Hi everyone,
Its great to join you all, i have had a quick look around and like what i see. I hope everyone is as nice as they are on the r32oc.
I think a lot of you have been through this but i am wondering which mk5 to get, the r32 or ed30.
I previously had a type r which i regret selling ¬

and i now have an astra 1.9 cdti (150) ex pack which i regret buying  dont get me wrong it's a great car and looks sweet but no vtec or grunt makes me sad.

You can guess what colour my mk5 will be  tornado red all the way (IMO of course)
Hope it's a good intro for you guys.
I will be greatful for your help with deciding which mk5 to go for, even though i think i know what there is to know :happy2:
-
ED30...cheaper to tax, cheaper to fuel, cheaper to insure and easier to tune :D
Thats what swung me anyhow lol
-
wow that is a hole in one lol
My idea was to end up with an ed30 anyway but i was thinking if i should get an r32 first, i love the sound and the 4wd. My only issue with the ed30 apart from the fwd is that its really hard to find one with leathers.
With fuel prices going daft i think a lot of people will be selling up their r32's
thanks alexperkins, yours ed30 looks bloody sexy :happy2:
-
the sound and the 4wd is good ill give you that, but I couldnt justify £400 a year road tax and even higher fuel bills!
You wont find an ED30 with full leathers...it was never an option. They all have heated half leather with the funky interlagos cloth - best of both worlds
Cheers mate ;) Its a lovely motor
-
Having had all three cars... (r32, type-r and now ED30) I would like to say the type-r doesn't compare in terms of build quality, handling or pace of the VW's... in fact I hated my type R for the couple of weeks I cared to own it...
The R32 is gorgeous car, sounds awesome and the 4wd traction is brilliant. But it's a heavy car and you can tell in the corners and fuel wise, I would on average get 29-30 on my 25mile work run...
The Ed30 feels spritelier, feels just as quick if not quicker, but getting the power down takes some getting used too... getting average of about 36mpg at mo... sounds nice when boosting... and had the added bonus of beeing easier to tune...
It's a tough one between the two... I wish I never sold my R32 if that tells you something... but am very pleased with the ED30 but look forward to getting a remap...
Mk5 R32 with the ED30 engine but with V6 roar( or an R32 Turbo) would be my perfect choice...
-
noise grunt and grip go for the .:R :innocent:
tuning capabilities go for a gti (ED30 for the win) :happy2:
i wouldnt count on .:R32 owners selling because a rise in fuel prices though, we're already penalised heavily on road tax, insurance and fuel anyway so a few pence more is a drop in the ocean
welcome on board :drinking:
-
I bought the R for the noise mostly and the extra traction as an aside (I live on a hill and 2WD cars won't go up it in snow). Doesn't matter how many intakes, Millteks and remaps you put on a GTI it will never sound as good as a standard R32. There is a sense of occasion in an R that I never got from driving other Golfs. The instant, naturally aspirated oomph with no waiting for turbos or VVT to kick in is a price worth paying for at the pumps.
And at VED renewal time.
And at insurance renewal time!
-
Hello and welcome.
I've got a normal GTi so can't offer you any advice in the Ed30 vs R32 debate. I do like a nice fry up in Millhouses Park caff though!
-
Welcome! :happy2:
-
Welcome

Thanks for the welcome guys,
I think im sliding towards the r
the sound and the 4wd is good ill give you that, but I couldnt justify £400 a year road tax and even higher fuel bills!
You wont find an ED30 with full leathers...it was never an option.
^Damn no leathers, i will have to invest in some if i get the ed30. I think the only issue with the r is running cost, otherwise i love it in everyway.
Having had all three cars... (r32, type-r and now ED30) I would like to say the type-r doesn't compare in terms of build quality, handling or pace of the VW's... in fact I hated my type R for the couple of weeks I cared to own it...
It's a tough one between the two... I wish I never sold my R32 if that tells you something...
^Your right about the type r not having as good build quality but handling and pace it defo had. Its more of a toy
That last comment tells me a lot, thanks :happy2:
i wouldnt count on .:R32 owners selling because a rise in fuel prices though, we're already penalised heavily on road tax, insurance and fuel anyway so a few pence more is a drop in the ocean
^True, but i was in a debate about rising fuel cost on the r32oc and most of them said when fuel price hits £1.50 they will be selling, i guess everyone has there own limits. :drinking:
Doesn't matter how many intakes, Millteks and remaps you put on a GTI it will never sound as good as a standard R32.
^This is the comment that swung me towards the r, soooooooo true
I do like a nice fry up in Millhouses Park caff though!
^Hmmmmmmmmmmm is that a fellow sheffield being
---------------------------------------------------------------------
I have driven an r32 but not an ed30, just by looking the r looks more planted, dont ask where i got that idea it just does lol
before i plunge at 1 though, i will be taking both for a test drive.
Thanks again guys, more comments welcome :popcornsoda:

As already said, V6 on Milltek is a sound to die for! But the GTI is far more tactile to drive and cheaper to own (unless you have a carbonfibre fetish!).
-
agreed, the V6 sound is epic  but i am biased!
theres absolutely nothing wrong with a sorted GTI though! if i didnt own an .:R i would be in one for sure (MK5 not MK6)
and as far as red ones go, RedRobins is my favourite on here
but if i was owning one... it would look a little more like this:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm4.static.flickr.com%2F3406%2F3489067641_e15b9949ff_b.jpg&hash=35b1e209ac2df9e84ebf2974a158649fb20fac58)

....I'm very flattered :drinking:
I also much prefer the Mk5 to the Mk6 and it's not because I've got one. SteveP's is the best modded Mk6 I've seen so far though.
That red one with the black roof you posted is also one of my favourites. In fact I think it was me who first posted pics of it here. If I hadn't already got the carbon nose I might have vinyl'd the same parts.
-
My days, now i'm sliding towards the ed30 for the amount that can be done to it.
That pic with the r32 and gti is like having your two favourite models stood together
:happy2:
-
Went from a standard GTI to an ED30 & best choice i could have made. :happy2:
-
Went from a standard GTI to an ED30 & best choice i could have made. :happy2:
Haha cool i think i could have made that choice on my own. Gti or r though is a tough one for me.
I sold my astra yesterday but im gonna hold back untill the tax year to see where fuel prices have got, then i think it will help me decide.
If prices are close to 1.50 i might consider the r but if its any higher, ed30 and big tuning bug it is
-
^^^^
Yes, the downside of the .:R is potentially the fuel and of course the wretched 'road' tax but the gains from tuning are only slight (unless you go bonkers with a turbo or supercharger!) and so less money is spent modding unless cosmetic. So it's swings and roundabouts. It is a difficult decision, especially as the sound of that V6 on Millteks is very seductive.
-
If i was to get the r i wouldn't go bonkers with a turbo or charger because they cost almost as much as the car, thats only entry level :stupid:
I would be happy with breathing mods and concentrate more on the appearance. Like you say redrobin the gains are very slight, i think it cost around 2k+ just to get to 300bhp which is an extra 50hp................ :booty:to that
If i got an ed30 then i would go as far as my wallet would take me
the sound of that V6 on Millteks is very seductive.
^ soooooooooooo right, thats the only reason the r is in the equation  and the 4wd of course
-

....The '4WD' is useful in some conditions but takes something away from the tactile feel, but a Haldex switch will help a lot - Expensive though at about £700 IIRC but I'd say deffo worth it if you're keeping the car for a while.
It's strange how just the sound of an exhaust can influence us. However, sound is vibration waves is motivational vibes! It's why we like our favourite music.... It makes us feel good.
-
red r32 wins evertime for me
-
^ I Think it wins to but iv not driven the ed30 yet so I dont know what I could be missing.
I have to weigh up the pros n cons after driving both and see if i can live without the v6 soundtrack
-
You need a road test in an Ediion 30 with a aftermarket exhaust. you will be able to live without the soundtrack of the R.Its not bad for a turbo charged 4 pot :happy2:

Not bad for a 4 pot but nowhere near as good as the 6 pot. :fighting: :fighting:

....You're not wrong, Ian
It's always wise to enjoy what you've got. You're going to miss the sound of your V6.
-
if it wasnt for the road tax :fighting: i would of bought an R32,but then again
if it wasn't for road tax :fighting: they wouldn't be as cheap as they are

There says the man selling his 6 pot for a 4 pot turbo :innocent: :signLOL:
Of course the 6 sounds glorious, but the 2.0t isn't bad :rolleye:

You missed the step where I sold the 4 pot turbo for the 6
For those of you that are struggling to decide.
-
This was the vid that helped me decide:
-
when you own r32 just shows you got money to throw about.
He even left the camera behind on the floor :signLOL:
-
^ hahahaha yea he left his camera in the middle of the road, dont think i would do that so does that mean i should get the ed30.
Road tax doesn't really bother me. I dont mind paying lump sums its just the fuel that concerns me as i drive a lot, if fuel is around the 1.50 mark after the tax year i might shoot myself in the foot and just go for it. I remember driving the v6 and falling instantly in love
-
If it goes up to £2 litre as reported by sky that's £100 a tank :scared:
-
This was the vid that helped me decide:
I nice sound of a non res milltek on that R. Come on simon, about time you bought a milly aswell
-
Going for some different sounds instead. I will be upgrading the speakers, not the exhaust! Definitely need the bigger tailpipes, though, as the standard ones are rather anorexic.
-

Shame its a Res Milly as per the title. :P
-
That car looks good from the side, too, as it has 19" CH's on it.

Personally speaking I think the Res-Milly sat in my garage would suit your car a treat Simon. :innocent:
-
You took it off then, Ian? Tempting as it is, I'm having some suspension mods done this month, so I can't afford it!
-
I can hold it for you, the exhaust that is. :chicken:
-
Shall have to see if there's any OT going at work! Doing an extra weekend at the end of March that could liberate me an extra 500 nicker or so. Hmmm, speakers or zorst...??
I was planning to save for a Capristo, after going in Tim Lau's R, but they've stopped making it apparently. (I know about the RR day!)
-

£500 gets you exhaust and EVOMS
-
Ooh, you little minx!
To be honest, I wouldn't be able to fit a zorst until July, as I'm with More Than and they just bin you if you mod your car. I've not mentioned my wheels to them! :surprised:
-

In theory you you shouldn't be affected as it's only cosmetic
-
That's why I'm only doing invisi-mods at the mo'. Uprated ARBs and speakers fit into this category in my book!
Did you declare the Milly and did it add to the premium?
-
Yes I declared it and the EVOMS.
I was/am with Chris Knott and asked for it from the start so not sure.
They are only concerned on bhp gain but even the likes of Admiral would be ok with it.
-
Good old CK. Nice cheap premium for your first year and then they double it for the next!

capristo? :surprised:
you know how much they cost right?
buy hedges milly... or if he's sold it by the time youre ready... buy mine :jumpmove:
-
They did cost £2400 or so, depending on the exchange rate, but are now unavailable. Because they have control valves they're quieter than standard when pootling, but sound like a race car at full chat.
-
I heard Tim's at Surrey RR last year. It didn't sound 4.8 times better than mine with the Milly.
-
But it's got a plipper! :signLOL:

It can affect your insurance because fresh wheels attract tw*t theifs. They do anything not to pay you out
simonp your right that car does have bbs ch's and it looks sexy, he's on the r32oc called davefish
-
.
Have you tried Greenlight for insurance, Simon? - They're very mod friendly. It's always best to declare everything imo.
-
so.... you any closer to knowing what you want yet? :popcornsoda:
or can we pollute your brain some more?

I'll give the Milly a polish at the weekend and put some pics up. That should seal the deal.

HAHAHAHAHAHA sorry very cherry I need more. Just as im about to decide, someone pollutes me with something sexual from the ed30 or r.
That milly should make a crisis in my pant lol
I think someone said sky reported that petrol prices will be going to approx £2.00 a litre  not long till we find out now but keep filling my head to tightly seal the deal lol

If it goes up to £2 litre as reported by sky that's £100 a tank :scared:

I know everything should be declared, but if I tell my current insurer they'll probably cancel the policy. That costs money and I can't be arsed with all that, so I'll just move on, when it runs out in June, to someone more mod friendly where I can become an honest citizen again!

yeah, but its not like anything is getting any better out there :scared:
-
^^^^
I've been roaming this planet for long enough to know that nothing ever gets any better out there.... That's why I'm an optimist
-
Things are soo bad, but when its gets worse the bad then seems good.
for example we pay around 1.30 for fuel now which is bad, but when were paying 2.00 the bad 1.30 seems a bargain. Its called just bending over and tacking it.
:worthless:
lets protest ^ pretend the signs above say, CHEAPER FUEL FOR THE UK
although it never works
-
The annoying thing is, the price would go to £2 a litre,And even if the libya problems got sorted, the government wouldn't be
quick to bring its price to what it should be,if at all changing it back.
They would just assume we have all accepted the price of fuel for what it is ! :fighting:

so true, the price will never come down. Although shell have reduced there v power 3p for a little while which is a huge shock.
will fuel prices be going up on the 1st of april exactly
