My New RNS 510 comes tomorrow,i will be removing my RCD300, will i need a new aerial convertor lead as i read somewhere
the rns has a twin aerial socket and the rcd is a single input ?
-
The RNS510 is configured for Diversity - Two antenna and it is highly likely your car will only have one. It will still work but with a reduced capability.
-
by reduced capability, what is reduced ?
The sat nav signal or the radio signal ?
My current stereo "RCD300", if i turn my rear window heater on, the radio signal drops.
-
Radio signal, the Satellite part has it's own GPS connector for you to put the GPS unit under the dash.
Is it a GTI you have? As my GTI had a RCD300 but I've replaced it with a RNS510, I had 2 aerial connectors.
You don't need an adaptor even with 2 though, just undo the connectors off the existing aerial cables and plug them directly into the RNS, then use a bit of electrical tape to keep it in place :)
-
yeah its a dec 2007 (57 plate) GTI
So hopefully i wont need a canbus upgrade
-
Hopefully not mate, luck of the draw, VW might have had a few older gateways in the parts box when making your one, or put a newer one in... Anyone local could VCDS scan to check the revision for you?
As for fitting the RNS, it will be easy, I did mine last night in the dark with just a headtorch and it took about 20 minutes just take your time and it'll be fine.
If you have the 2 connectors, it doesn't matter which way round they go in the aerial slots for the RNS
Let us know how you get on...
-
did you have to change yours ?
if so was it expensive
-
Has anyone got the VW part number for the required flying lead (if necessary)? Struggling to find it listed on ETKA.
Luke.
-
http://www.my-gti.com/1088
that should help mate
-
7L6051551 was £23.83 + VAT in July last year, will have increased since then due to extra 2 ½% VAT from VW :happy2:

Snapey> Just remove the plastic housing and save yourself twenty odd quid.
Creatz> I had to change my Gateway as I have a 2005 GTI and it had an E revision gateway, so upgraded to an AF gateway (approx £60) and took me about 15 minutes to change it but I have DSG so had a bit more room where the pedals are! :)
-
i tried to look at my gateway this morning but the one under my steering wheel looked a bit big ?
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg577.imageshack.us%2Fimg577%2F9100%2Fp1020031p.jpg&hash=5abbd9fa1a25fca93a0d786feb936e5bfc2f1125)
i also found this one to the right above the clutch pedal

if its any of them can you tell me if it does need changing
-
on the manual gear box version uk spec car i cant find the can bus gateway for the life of me !!! :fighting:
-
Well it showed up this morning, just need to know if i need
a new can bus Gateway :scared:

Hi mate, whereabouts in the country are you? I could help if you are near Chelmsford / Colchester Essex or wanted to drive over?
If someone near you has VCDS they can tell you what gateway you have in seconds...
If you look under the steering wheel area, the Can gateway has a big red connector going into it.
Im sure it might have moved on the later cars though, I have a feeling yours will be OK but it would be nice to be sure.
-
I'm Swindon area mate, south west, just off the M4
-
I'm in Bracknell if you travell down the M4 for any reason. (J10).

Cheers for the offers guys, the car is booked in tomorrow so they can look at the "Bird under the bonnet" noise (cambelt)
and I'm going to ask them to check my cam bus gateway as well.
I have had my head under the steering wheel this morning and all around the underneaths and cant find a single plastic unit
with a red plug connected to it,unless its been relocated and i don't need to change it.
anyone else with an 07 / 57 / 08 car that knows if its relocated on there's and if they didn't need to upgrade it ?

Dont worry about changing your gateway unless you have too, I have an 05 car and have wihtout issue been running the cooked firmware with my old gateway. The firmware can be downloaded from the internet I have run 1300 and a 2xxx one that supports voice control without any battery issues.
As for the aerials I also removed one of the plastic shrouds when fitting my RNS to get round the issue of closer fitting, I believe the the shrouds have specific tabs to ensure the right aerial goes into the right tuner so fit the cable you are leaving the plastic on first and the stripped lead second.
-
the RNS 500 i bought is a version C and is already up to date so would cause battery drain if i have the wrong Can
-
you can still install the new firmware as a downgrade if necessary.
-
ahh right i didn't know i could go backwards :happy2:
do i lose many changes in software if i do ?
-
It would depend what firmware the unit is running, but 1300 or the new one I am running (cant remember which version 2xxx) the unit will have all the up-to date functions it just has the can gateway firm ware version from the older firmwares so still manages to interact in the right way with the car. have a look on my-gti at the different firmware versions or vw-navi.
-
I would say that that CECM is quite new so your car is after 07 plate...? the Can Gateway is behind the relay plate from experience of fitting them.
Take your small cubby out at the side of the steering wheel and you will see a line of relays, at the said of that to the left is a tab that you can press and the plate will come toward you. If you shine a light to the back of it you will see the Can Bus it just needs prizing off its pirch and pulling forward.
The other way is to pop the bonnet take the wipers off and take the wiper motor out...after that you will see a square black plate, take the screws out and the can bus is behind that.
Darren

Found it !!!!!! :jumpmove: :jumpmove: :jumpmove: :jumpmove:
Ok so for future reference for all those searching the net without any answer to where the hell the can bus is.
It appears that from Late 2007 (57 Plate) the can bus Gateway was moved to a different location on Golf mk5
I Found mine directly behind the small pull out compartment next to the steering wheel see pic 1
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1199.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Faa464%2Fcreatz%2FP1020041.jpg%3Ft%3D1298922096http%3A%2F%2Fi1199.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Faa464%2Fcreatz%2FP1020046.jpg%3Ft%3D1298922358&hash=35440bfe459b308bc1642d126d4155271952b035)
and in picture 2 its just behind the relay board
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1199.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Faa464%2Fcreatz%2FP1020046.jpg%3Ft%3D1298922532&hash=4a28236e08656fc14a5524cab5d565882f993449)
and picture 3 is the version of Can Bus i have in car 2007 December Model (the cross over period)
Can Bus Gateway : 1KO 907 530 AD

i Hope this helps some of you out searching for this answer
-
lol, i was typen my post out as you posted that darren, i found it about 20 mins ago , but cheers for the reply because what you
said would of lead me to where it was mate.
-
It looks like that has been retro fitted mate? has late 2007 would have been a Q or S dependent on how late it was? AD was fitted to the mk6 golf. By the way the gateway is 1K0 907 530AD
Any way your RNS510 will be fine
Darren
-
If you look on the close up of my Can Bus , you can see the word Continental.
I have the same thing written on my RNS 510
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1199.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Faa464%2Fcreatz%2FP1020047.jpg%3Ft%3D1298923117&hash=bd6ea718fb4c57f34142a2d2ef599735cc991185)
By retro you mean someone has put a brand new can Bus in it,
as that isnt the original to the car
the car use to be an Ex lease car for Johnson and Johnson, do you think it possibly had an RNS 510 OR RCD 510
Before it was handed to me ? as on the paper work i was given it says "removal of phone Kit" ????
or possible that it had a faulty one and was replaced ?
-
Yaaaaay! :jumpmove: that will be fine as said above, much newer revision gateway than you would usually have in that age of car.
Most likely the previous owner upgraded to a RNS or RCD and the dealer fixed the battery drain issue by changing the CAN Gateway.
Now go fit it ;)
-
i did, and the twin aerials don't fit :signLOL:, so im going to order an adaptor tomorrow instead of bodging it :jumping:

Nooooo the plastic connectors come off literally, if you look underneath them, they have a little slit, stick a small flathead screwdriver in, and they just pop off.
Then just plug them in to the aerial ports - if you must, then secure with a small bit of insulation tape and job is a goodun!
Honestly, it's not going to move anywhere when it's pushed back in place! Save yourself the money, trust me I usually love to do things properly with the correct adaptors etc, but for that theres no way it's worth the money of an adaptor for something that's not needed.
My radio reception is perfect as well!
-
Wise words from Shaun!!
Save yourself £18-£20 on the adaptor and pull one of the connectors off!! :signLOL:
-
which one plugs in the stereo ?
the white or the beige one ?
-
Both! And it doesn't matter which way round.
So on the back of the RNS 510 you have 5 ports in total.
1 x Big plug for tv out / rear video camera
1 x Big plug for your ISO connector
1 x GPS Antenna socket
2 x Radio antenna socket (next to each other, the double plug) put the white and beige ones in there.
-
will give that a go when i get it back from VW.
i asked about the can bus today and they confirmed on 11/11/2010 it was replaced
under warranty as it was faulty.
So that is a hell of a result
-
Its not so easy on newer golf to just take the connector housing off guys, they have to be cut off on 2007 onwards leaving just the metal plug.
They don't have the purple clip like on the older cars so you would be better getting the adaptor and leaving the housings on the connectors.
Darren :happy2:

Dont they just have a star clip on the inside that needs to be popped out ?, no need to cut my old Golfs plugs off, I removed the gold circlip inside the housing then they plugs just come off ?
Best pic i can find of the clip inside the housing

Thats correct Shaun but you just need to be careful not to damage the pin while doing it :happy2:
Darren
-
I'm going to buy the adaptor as i plan to put the old stereo back in the car in the future.
If i ever change my golf to a newer one or even sell it then its extra cash or a decent unit in a newer golf :happy2:
-
Fitted an RCD510 at the weekend, softly softly at first, but can do it in 5 mins now, in tonbridge if anyone wants a hand.
My eddy (57) had 2 (White and beige) wires, but with the adaptor Im only using one, surely that can't be right though?!?! Surely it was designed for 2 wires?

I ordered 7L6 051 551 which is the one above
-
Not the one above  the one Ive got has a double connection the the back of the head unit and a single which connects onto one of the existing wires. Plus its alot thicker.

so i can get rid of this one, then unclip the existing wires, or one at least then attached them directly with tape...

Yes do as i put further down in the post , my edition 30 worked fine for 2 years like that :-) other than that its buying the proper cable
-
the cable i bought worked perfect just clipped together,my only worry is
if i put my ear to the unit,it sounds like the hard drive is still working ?

The unit shuts down on a time delay, so wont fully power down until x minutes after the ignition is turned off you can also hear the cooling fan after a long run. This is the reason why certain cars get battery drain as the unit doesnt fully switch off as the communication with the can gateway doesnt work correctly. Since you had the newer version gateway you shouldnt have an issue.
You will know if the unit has fully shut down as you will get the splash screen (VW logo) the next time you boot it up if you havent been away for too long the unit will instantly fire back into life, something like putting a laptop into sleep mode. :happy2:
-
Ok so if I don't get the vw logo tomorrow or how many hours later ?
Then I know there's a prob
-
Just to add i fitted this myself and managed to get 9/10 satellites after carefully placing the antenna under the dash.
So glad i didnt pay anyone to fit it :happy2:

Rightly so mate, enjoy it, I can't believe how good it is, it started telling me about traffic problems on my journey, yet I wasn't even using the sat-nav as such, I was just driving home from work, and lo and behold, a traffic jam just after my turn off!
Top top radio, I'd recommend it to ANYONE, skip the RCD and go straight for the RNS!

also something tomtom make you pay a yearly fee for
-
No VW Logo when i turned it back on after sitting for 5hrs,just came back on like a laptop coming out of sleep.
I'm now worried its not shutting down properly, could it be a setting in VAGcom that needs changing on
the can bus ? if so can someone tell me what it is so i can run it up to my friend.
-
Did it start shutting down properly or did you get a new gateway/change software?
-
Nah it was fine, due to a warranty can bus replacement just before I owned it, I didn't need to
Change it thank god :jumping:
I kept leaving the unit on radio when I switched the car off and
You won't get a splash screen from leaving it on radio as that can come on instantly and doesnt
Require the use of the HDD.
Plus if you unlock the car and open the passenger door on a quiet road, lean over open the drivers door from inside you will
Hear the unit begin to boot up if it's working properly
I should of updated this post really :signLOL:
-
Ah yes I remember you saying! Oh well my new can gateway turns up today so itll be problem solved :signLOL:
-
if your can gateway is located like mine, behind the little cupboard.
its easier to change if you go from the top under the bonnet,
there is a removable plate just underneath the wiper blade motor mate :happy2:
-
I may have to get you to show me later :P What year is yours?
-
Dec 2007 (57 plate)
-
Mines March 07, so it should be in the same place hopefully
-
i'll bring my torch and have a look matey,it could be in a couple of places, but it should be in the same place
-
:happy2: wicked
