Title: Refurbed wheels back from S.E.M.
Post by: Andy_GTI on March 02, 2011, 10:23:35 pm
Hi all, just got my wheel back from S.E.M. in Sunderland, and I have to say theyve done a cracking job.

The wheels are pretty much back to original condition, albeit with black instead of grey inserts.

Obviously no guarantee was given that the white worm will stay away so it will be interesting to see how long they last. I may well just have them powdercoated next time but time will tell.

If anyone can give me some tips on preventing the dreaded 'White Worm' for as long as possible I would really appreciate it as im scared of what products I can and can't use!

Took the car straight up to Kielder Water  from Sunderland for good blast out so the cars in a bit of state!

Looking nice,
Only way I know of to stop the whiteworm is to not ever drive the car.
Think I want some Monzas again after seeing all of these!

Andy

Not at all mate I was charged £288 including the VAT and they need the wheels for 3-4 days. I just took the car in and they provided me with a spare set of alloys for the duration.

yeah top job, had mine done the same at sem last year and no sign of whiteworm coming back.  Price has gone up a little since last year though.

.
Andy, I'll call Autoglym tomorrow and ask about their Custom Wheel Cleaner on lacquered diamond-cut and report here what they say. It's really just a cleaner though and a sealant is what will protect.

....Poorboys has a good reputation.

@ Andy:

The not-so-new Autoglym kit can be used safely on Monza diamond-cut lacquered alloys BUT only provided that the seal is not broken. AG say that Ford offer the most durable wheels with this finish because the lacquer is thicker.

Written on the box is a Sodium Hydrochloride warning but Autoglym tell me that this is only because packaging regulations require it. All cleaning solutions need an active agent and they assure me that it is safe on alloys.

Hoping this helps  :happy2:

i use bilberry to clean and collinite 476 to seal, the crap just runs off them :happy2:

Same here I just add cg sealant in-between the collinite and the bilberry.  Works a treat.

This is definately the best method I have used. Although Collinite can absorb the brake dust specs due to the wax content. Jetseal 109 is apparently better in this respect but does not share the same durability as 476.

Good old warm water &  a good quality shampoo & regular washing is a great help to stop the build up of crap/brake dust etc.

Bilberry is good but it's at the opposite end of the pH spectrum and is very alkali. Some interpret this as being as bad as very acidic. I, however, will continue to use it.

Interesting thread this thanks for posting Andy, i wish we had an SEM here in Spain as mine need doing! I took my (beloved) Audi 90 Quattro there back in 1997 and it was £45 per wheel i think and they did a TOP, TOP, job. The Audi had those split rim Speedlines with a row of 32 studs around the inside which must have been an absolute nightmare to do and they had them back to factory spec within 2 days, excellent work!

Had mine done recently with the black inserts £85 a wheel so not cheap, but i am down south, look great on a black car. Already had a couple of very small stones stuck in the lacker, luckily spotted them before any water got in there. Popped them out with something sharp and very carefully sealed the holes with a artist paint brust and the lacker you get with the VW touch up paint. Seems to have done the trick so far, only time will tell on the dreaded white worm, fingers crossed.
