Title: What to do? Car dilemma
Post by: Nasir on March 10, 2011, 05:28:09 pm
I'm in a good position to buy a better spec car now but I'm confused.

My current car is a Golf Mk5 1.4 FSI which although no GTI, can be a little bit of fun. I would like a better spec SE which comes in 1.6 FSI or 1.9 TDI. The TDI is sort of the preferred choice for economy and torque. But I really do like the petrols and I'm a really big car enthusiast so I don't know whether to switch to the devils juice.

There isn't a huge price difference between the 1.6 and the TDI, probably a few hundred pounds but I only do around 6-700 miles a year. To add to the confusion my car also needs a service and some minor work doing, I figure when I spend a few hundred pounds on it, I may be better off keeping it?

I would like your opinions on what I should do :happy2:

The 1.9 is an ancient engine now and only 105PS. Isn't there a 2.0TDI option?

Thats one way to look at it, but the other is to look at the 1.9 engine as an extremely tunable, reliable and economical engine, parts are cheap, servicing is cheap, not the most refined engine but good low down torque.

Id have the diesel over the 1.6 petrol personally. But if I only did that many miles I would buy something with a v8

Ahh yes should have mentioned, although within my budget I wouldn't get insured on one. Is there anything other than a Golf? Astras are ugly and have a nasty interior, pre-facelift A3s don't appeal, focus - lets not go there.

I like that it's tuneable but obviously insurance would not allow this, otherwise I'd be at your place for a remap  :signLOL:

Oh and a V8 would be very, very nice but again.....insurance.

Leon , Octavia , Ibiza ?

The Leon interior is very ugly, Octavia would be nice if I had a family  :signLOL: and the Ibiza is too small and most the ones in my price range are the uglier older shape. Many thanks for the suggestions though  :happy2:

I'd have the 1.9 TDI over the newer 2.0 TDI version.  More economical and they are absolutely bombproof.  Maybe not as smooth admittedly but a good reliable lump nevertheless.

I'm leaning towards the 1.9 TDI now, it just depends what comes up I guess.

I'd love to but I couldn't get insured, believe me a Mk5 GTI is a dream car.

What about a limited milage insurance policy?

I'd love to do so little miles a year, would have something with a v6 or v8 in it

I've looked into that, it's ridiculous even on a 1.6. Sods law but by the time I start doing more mileage and can get insured on a big car,  I'll need a small petrol or diesel.

Ahhh see ur fooled till you get some ncb behind you. One you have 1yrs ncb and you're 21 you will be able to insure a gti pretty much hassle free.

Don't know you're budget, but for some reasons insurance companies think the new Ibiza Cupra is a insurance group 4 car so insurance is cheap on those for what you are getting. Loads of 18/19 years olds got em because of this!

I know mate, my budget is around 7-7.5k. I don't think an Ibiza cupra is in my price range.

my advice would be to save that money and just buy a junker, run it for a year get the ncb you need and then get the car you really want!
