Had the MOT done today, passed but with a couple of advisory's.
First was a little bit of corrosion / pitting on the inside face of the front drivers side brake disc - fair enough I'll get new discs and pads as they've done 55k and probably towards the end of their life anyway.
Second one is a little more troubling, the 2 year old / 20k falken fk452's I've got on the back (with about 5mm tread left) are showing 'slight high / low spots on the inside edge'. The exact same reason I prematurely binned the Dunlop Sportmaxx's that were on previously. I had the alignment checked at the time and all was OK, read the many posts on the faults with the dunlops and put it down to that. But obviously thats not the whole story.
Fair enough the tyres have done a fair bit of mileage and apparently the high/low spots are very slight but I'd be interested to hear others experience of this issue. I thought it was pretty much confined to the Dunlops but clearly not.
Ah well, an excuse to put ps3 on the back as well as the front :grin:

I haven't experienced any trouble over 2 1/2 year with 17" goodyear ultragrips, 18" Bridgestone potenza re050a, 18" Toyo proxes R1R.
I would try the Michelin Pilot Super Sport over the PS3 if you are after 4 new tyres anyway :drinking:

Quite common this. I had 2 sets go 50p shapes on my old mk5. What year is yours? 05/06?

Same thing happened to me with Falken FK452s on my old A3 :fighting:
Iirc Falken are part of Dunlop anyway and share carcass/tread technology, rumour has it that the FK452 is just a cheaper Dunlop Sportmaxx with a different tread pattern, both are best avoided imo...

It is indeed an 05 plate.
Interesting about the Falken / Dunlop connection. That could very well explain it.
I had PS3's put on the front in December and have seen the light. The PS3's are absolutely fine for my requirements and will stick to them rather than the super sports.

05... intersting, as mine was also an 05 plate!
I had alignment done which didn't help. In the end I got the rear shocks replaced (180quid, so cheaper than chewing up tyres every 6 months), and that fixed it. :happy2:

Interesting - I had the alignment checked 2 years ago when I discovered the dunlops were almost worn through on the inside edge and apparently it was spot on. Since its taken 2 years for the replacement tyres to show a very slight wear of the same type I am inclined to put it down to a poor choice of tyres just now. MOT tester (dealer) didn't find anything wrong or have any possible explanation other than the type of tyre either. Will keep an eye on it and will keep your finding in mind - could be the start of a problem. :happy2:

I had premium brand Goodyear F1 GSDs on and even they got chewed up and 50p'd within a year (about 20k-25k miles).. so i dont think its tyre brand related. It was wheels in motion (chesham) who advised it might be the shocks.
It bugged the life out of me for a long time on my TDI. :mad:

Goodyear are part of Dunlop too... :wink:
Any directional tyres appear to a problem with the MK5 setup, Sportmaxx, FK452 and GSD3 are all directional, however i've had no problems whatsover with Assymetrical type tyres on any of the 3 MK5 chassis cars i've had :happy2:

Hmm maybe it was tyres then :signLOL: ... because the last set of tyres i had on were Contis and they were fine!

I've now had 4 pairs of Goodyear asymmetrics and currently am on Dunlop Sportsmaxx asymmetrics all round. No problems with the Dunlops so far and one problem with driver's side front on GY asymmetric with excessive tyre wear on inside only. Bad! Down to canvas, rest of tread was 5mm. VWR thought it was down to tracking/alignment.
Car has been recently laser aligned and tracked on Hunter rig and only needed a small Toe adjustment since VWR set it up in 2009.

I've experienced this problem with every set of tyres I've had on the back axle so far, including the Dunlops it left the factory with and both Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3's and Asymmetric's. I've had alignment checked and even had the rear camber altered slightly in an effort to fix the problem but still no joy. My car in an '06 plate and I'm genuinely considering binning the OE shocks and getting some Koni FSD's to replace them, especially since my car has now done over 100k so the original ones are probably showing their age.

mines an 07 plate and when i bought it it had conti sport 2's on the back and they wore unevenly on the inside edge

Replaced the rears on my '07 GTi after 4 weeks of buying the car from a dealer...Bridgestone Potenza's were making an awful racket despite begin 'legal' - thought a wheel bearing had gone!! Replaced with Vredestien's - all quiet on the western front now...

Has anyone diagnosed the definate reason for this uneven wear?? I too have uneven on the rear and am thinking of replacing with Michelin PS3's or conti 3's..
What do you's think between the two?

Mine ruined some V-groove F1s, had the alignment changed to my specifications as it was completely out from the factory. Didn't have the problem with the next 2 sets.
The key is here, the factory settings are wrong. If the alignment place checked and reset them against the unrevised factory settings, then they're still wrong!!
You want no toe and either the same or slightly less camber than the fronts - depending on how loose you like the back end?

Just to add I have had this happen on my Focus TDCi Sport, as well as my Mk5 GT sport Golf and my friend had the same on his Leon FR and my neighbour has just had the same on his A3.
Happened on Toyo T1-R's, Eagle GSD3's and Assymetrics, Bridgestone RE050A's and Continentals so I would summise tyre choice/brand has little to do with it.
From all of the cases of this I have read online across various owners forum nothing seems particularly conclusive other than getting your alignment checked to potentially cure.
Very annoying mind!!

....I reckon it's down to alignment too. There's been quite a few reports on here about uneven tyre wear on Dunlop Sports but I haven't experienced any such problems and my alignment has been recently checked on a Hunter laser rig and found to be still spot on since VWR did it!
Because of the reports I've been keeping an extra close eye on my tyres.

Just to clarify. Am I wanting to get the alignment or the geometry checked? Obviously alignment is a lot cheaper and easier to do.
If its full geometry, how can I lay my hands on the correct specs without going to stealers? I know a place that can do it, just want it done right..
