Title: standard head unit

this may seem strange but i have a standard cd head unit in my 04 gt tdi. Is has he ipod lead connected in the glove box but can't seem to work out how to use it? I.e i press play on the ipod but my head unit has no mode/function button to select it. Any ideas please? Cheers ppl
