I'm experiencing it now and have been for a while truth be told. I think it's since I fitted the Turinis which are 18x8. Car's on 20mm AP springs and is an out of warranty 2006 plate GTI.
Will the change in suspension and wider rims have added stress to the steering rack?
The symptoms are no worse than a grinding noise on full lock, but are there more severe symptoms to come? :scared:
I read Mandy's thread about the longer steering column screws/bolts in detail but I think that is the other steering grind sound at higher speeds.
Unfortunately as my driveway is a rat race and on a corner, I'm experiencing the low speed full lock grind noise - am I correct in thinking a replacement steering rack + motor under warranty is the only tried and tested fix?
Thanks :happy2:

It could be down to that and the screws may fix it,
Though it could be the driveshaft rubbing since the car is lowered. I have been told that mine is the inside of the steering rack rubbing on the chassis. Raised my car up by about 8mm at the front and it has sorted it unless dropping slowly off curbs at hard steering.
Could be a number of things really though, get your local indipendant to look at it when booking something else in. That's what I always end up doing anyway!

Worn front top mounts are also a possibility Pete?

Is it likely to be this Steve, is it perhaps another known issue on the MK5's?
If so, I'll start to look at part no.s and costs etc...
Thanks mate :happy2:

Tell me more :scared:
Since lowering the front end on my 2010 S3 ( 23mm drop ) i get a very light 'tapping / knocking' noise on very low speed full (ish) lock manouvers. Now people have lowered far more without the driveshaft issue, so any guidance would be great :happy2:

My 4motion also makes the noise
I tried fitting new bearings a few months ago and this cured it for a short while, but now it has now returned (although it didn't make any noises for one whole day last week)
Strange how it doesn't do it 100% of the time and with new bearings. Guess I perhaps should have changed the strut tops/housings also?

Just to clarify the sound you experience, is this when turning with full lock at low speed too, like my problem?

The new bearings and top mounts aren't expensive Pete, the labour is though if you aren't doing it yourself.

I had this when I first put coilovers on my gti. It turned out to be the rubber boot on the driveshaft rubbing when it concerteenered on itself under full lock. A bit of grease on the boots resolved it - worth a look. Easy to see if this is the cause with a trolley jack ;-)

Yeah, it is... It's got worse but I've not done anything about it as VW told me it's harmless and I can't afford to fix it anyway!
