a diesel, but someone asked me what I would spend the money on that I save. Errrr, something else like the Tesco shop, was my reply. I don't smoke, don't drink that much and have no kids to consider so I'm keeping it. However, when it does come time to change then my next car is more than likely going to be a TDI of some sort.
I'll probably be having the same thoughts in a couple of weeks as I have another 400 mile round trip to do and will be grumpy again when I get back

Me too....fill up at least once a week from empty to full. Probably spend £350-400 a month just on petrol.
-
.
It's often best not to think about what your total spending is on things you enjoy - It can spoil the enjoyment if you let it. As long as you've got your debts under control and food and a roof over your head, what does it matter?
-

Spooky Clare! Exactly how i've been thinking about mine lately! 3 years old now and 45K and with a 60 mile a day commute taking a £70 tank plus £30 for weekend funsies, but like you i really can't bring myself to let her go, still looks and runs like new and any fuel saving i got from changing would be wiped out by taking a hit on mine and the increased depreciation on the new one..
Besides it still makes me smile on each and every journey so going to stop worrying about keeping the miles down for the next owner and try and ignore the fact that i spend more on unleaded than on my mortgage
-
Its funny isnt it... i have sat in my lounge on many occasion in the last 6 weeks thinking "Im gonna have to sell it, its just not making financial sense "
Yet when driving it to the petrol station i couldnt care less what it costs to fill up cos its just total hoot to drive... but its does sound like we are in a simiar situation re: fuel bills!
-
Just sat and worked out my fuel bill for Jan and with the recent increases I am now topping £1k a month on fuel for the first time :scared: :scared:
-
:scared: :scared: i think that would be the turning point for me.

Christ... how many miles? I usually to about 25k a year, and i thought that was a lot!
-

....But isn't a high percentage of your mileage for work purposes and therefore you get that work fuel subsidised or even fully paid for?
-

Fook me. According to Road Trip I'm looking at around £1800 per YEAR with my current consumption over the last 8k miles.
Does the P in Steve P stand for Petrol
-
well i believe his last name is £

40k PA of which 80% work but as it's getting to my permanent place of work it isn't paid for or claimable.

....Ouch! That's a bummer :sad1: I don't suppose there's a clever way around that one. If your employer were to pay you a 'bonus' which just happens to cover it it's not tax free. As long as you earn enough money for your needs there's no point worrying - Win some, lose some.
-
^^^ It doesn't bothered me, just surprised by how much it's came to last month.

Yeah seems we are mate!
It's a good job i love the damn thing though, and like most relationships it can be very trying lol! We went through a rough patch few weeks back which started with the MOT failure and the subsequent retest fee / cost of fitting the new brake hoses / new fluid etc, jumped in the car outside PSI and it bonged up for a service in 1000 miles... drove 3 miles and it bonged for fuel, 2 weeks and £400 spent on servicing later it bonged for fuel on the way back from VW and bonged for a brake light bulb as i pulled on the drive...
Just felt like it was asking for money every time i turned the key! as i say, good job i love her

BONG!
