Title: LED number plate bulbs..
Post by: jonnyc on February 26, 2009, 06:56:40 pm
Hey..

This is the thread that you need to put your name down to register your interest in the potential group buy.

Ill get some pics up tomorrow, but basically the LED's are 6000k xenon colour, have a resistor integral with the bulb and look great.. Mine have been on a day or so now and I love them!

Anyways get your names down..

Add your name to the list and repost the list.. (if that makes sense)

Thanks

Jonny

How much are they? ecs tuning has them for £50 plus shipping but they are on back order..

Their are similar ones on ebay which are around £30, my friend has some on his car and are very bright just like those on the lexus and bmw, you also get various fixings so will fit the golf easily.

Those LED's you have pictured are the same as what I have.. I ran them for half an hour and then took them out and touched the heatsink (as I was also concerned about the heat)

They were hot but I mean, not hot enough that you couldn't hold your finger on them for 2 or 3 seconds.. I think there great, certainly good quality etc..

Waiting for a response but hopefully we should be able to get them sorted..

the normal number plate bulbs get hot, if your car is dirty, and you drive it around with your lights on you will see the shadow on your bumper were the bulbs are placed underneath, it gives a clear outline of overheated bulbs..

i think this might of chaged on the 2006+ gtis i dunno.

but with an l.e.d guess it coudl get even worse  :surprised:

The LED's are cooler than the standard bulbs on mine.. Just from touching them though..

Will these bulbs fit underneath the mirrors if you have the puddle lamp illumination option???

Saw an Audi A6 with bright blue puddle illumination at it looked pretty 8)

No, the puddle lamp illumination are 501 W5W bulbs, the same as the sidelight bulbs.

what brand are they?

taken from a MK5 forum:

with the Ziza set you need to be careful how you put them in etc. Ive already gone through 3 sets of Ziza lic plate bulbs. Those bulbs run super hot. Ive melted my housing with the 2nd set, and ECS gave me another set. Hopefully these will hold out. The first set burned out in 2 weeks.. 2nd set last about a month. Even with the resistor on it, it still burns hot.

My work is famous!

To try and settle your nerves on the heat debate.
I've been out for about 45 mins in the car and decided to adjust the bulbs a little to tone down the brighness and they're warm, but not blistering if that makes sense.  No hotter than taking out a bulb after it's on for 45 mins  :happy2:

My work is famous!

To try and settle your nerves on the heat debate.
I've been out for about 45 mins in the car and decided to adjust the bulbs a little to tone down the brighness and they're warm, but not blistering if that makes sense.  No hotter than taking out a bulb after it's on for 45 mins  :happy2:

Oh god! Not another forum lol..

Good to see you on here mate.. You maybe in a Golf soon!!

Same here, as good as they look, they still look a bit like you have your fog lights on.

Which is basically the biggest thing that winds me up on the roads today! Followed closely by people driving too close behind..

So anyways, if I had them then it would no longer allow me to flash every numb nut with there sidelights and fogs turned on instead of there headlights..

I'm interested in what bulbs you sell, and what colour light they give out. I want some new sidelight bulbs! (Puddle lights and sidelights use the same bulbs to anyone that missed my earlier post).

I will check the bulb status as these are the ones you all need

I am trying to see if they will do this lot as one item and hopefully reduce the cost

Front Interior Lights - 2 x W5W 12V5W
Front Interior Lights - 1 x C5W 12V10W (Festoon)
Rear Interior Lights - 3 x W5W 12V5W (some cars only have two here)
Vanity Lights - 2 x C5W 12V10W (Festoon)
Luggage Compartment - K-12V10W
Glove Compartment - 1 x W5W 12V5W
Footwell Lights - 2 x W5W 12V5W

That looks like 10 x W5W 12V5W, 3 x C5W 12V10W, 1 x K-12V10W

....I jumped in early mistakenly thinking they were sidelight bulbs (although it clearly says "number plate bulbs"!! Duh!). Then I realised I decided to leave myself on the list but then more recently have thought it's not a mod worth spending £20+ on. Also if/when they need replacement it could be a hassle getting them, whereas it's really easy getting stock parts from my very friendly VW dealer.

Is changing the interior bulbs something which VCDS is needed for or is it something I could just ask my dealer to do on a next workshop session if I supply the bulbs?

[No wonder my VW dealer loves me  ]

.... You clearly don't know me very well

But, joking apart, I assume from your answer that the swop over to a different type of bulb doesn't throw up the necessity for any adjustments due to such things as resistances or other electrical technicalities which go beyond my knowledge.
Title: Re: LED number plate bulbs..
Post by: vRStu on March 08, 2009, 02:49:21 pm
No you should be fine Robin, don't turn on the ignition while the bulb holder is empty and that should make sure you don't get any bulb failure warnings.

Some of the LED's setup contain the required amount of resistance to deal with the bulb failure device and keep you clear of warnings.

I got a couple of the number plate lamps from Rob last week and had a good chat with him.  The lamps to seem to be nice quality so I have no concerns in that direction.

Specifically which ones are you wanting to change?

....The interior 'downlighter' (aka map readers?) would be favourite and interior light activated by doors opening. I'm not actually aware of any other interior lights.

Exterior wing-mirror downlighters would be a cool touch.

Thanks for your info - Appreciated  :happy2:
Title: Re: LED number plate bulbs..
Post by: vRStu on March 08, 2009, 03:28:05 pm
You simply need to remove the interior light.  This is done by gently prising out the meshed cover part to reveal two torx screws which also need to be removed.  Once you've done that the whole unit will be released and you can access the lamps.
Title: Re: LED number plate bulbs..

Er....I don't know what "torx" screws are!

I'm very friendly with one of my dealer's mechanics, I think I'll ask him to show me outside working hours.

I really am scared of taking my car apart! Silly isn't it! I think I'm worried I won't be able to put it back together again.

I can take the floor mats in and out

:drinking: You're always very helpful and your input appreciated.
