Hi, I thought that an immobiliser is when you have a metal fob which you hold against a sensor in your car and then you are able to drive. In the MK5 I obviously dont do this so I called my insurance company to tell them to deselect the option of the car having an immobiliser. However the guy told me that past 2001 most cars have one and the MK5 is likely to have one also. Is this the case? If so how do modern immobilisers work? Thanks for any help

I think the key fob has a transponder in it that pairs with the immobiliser to allow the car to start.

your car does have an Immobiliser
Moden immobilisers use transponder chips. when in a certan distance usually the steering coloum area the immobiliser is deactivated.

There is a chip in the key and then there is a ring that goes around the ignition barrel so when you put the key in the ignition the ring pics the signal up from the key and so let's the car start. That's the short version :happy2: I can't say for sure but I think all manufactures will do this now. As it means cars can't be stolen without the keys no hotwireing goes on in new cars.

Even my 1999 fiesta had an immobiliser built in.

You could learn a hell of a lot by reading your manual. One evenings reading could have saved you a week on the internet so far. :rolleye:
