I installed it earlier today and so far I'm really liking it. I know Carl has been experimenting, just wondering if anyone else is using it.
There are a couple of compatibility issues for me so far -
Time Machine won't run on a NAS drive.
Parallels doesn't seem to want to work.
Hopefully they'll be ironed out in time for the public release.
-
Are you guys running a test version stu ?
Where can I try it :jumpmove: :jumpmove:
-
Yes mate -
http://imzdl.com/
-
Thanks mate ! That gives me something to do tomorrow now !
Wha are the differences you are finding better ?
-
Other issues I've found
iPhoto can be a bit Laggy.
Don't install as sole operating system as I found (apart from not being able to run parallels) I got the spinning beach ball a few times. Trying to go back to Snow Leopard is then a bit of a problem and you have to force it to boot from the Snow Leopard DVD to enable disk utility to format the drive and reinstall SL.
Really like some of the new features though. Launchpad is quite cool :happy2:
-
Yep, Launchpad is great.
The new mail program seems smooth and so far Safari has been better too.
-
I like some of the new animations too especially when clicking reply to an email.
Mail is great especially now as Emoticons are shown instead of ?? Or small squares. The interface is a lot cleaner too.
Safari seems to be quicker
Launch time of apps seems to be quicker too.
-
Have you found emoticons built into Mail yet Carl?
-
Not yet as I've left it restoring from TM after putting SL back on. You never know they might add it to the Mac App Store
Once I've partitioned again tomorrow I'll have a good mooch about
-
So Apple freaks, Lion is officially available today via the App Store.
Remember to clone your Mac before you install! - http://reverttosaved.com/2011/07/19/mac-os-x-users-clone-your-macs-before-installing-lion/
-
Do you have a link - I don't see it and I've not had an email to say it's released.
-
Should be available around 6PM.
-
Do you have a link - I don't see it and I've not had an email to say it's released.
It's trending on Twitter. The store is also down, so new MacBook Airs are imminent.
-
It's trending on Twitter.
WTF does that mean to a mere mortal such as myself?
-
http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/blog/2011/jul/19/apple-lion-release-wednesday-1330
The expectation is that it will be released at 1330 BST.
-
Lion Server is now on the App Store.
-
Both up now. :happy2:
-
Note the Air is now the entry level portable Mac. £849 for an 11.6" laptop
I think they still need something around the £600 point tbh.
-
Downloading Lion at the moment. :happy2: Looks like its going to take a long time. Apples servers must be getting hammered.
-
£21 for it is it worth it ?
-
£21 for it is it worth it ?
Definitely - I don't think it is a lot to pay at all to be honest...
-
£21 for it is it worth it ?
It's a fairly significant upgrade, and remember, prior to Snow Leopard these updated were at least £100.
For me the changes to Mail are worth the money alone.
-
a good guide on install Lion can be found here - worth a read - http://gigaom.com/apple/mac-os-x-10-7-lion-install-checklist/
-
Mines about 50% downloaded I think.
Done my SuperDuper clone etc, so Im ready for the upgrade now!
-
Lovely update. Currently running Safari in full screen mode. Taking full advantage of the MBP screen size. Mail in full screen is nice too, very iPad in look and feel. The Auto Save features will be great once i have updated all the other apps as well. Mission Control is awesome. Much better than spaces/expose in the past.
-
Downloaded this too seems to be slow at first but it is getting better :happy2:
mail is pretty cool too
scott :happy2:
-
It takes a while to recreate new indexes, then its blistering. Wait till you get used to the full screen apps and mission control. Its revolutionary. :happy2:
-
Mine is downloading currently but with my rubbish sky broadband it will probably be tomorrow before i get chance to update :sad1:
-
Also downloading very slowly :sad1:
-
Mine was downloaded in 26 mins (30MB BB). Takes about 30 mins to install (Dependant on HDD size) and then after that voila away you go.
I've been using Lion on & off since DP1 and went solo with the GM. It is definitely a good improvement over SL :happy2:
-
Took about 8 minutes to install on my 240GB SSD
Onyx doesnt work with Lion though - does the latest version of it work?
-
Stop teasing me about SSD. I will get one soon :signLOL:
Nope the new version doesn't but i don't think it will be long before they release a version that does :happy2:
-
a good guide on install Lion can be found here - worth a read - http://gigaom.com/apple/mac-os-x-10-7-lion-install-checklist/

It's never a good idea to rush into a first release of new software (unless you're a pre-release tester like Carl). Wait for the first patch or two of fixes. But the temptation of new toys is very difficult to resist!
The Apple Discussions forums are a good way of checking what user problems are. In my case, are there any issues running Logic Studio or Adobe CS5 for example - Theoretically there shouldn't be, BUT......
Apple Discussions: https://discussions.apple.com/index.jspa
And specifically 10.7 Lion: https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_os/mac_os_x_v10.7_lion
-
Stop teasing me about SSD. I will get one soon :signLOL:
....What Mac are you running Lion on, Carl?
Btw, SSD's are blisteringly quick!
-
To be honest there has been a lot of QA on Lion, and, like Carl, having been involved in the beta I would say this is a fairly safe upgrade in its current guise. The only element I have been bitten on is losing my decent epson scanner software [Epson] to work with my scanner (Perfection 3170) but there is support through ICA. Bottom line is that any PowerPC applications will not be supported.
-
My macmini is a core duo so I can't update it to lion at all. :sad1:
My mrs is however in USA right now and heading to the applestore when she awakes to get us a nice new MacBook air :jumpmove:
I've may be rather foolishly have opted for the 13" with i7 and 256gb ssd and 4g ram. Works out about a £1000 ish. Though as Robin advises like software it's often best not to dive in on day 1, I'm sure if there are any issues apples excellent support and customer service will deal.
My wife will of course be using the device there for work and unable to bring the box back though..... :innocent:
-
....What Mac are you running Lion on, Carl?
Btw, SSD's are blisteringly quick!
I have
Unibody 15" MBP
2.8ghz Core 2 Duo
8GB 1066mhz DDR3
500gb 7200rpm drive (soon to be an SSD)
To be honest you wont go far wrong with upgrading. The problem with app compatibility lies with the App Developer not Apple. They have had a year to get the Apps to work properly with them. The only App I had a prob with was ESET Cyber Security there is a Lion specific update for it but it's still causing problems so I have removed it for now.
But otherwise it's a very good upgrade and it's not like windows where you should wait for 10.7.1 :happy2:
-
^^
Cheers, Carl and Dom :happy2:
I think I'll wait just a week or two before upgrading to Lion. Can it be done via the App Store do you know? - I've got credit there.
You're right, AppleCare support is second to none and it's always been that way :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy:
-
Robin... ill let you know it Logic 8 and CS5 work. :happy2:
-
Everything pretty much worked for me - from what I checked anyway. It was just Onyx. Oh and Pixelmator needed an update, and it worked fine after that.
-
Yes Robin, Appstore for download :happy2:
-
Robin... ill let you know it Logic 8 and CS5 work. :happy2:
....Cheers but I'm now on Logic Studio 9.1.4 and keeping an eye on these discussions: https://discussions.apple.com/community/professional_applications/logic_studio
Adobe are likely to have any issues already covered but again it's reason for me to take my time before leaping into the lion's cage.
-
App store it the only place you can get it from Robin... its exclusively download only.
Ohh 9... i want 9 for mainstage2
-
Ohh 9... i want 9 for mainstage2
....I haven't personally used MainStage 2 but 'we' (my mate and co-producer Steve) have got v.9 at the recording studio and he has gigged with it via a MBP. He says it's very enabling. The main reason I upgraded from L8 to 9 at home is so we are compatible as I sometimes do further editing at home. He is coming to my 'home studio' this evening for a session (and to drool over my new 27" iMac).
I'm glad to say that the upgrade isn't hugely expensive (unless you're scraping the barrel!). I got mine from Absolute Music. Did you get your Saffire6 from them?
-
Yes 120 quid! :jumpmove:
-
App store it the only place you can get it from Robin... its exclusively download only.
Not strictly true. Apple are making it available on a USB stick for $69.
-
Downloaded yesterday but didn't have time to install so it could be on the agenda for this evening if I get home in time.
I have an Epson Scanner/Printer/Fax all in one and remember issues when SL first arrived. Hopefully if I do have an issue this time it'll be sorted as quickly, problem is my device isn't getting any newer.
Fancy a group buy on SSD's Carl??
-
Fancy a group buy on SSD's Carl??
I wondered if you would be interested. I can always order 2 and split the delivery cost
I will make some enquiries. If any one else is interested then let me know as im sure the more we can get the cheaper they will be if any seller's are interested in it.
-
Moi maybe.
-
Finally downloaded and i must say I'm really impressed. Mine was running a bit slow before but is absolutely flying now. Scrolling up and down pages being reversed has thrown me a little though
-
Ok lets do this properly.
If anyone is interested in a SSD Drive for their MBP or Laptop please register interest below.
Just so you know i will be looking at the OCZ Vertex 3 as this seems to be the best one for a MBP. It will also work perfectly well in a windows laptop and any difference between other manufacturers is minimal and down to personal preference. I will ask any supplier who is willing to do a group buy discount if they will do so on different models however i would expect it only to be on different capacities.
For reference the Stats of a Vertex 3 are:
Available in 60GB, 120GB, 240GB, 480GB Capacities
MLC NAND Flash
Interface: SATA 6Gbps / Backwards Compatible 3Gbps
Native TRIM support - Driven by the second generation of SandForce SSD controller (SF-2281). This means the SSD will TRIM on the fly if the OS doesn't support it

1. vRS Carl - 120GB
2. vRStu
3. Hedge
Be aware this isn't going to happen overnight. I am moving house next week but will aim to speak to a few suppliers during that time. Once i have got the details i will then start a GB Thread for them.
-
I just sold a couple of 160GB SSD's a couple of weeks back as well - didn't think of listing them up here :stupid:
I will contact one of my suppliers and see if he is interested in a discount on a number of items.......
-
Nice one Ifti. :happy2:

Luckily you can change this in system prefs!

You guys want to go for bigger than 120 GB (Carl). OS plus Applications will quickly fill space - Software sizes are forever increasing.
If anyone is interested I can share some tips about running an SSD plus HD internally on the same Mac.
-
.
Do any of you guys use the Apple Magic Trackpad? I didn't think I would like it but it's excellent.
-
sod it just bought it :rolleye:
-
CS5 is fine. No issues so far. Its already a 64bit app too.
Not had any issues with any of my apps.

Why do I?
My apps when I do a restore from TM is 13gb. Take 8gb for the OS and my iPhoto library takes me to 78gb total. I will then use an Optibay to use my existing 500gb HDD as data storage (iTunes library etc)and then I have found a 1.5tb portable drive I can use as a TM backup.
I am only using 153gb of my HDD at the moment and that's with all my data on it less the parallels VM which I run from an external HDD.
A haz dun me reeeeeesurch boss  :P

Yeah i have one Robin for my Mini (mac)
95% of the time i love it but its not as quite as precise as i would like.

....Have spent all evening in Logic which is, as you know, quite a complex interface but managed everything quite well and better than expected. It has encouraged me to use keyboard shortcuts a lot more too.
I did have a strange moment when nothing was happening and I then discovered I was fingering the surface of my desk!
-
:signLOL: Easily done.

I've been loving lion for about a month now and think its great. Only issue for me ATM is using my dymo label printer won't work :(

I will contact one of my suppliers and see if he is interested in a discount on a number of items.......
Any news mate?? I'm thinking of the OCZ Vertex Series 3 120GB.
-
got it loaded last night and i like it  going to have a play around with it today
-

I get mine tomorrow :happy2:
-
Ok as there is little interest i shall stave off pestering people for a group buy.
Ifti i'd be interested in what price you can get the Vertex 3 120GB too :happy2:
-
.
I'm going to sit back and check whether various third-party drivers/software I would need have been produced and any patches from Apple. My free Lion upgrade is valid until 19th August.
-
Hold fire Robin... my version of Logic 9 doesn't work. What are apple playing at, not even testing there own software! :stupid:
-
You've got to update Logic to 9.1.3
-
You've got to update Logic to 9.1.3
Ahh... ok. Just downloading that now, but seeing as it didn't say "Fixes Lion Issues" in the update panel i didn't think they were on the case!
Thanks
Rich
-
Logic 9.1.4 works.
Having some driver issues with my Saffire 6 robin, just downloading an update that should fix it!
Fixed! :happy2:

You need to be on Parallels 6 too... previous versions won't work.

What a nightmare. Had to completely wipe my HD to repair a broken disk and install all my packages again. Only after having to download Lion again and reinstall Snow Leopard. What a palaver. then I realised I lost all my emails because I hadn't bloody exported them from Outlook so they are just a bunch of useless unlinked text files. Now my time machine is fooked. And to make it worse my MBP seems to be a bit laggy now and keeps freezing up much more than it ever has before. Time for a new Mac I think. SSD all the way. :fighting:  :fighting2:
-
My Parallels install doesn't work now.
Seriously what it apples problem with backward compatibility.... :fighting:
-
^
Sorry, but I did tell you guys that installing a brand new .0 version OS wasn't a wise move. And I also linked to the Apple Discussions forum where all sorts of Lion issues are being discussed.
You might benefit from checking these subjects out: https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_os/mac_os_x_v10.7_lion
-
But the next updates won't make old software work, they just cut compatibility.
There are a few things that are annoying me, but they won't be resolved by updates.
-
Rich,
What build of Parallels are you using, it is working great for me.
Dom

....I'm afraid that it happens everytime there is a relatively major upgrade. Compromises get made in the interests of 'progress'.
If the incompatibilities are important enough to your use of a system then perhaps be prepared to switch back to Snow Leopard. Apple TechSupport will help you do this if you need.
-
No problems here at all.
Pretty happy with it so far.

Same here, everything is just better and faster. Relieved cs4 still works, office, in fact everything so far
-
Relieved cs4 still works,
....Adobe always work quite closely with Apple, for obvious reasons. The only Adobe CS apps which won't work are on PPC Macs - They'll all work on Intel Macs.

Not strictly true, in fact Apple's relationship with Adobe isn't generally that great. In the studio we can't print from any machine running InDesign CS3 or CS4. The initial reaction is that this isn't an issue that will be resolved by Adobe.

Thats interesting Andrew, what sort of machine are you printing to? Office printer or something bigger?
-
It's to our big Olivetti laser printer, however the Adobe forums are awash with people experiencing the same, so it would appear the type of printer is irrelevant. As I say, it's only InDesign, and you can work around it by exporting PDFs and printing those via Acrobat/Preview.
-

....That's always been an effective workaround since CS1 and a pretty well established method. PDF is probably a better route and format anyway.

Some of you may find these tips useful: http://www.macworld.com/article/161357/2011/07/how_to_make_lion_more_like_snow_leopard.html
I, for one, will definitely be switching off the Inertia behaviour when Trackpad scrolling.
-
I find the inertia aspect pretty good once you get used to it... it certainly makes browsing long documents and websites quicker.
-
Personally i don't see the point in upgrading the software to then try and make it more like the previous version.
You may as well save yourself £21 and stay on OS X 10.6.8.
Just my tuppence
-
Thanks for that article robin... I've not managed to reduce the size of the font in the sidebar of finder and mail (bugged my since i upgraded)
-
^
Actually, I made a mistake about not liking Inertia - I have it selected in Snow Leopard and like it.
I'm not advocating trying to make a Lion into a Snow Leopard, but just passing on info which some folks may find useful/helpful, or not.

I was just commenting in general RR

Many of the more hardcore Logic Studio users (mostly music professionals depending on it for their income) won't upgrade any new OS until absolutely necessary. But many of those guys have a Mac solely dedicated to running the music in the studio and no other Applications, not even email.
