Post by: wigit on March 10, 2011, 12:20:47 pm
big thanks to to brake god DaveB for a colour change to StevePs Porsche set up, can't thank him enough given he'd gone into brake retirement and MrsB is expecting twins, assistance in pad selection has also been appreciated.  :notworthy:

quality of the finish is incredible and i don't think pictures off my compact do them justice, so glad i went for black  :D

Very Nice Andy, just need a fast car to fit them on :chicken:

Nothing wrong with upgrading the brakes no matter what car anyone has, the GTI brakes are ok but uprating them makes perfect sense when 50 or 60 BHP is added.  :driver:

^^ indeeedie, if you have Country roads near by , that gives you the opertunity to use them, not so much for us town folk, where better brakes are less of a must fit :sad1:

Andy knows im only joking, i see him enough in person to know im just messing.

Are there any rules though against a handbag and the countryside :signLOL:

On a serious note, i know bigger brakes are a must, especially in the more rural area's.
When i visited uncle Knobhead a while ago to have my xenons fitted by the kind chap, i was in convoy behind redrobin, and on more then one occasion, robins sudden braking style , nearly made me have several brown trouser moments, and my Eddy nearly writing off Robins rear end :scared: :scared:.

I would have thought that better performing brakes would be a benefit wherever you lived............  Increase the safety factor available.

Accidents can also happen on straight roads, and IMO the Ed 30 brakes with Std HP are shocking!  Never mind what they are like with 40 ish more.

Post by: Saint Steve on March 11, 2011, 06:57:47 pm
If your finding std ed30 brakes bad for city use, then your obviously driving too fast or too close to the car infront :booty:

Ive only on one occasion found them inadequate, and that was tailing Robin down your country roads dave .

Indeed, we have different styles/likes/dislikes, I thought a stage 1 remap transformed the ed30, you thought it ruined it.. we all have different likes/dislikes.

Better to have better brakes than you need rather than need better brakes than you have.

The standard Ed30/GTI brakes are wholly inadequate even on the standard car let alone a mapped one.  :scared:

....My "sudden braking style" means late braking - Slow in and fast out of corners is my preferred style. Plus I know those local twisties.

I wouldn't want folks to think I was more of a hooligan than I am

....Might that not have been because we were in convoy and I didn't know the route and was following the car in front who indicated late?

I usually am in the conscious habit of using my indicator even when changing lane and no other vehicles near me. That 5-flash feature which the GTI has is great.

My driving style reputation is at stake here in this thread it seems.

unfortuantey once you have driven a Golf R or S3 with the larger set up you realise how poor the stock ones are, the issue i have is they are not at all progressive especially when you are in the passensgers seat

....You sound as if you've been on the piss, Andy  - You really shouldn't use the brakes when you're sat in the passenger seat (front or back?) even if your legs are all bendy from enjoying alcohol.

Off topic, me thinks.

But as has been said a few times recently, by quite a few members - 'I was surprised how good the standard Gti was'  The SC mapping was dire, IMO.  Nothing before 3k, then all hell breaks loose, made for a poor performing and ill mannered car.

Ed30 with decent brakes, and LSD made for a cracking really potent car.  Improvements as listed cost £1500 and meant I could use all the horses I had.  Power is nothing without control...............  still had 230 eager ponies!  Hence my belief that It didn't need mapping.

Was it the correct transmission type map sent dave?, My "manual" superchips  map was pants on stage 1 for my dsg car, similar to what your describing? .

just a thought

I've been saying that from the second day I bought my ED30. Kept getting shot down for it too. At anything below 50mph, they're awesome but can be quite scary on the motorway if you have to brake suddenly. Hate that back end twitch.

....Might that not have been because we were in convoy and I didn't know the route and was following the car in front who indicated late?
 Probably. I guess it's an issue with having convoys and trying to work out what the guy in front is doing/where they're going rather than acting as you normally would when on your own.

I usually am in the conscious habit of using my indicator even when changing lane and no other vehicles near me. That 5-flash feature which the GTI has is great.
3-flashes and it's a lane-change indicator.

My driving style reputation is at stake here in this thread it seems.
We all know that despite your age, you probably are a far better driver than most of us. Especially with those expensive driving courses you seem to do.  :driver:
