Hi there, not sure this is in the right section but here we go.....
when my car was serviced and MOT'D (not Match of the day) last september i had a advice note about my brake pads, both were around the 80-85% worn mark.
As of yet my brake indicater light hasnt come on as yet, but thought i best sort them in the near future.
obviously the dealer would do them for the usual inflated $, i'm good pals with mechanics who will sort the labour (major discounted), if i sort the pads out
Has anyone got any advice or recommendations on which brake pads to buy and best places to buy them from, (bearing in mind my GTI is stock etc)
Dont mind paying a bit extra to upgrade etc, been searching on the net and EBC Redstuff keep comming up quite often?
Any help would be appreciated

My advice mate is to stick with OEM pads, at stock you will never get Red Stuff pads hot enough (aren't they the race brakes ?) plus i have 4x4 green stuff on the Mo and the brake dust is a joke !
Just my opinion, but stock, go to TPS and buy OEM brakes at half the price of the stealer and get your mate to fit them in 30 minutes !
simples :happy2:

and before you ask ! yes, you can just walk in and pay cash, no trade account necessary !
-
Cheers for the reply,
i think the yellow stuff are the racing ones?
might be wise to stick with the normal/standard ones then
-
I would mate :happy2:
Plus if you resell everything is OEM !

How old is your car?..Not relevent I know but I've just had my 30,000 mile service and the technician said my brake pads are 20% worn after 3 years of driving and numerous laps of the nurburgring.
At that rate it will be 8 years before I consider replacing. :driver:
-
Another vote for OEM from me :happy2:

Ferodo DS2500 are the danglies but expensive!
Others will be along soon to comment.
I have heard horror stories of EBC catching fire on track days so I would give them a miss!
I have loads of customers using EBC yellows and reds on race and trackday cars with no issue whatsoever, 'horror stories of pads catching fire' sounds a little extreme :surprised:
However there are better pads out there but EBC are cheap, greenstuff pads are not great but the redstuff are ok for an everyday pad. My current favourite are Pagid Blues.

I have used red stuff and green and yellow on three different cars over the years, green are very dusty and ok, red take a while to warm up and so do the yellow, I would stick with OEM

ebc is chinese tat with allegedly reg90 approvals from a dubious source. The redstuffs however dont give off dust so if you worry more about clean rims than stopping then ebc are for you,
Berg was selling some ds2500's for the gti in classifieds

DS2500 aren't road legal.
Furthermore they are a bit expensive and work best on track.
If you drive street only go for:
- DS Performance
- Ate
- OE-Volkswagen.

i was dave but no one interested so have just returned them to euro performance.
re legality of ds2500 i thought AP racing had confirmed that once you had upgraded to a BBK the pads were legal, only if you are running standard discs/calipers etc are they not because they are over 15% better than OEM - is this correct Dave?

Well what a subject and timing , just had MOT today ( passed ) but they did state front brake Pads and discs are on their limit.
As I have an ED30 , I want to improve from stock on this without going over the top. i thought there would be some straight forward advise , but seems not.
Liked the Clicky from Stealthwolf and was already leaning towards Ferodo Pads . I guess just 1 question is how slow are the DS2500 to react under normal conditions versus OEM .
Last thing > how important is the disc choice to go with the Pads and what is recommeded.

My car will be 4 years old in September (ive had it since Oct 09) its done about 54,000 miles...the previous owner did most the miles (they did 40,000 in two years).

Anyone know the best and cheapest plAce for sum DS2500 pads and sum discs 2go wiv them??
-
Ive got some OEM equivalent Pagids which are Reg90 approved, they're the proper ones as well in the dark blue box instead of the EuroCarPart Light blue box rebranded stuff. Just high quality normal pads, if anybody wants em cheap get in touch.
DS2500 are not reg 90 but the sentiment over on SCN seems sensible.
The only performance pad that is Reg90 I believe is the RS4-2-1 Black pad from Pagid....Standard on a Carbon Equipped Veyron, Enzo and DBS. Its a soft pad designed to do maybe 15,000 miles prior to wearing out and to preserve the discs.
You may think pads for Carbon Discs are something special but in effect they are just very soft normal pads with a high temperature headroom, one of the lads on the TT forum put some RS4-2-1 into a porsche setup and couldn't get them to fade on track/ring/road...anywhere. They're well over 200 quid though
The true Carbon/Carbon setups on F1 & LMP cars are very different to the Carbon Silica setups on Supercars etc. Set of pads for 2 grand anybody?
I can get DS2500 for a GTI for 125 if it helps maybe a bit less actually

EBC Yellowstuff, part DP41517R are are R-90 approved (from MSW) Apparantly these are used on police cars too.

Apparantly these are used on police cars too.
You got a link or reference or a teensy bit of proof that thats the case........as I would be very surprised if that was the case, many police cars are on direct long lease with the manufacturers and they'll come with spares packages. Anyway theres too much smoke with fire with these EBC pads, the testing for their reg90 approval took place in the far east and their success is in the fact that they have the biggest margins for distributors.
Dont know anybody whos had a good experience with them on track
Chinese frickin tat if you ask me

Listen....
Does everyone who posts here need proof of information ? Let me know when everyone has to include a document or link following every post. Some information people maybe cant prove, but it doesnt mean they are wrong to post here does it Dave !

Think Tabs and Jon (aka duvet) set fire to a set each on track, great for testing the fire retardant properties of your alloys, not so great for setting a decent lap time... :signLOL:

If anyone is still interested in crappy EBC rear pads:

I know of some others having the same issue.
