The one where they set up a tonne of cameras and then put an elephant carcass amongst it all (which had been humanely put to sleep by a vet after poachers injured it beyond saving btw)
got to be one of the craziest things ive seen in a very long time! :chicken:
when that hyena shoved its head up the elephants a$$ and pulled out the anus full of gas... my god i nearly blew chunks all over the sofa!
-
found a video of it... hold onto your lunch...
(you may have to click it and follow it off to youtube to watch it as embedding is disabled)
-
more, this time pretty much the whole event sped up:
(embedding not disabled on this one - but no hyena a$$ adventures )
-
Wot channel was that on VC ??
-
channel 4 - worth watching on 4 on demand :happy2:
gross but facinating
-
I watched it VC amazingly interesting, but pretty gross!
-
i was really surprised that no matter how rotten the meat got it didnt matter to those feeding from it, acids in their stomach kill off all of the diseases so its safe to chow down no matter what stage the carcass was at
-
.
I watched it but am surprised if people find it gross - It's only the circle of life and all very natural. Worrying about the reduction of vulture population though.
I thought the Hyena getting surprised by the elephant farting was hysterically funny - No wonder Hyenas laugh.
-
Yup couldn't keep my eyes off it although SWMBO wasn't enjoying it much what with all the blood and maggots!!
Oh and the bit where the Elephants arse exploded all over the hyena's face was television gold! :signLOL:
-
Missed it but that second clip was very insightful. I was surprised that most of the elephant hadn't gone by the first day!
It's an important part in the food chain and I wonder whether it's right that humans should be buried when instead we could also contribute to the food chain.
Wish I could see that farting vid on my iPhone.

.....Well, even buried in the ground humans do contribute to a different food chain, subject of course to how much preservatives are poured into the body and the coffin materials used. I quite like the idea of being left on a platform above ground but Health & Safety bureaucrats wouldn't approve!:

^^^^ :signLOL:
Crikey! Is that the coffin end which can be seen emerging from the structure on the right? Looks like a metal coffin. Who's the dead dude (or dudesse)?
-
RR google "sky burial"
-
Sure is, its all stone!
No idea who it is, they obviously just didnt like the idea of being underground! :signLOL:
-
RR google "sky burial"
Have you been watching Human Planet VC?
-
RR google "sky burial"
....Tibetan sky burial :happy2:
-
nope why?
the whole sky burial thing i read about a few months ago... really graphic stuff but understandable when you consider the areas they do it in the ground it too hard to dig so the feed the bodies to the birds in ceremony
i'll try and find a link to the site i was on
-
... Because it was on that program last week.
-
ah right

http://edwindwianto.wordpress.com/2010/03/14/strange-funeral-customs/

Sokushinbutsu is a pretty far out method...
Buddhism in the extreme! In an obvious game of one-upmanship, a couple of dozen Japanese Buddhist priests have won the self-denial award by successfully mummifying themselves. The process takes years, but begins with the monk taking part in a diet and exercise regimen to burn away all body fat. Then they slowly poison themselves to induce vomiting and diarrhea to empty the body of bodily fluids. Then, the monk crawls into a box and remains in the lotus position until death, when the box is sealed. When the container of horror is reopened, you get a perfectly mummified Buddhist priest- in theory. Many, many people have tried to mummify themselves unsuccessfully. The practice is now outlawed in modern Japan, and thankfully no Buddhist sect advocates Sokushinbutsu.

To be honest I found it easier to watch this than that one born every minute programme my wife has been watching the last few weeks :chicken:

....Do you think she's trying to tell you something, or do you already have any children?
Watching your own child being born is pretty amazing but yuuk if watching someone else's!
I've just been trying to find a clip of Billy Connolly on birth, but no luck so far but it's another classic.

No kids yet but its on the cards in a year or two. I can tell you something though, I won't be near the business end when the time comes. I think that would simply ruin fun time for me from that point onwards

I think I watched a programme about this six years ago or so. The only bit I remember is that the monk reduces their diet to a handful of nuts lasting them a week or something.
