Title: Thinking of Buying One...
Post by: SimonBash on February 25, 2011, 05:53:37 pm
Hello All,

Newbie on your site! I have found the site as I am tempted to change my BMW 120d M Sport 3 Door for a MK5 GTi.

I'm getting tired of the 1er's niggles, rattles etc......how do you guys find the GTI perspective?

Welcome Simon.  :happy2:

Erm you might want to look elsewhere if rattles bother you. a lot of Mk 5's carry a few rattles, can be sorted though.  :happy2: otherwise they are solid cars with great fuel returns for a pretty tuneable and fast engine.  :happy2:

thanks, what sort of mpg can be expected on the standard engine with a manual box?

Quoted for truth

Urban only I'd say low twenties, mixed urban high twenties, motorway you can get low 30's without trying and high thirties if you're careful.  Individual driving style will have a big impact of course.

ive not long had my GTI i came from the new shape Honda civic i-vtec
and i love it to pieces,i have a small rattle front dash just behind my speedo and squeaky
cam belt which i'm getting sorted on warranty hopefully other than that it feels solid
and responsive, mpg is all down to how you drive it, i have managed to sit at just under 40mpg
on some dual carriageways going by the onboard trip computer, not to sure how accurate it is though

its a great motor  :happy2:

Thanks for the replys guys  :happy2:

120 was averaging 47 for ages in mixed driving (wife uses it mostly) which has dropped to around 40-42.

I've had a MK4 1.8T GTi (2001) and MK4 2.3 V5 (2002) before and really liked both, particularly the V5.

Is there a particular model year to avoid etc? I only want to spend about £10,000 if possible.

I used to have a BMW 120d Sport.... switched to a bog standard GTI (august 2008 car) and have NEVER regretted it.... more space, quieter, more responsive, more comfortable better in every way apart from economy. On a long run being careful I used to get 52ish.... noe (being ulta careful) i can just about get to 40 - but apart from that DO IT!!!!

My dilemma now is whether to go for an R.... got some bonus money burning a hole in my savings account!

What year was your 120d? I am seriously tempted now, selling the 120 wont be easy, its a 58 plate with only 11,000 miles (3 door) and I dont want to sell it back to the steelers!

Mine doesn't rattle at all. 25mpg town commute though, that's why I'm considering a move to a coupe 1 series (123d)

How do you find the power/power delivery of the GTI compared to the 120d? Mine is a post facelift so has 170hp and a lot of torque so GTI is only a 30hp gain....

Have wanted a MK5 GTI for ages though.....

I chipped my 120d up to 200bhp.... and the GTI was still a massive improvement :)

I have had my GTI for just over 2 months now and absolutely love it. But I was coming from a Mk2 1.6 so a massive step up.

I don’t use it to commute so with my short, spirited journeys I usually get around 20mpg.

But for me it’s worth it as I have wanted a GTI for so long and have finally got one of the best ones :happy2:

P.S. Mine is DSG with no engine mods…yet

Just to throw this in the mix.  I have a GT Tdi 140, not quite a GTi but not to far off now.  Just had it remapped and it's making 193bhp and I get around 42mpg on a half town half rural 40 mile a day journey.

Might be worth thing about if fuel consumption is an issue.
