For those who haven't seen the news this morning..
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-pacific-12709598 :surprised:
Latest reports suggest that the travelling Pacific Tsunami is higher than some Pacific Islands.. :surprised: I fear the news will get a lot worse over the next few hours.. :sad1
-
i know looks really bad!! have you seen the helicopter videos of the tsunami :surprised: its just wiping everything out in its path.
-
Scary stuff mate.. :scared: The oil refinery going up was pretty mental too, especially when each tank of LPG let go.. :surprised:
-
and they will blame it all on pollution
-
That footage is shocking especially when you see people driving away with water hitting them
-
that was scary footage.
Also there was a nuclear reactor in Japan that was on fire as well :scared: :scared:
-
and they will blame it all on pollution
O doubt it lol
-
Just watching the news coverage :surprised:
Shocking stuff, seems the world is self destructing :scared:
-
just as nostradamus predicted.

just as nostradamus predicted.
Really ?, though he went on about a comet in 2012 ? (or should i say this is how people are adapting his words )
-
.
A major disaster for human life but just a day in the life of planet earth. Enormous power with enormous consequences. Suffering beyond words for some and reminds us of how very lucky most of us are in this neck of the woods.

So true
It really is a horrible sight watching those videos on the news. Very very scary. Those poor people.
It almost seems unreal. Like it's just a clip from a movie

A blessing of sorts people weren't fast asleep in their beds

Most of his predictions are cryptic and its the way they are interpreted that results in all these wild predictions. However he did say that natural disasters would increase though 2010, 2011 and there would be an uprising in the middle east in 2011 in the countries surrounding Mesopotamia (iraq)
The mayan calender ends in 2012, where once every 25800 years the planets and sun of our solar systems align with the centre of the milky way galaxy i believe. Its the 'winter Solstice day' on 21st Dec 2012.
Alot of people believe there will be cataclysmic events at this point. This is because the moon will at its closest point to the earth whilst the gravitational effects of the sun and milky way will be at their peak.
People and many scientists believe the moons gravitational pull is responsible for earth quakes etc due to its gravitational pull. For instance at the moment the moon is extremely close to the earth compared to normal. with today being its closest for a very long time, and we have just had this huge earth quake and tsunami.
Statisticians have found that when the moons orbit is inclined around the southern hemisphere there are more frequent earth quakes than when the moon is orbiting the northern hemisphere, and vice versa.
However you cant ignore the fact that Japan is also on the edge of 3 Teutonic plates (the Eurasian, Pacific and Philippine plates) and that geological shifts in the earths crusts cause earth quakes, volcanoes etc.
I'm a geek and love all this stuff :ashamed:
i don't really believe anything. ultimately the Mayan Calender begins and ends at the alignment of the galaxy, so whilst it may end in 2012, people are speculating but have no idea what will happen. Ultimately the Mayan Calender just restarts at day 1,1year

Some horrific footage, and zero warning for the locals of the impendinig Tsunami. They would have been fully aware of the earth quake, but the initial speed of the tsunami and with it only being 85miles out @ sea there would have been little time to get to high ground. I suspect there is going to be an horrifically high fatality rate.
My 2 sisters and father are in new south wales, in australia, that are on alert for potential threat of tsunami. although when it hit Hawaii the swell was only around 2meters so hopefully it will have dissipated by the time it hits australia. they are still not recovered from the floods
-
Really shocking I feel for the people of Japan, and anybody this event or any other affects.
Its not human life but the show of power when hundreds of cars and lorries all being washed away, I guess, from a car storage depot was shocking.
Houses etc etc.
I think the Nuclear Power Station is under control now.
I read or heard that at one point the Tsunami was travelling at 500mph! Yes 500mph a 10 metre wave!
Very sad for the loss of life :sad1:
-
500mph at the epicentre, but the energy dissipates over distance.
You can see in the vids that its no where near 500mph as it approaches the shore, but with that mass of water hitting the town, at say 50-100mph its catastrophic anyway
-
Its just got a whole lot worse over there, just watching the 10 oclock news and they reckon Radiation is getting out from the reactor they couldn't cool. :chicken: :scared: :scared: :scared:
-
just saw that on ITV . the radiation wasnt leaking, it was actually vented off on purpose from what i gather :surprised. The cooling system went down so they had to vent off steam, that potentially had radiation. Thats bad, however the alternative is a melt down which really would be bad considering the situation there at the moment

Note on this, particularly the section in bold:

From Dr James Garvin, chief scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center:
"the combination of the moon being at its closest to Earth in its orbit, and being in its 'full moon' configuration (relative to the Earth and sun), should not affect the internal energy balance of the Earth since there are lunar tides every day. The Earth has stored a tremendous amount of internal energy within its thin outer shell or crust, and the small differences in the tidal forces exerted by the moon (and sun) are not enough to fundamentally overcome the much larger forces within the planet due to convection (and other aspects of the internal energy balance that drives plate tectonics)."
http://www.nasa.gov/topics/moonmars/features/supermoon.html
I realise you qualify the statement with your lack of belief, but please, let's spread as little misinformation around as possible.
-
behave. I was merely pointing out why alot of theorists believe this is all linked to the mayan calender and also explaining where some people believe it correlates with nostradamus's predictions etc. I for one dont think its anything todo with the mayan calender. and in fact its believe its more related to the geological location of japan.
Its something i find interesting, especially both sides of the argument.
Next time ill make sure i ask for your permission first :indifferent:

Just watching it now, quite scary, not for us not being selfish just scary for the Japanese.
Good to see the people, emergency services all coming together and getting on with it to help and help themselves.
Time to grieve in the future.
One of my dreams was/is to go to Japan I think it will be now one of my number ones to achieve before I die!

....The Japanese people are usually very organised in most of what they do and so I'm sure this will help.
My music co-producer and close friend Steve is due to tour Japan in the summer - His wife is extremely concerned about him going and I don't think it's about screaming Japanese teenage girl fans! My daughter studied Japanese at school and at one time thought of going out there. Wrong place at the wrong time. I'm not sure I want to watch the news and all the carnage.
-
Cryptic !!, have you ever read what he has written yourself?, or other peoples wild translations of his ramblings ?, most things that he supposedly predicted are a bit like reading Russel grants Stars and making them fit in with whatever you want and most of if not all of it being utter rubbish  :P

year cryptic is an understatement
more tsunami warnings issued by japan today :surprised:
-
Anyway on a serious note I hope that casualties are kept to a minimum and people over there are as safe as possible.

No offence intended Sy...

That whirlpool was rather scary.
More scary is the explosion at the nuclear plant. Doesn't seem like the containment is breached at this time and that it was a hydrogen explosion of some kind; I guess the water pipes for the coolant have been damaged severely as apparently they're looking at pumping sea water through the reactor in question (number 1) to cool it. That's quite a desperate measure though.
-
I've got relatives in Japan and thankfully they're all safe if not a little rattled. This is a disaster of epic proportions that even the well drilled and organised Japanese will need a lot of help sorting out. Some of the footage especially the tsunami and the explosions are terrifying.
-
I was half asleep when this was shown first.
I honestly thought it was was a clip from a new movie
It just shows how fragile life is
-
radiation has been found on peoples cloaths ans skin, reactor 3 may explode as they cannot cool it. :scared:

One thing I've noticed about all of this is the resolve of the Japanese people, they aren't all hysterically running around and whining as often happens in disasters.
Going to get much worse once the hardship sets in.
I think if the tables were turned GB wouldn't survive or cope with a similar incident.

....I've noticed this too. Or rather it's how I have expected the Japanese to generally behave - It's part of their character and has shown itself this way throughout their history. They are a much more highly organised race.

I don't agree. Push comes to shove and you will be amazed of what we as a nation are capable of.

I doubt that.
If our country mean't so much to us we wouldn't give it away freely to all and sundry that turn up at the gates or get bent over by the Politicians.
-
we'd probably raid the shops and kill the priminister.........or is that just me  :chicken:

....No, just realistic.
On a very local neighbourly level I think that generally the English would be as great as anyone else in these circumstances but on an overall organisational level they can't even deal with heavy snowfalls!
-
we wouldnt be anygood. nanny state, full of retards. We'd be horrific in that situation
-
People who have lived in england or other developed countries take things for granted.....England would be up there with the best, you guys are going on as if we are a third world country :stupid:

Its not looking good for those poor bugger's over their. Radiation levels going up now. :sad1:
-
Yep, seems they've had another explosion.

Oh no!
Too late for this one but why build a nuclear plant near the coast of a country which has a long history of earthquakes and even tsunami's?

i think thats a valid point RR. We mentioned this in work today. Why not another 5 miles inland? they did have a break water installed across the sea front but thats no use with that mass of water coming in land.
ref the plant their back up systems were allegedly meticulously designed and accepted as being fully up to the job hence why they were aloud to install the plants. The generators which stopped working after the tsunamis worked as expected as they were protected from the Tsunami. however they forgot to protect the Generator fuel tanks which were washed away.
small error with drastic consequences.
-
It does make one wonder, but they build them on the coast in most countries my guess is to limit it being near the centre of populated areas. I find it strange that all the reactors are suffering different faults. Surely this points to fundemental problems that were there only triggered by the wave. :surprised:
-
The reactors survived the earthquake rather well. But it was the tsunami that caused the trouble, flooding the six backups generators which is what (I understand) led to the resultant coolant failure (or the generator fuel tanks as you say Sy).
I don't think anyone expected a catastrophe of this magnitude. I understand that previous studies conducted (admittedly by the nuclear company TEPCO) determined that the maximum magnitude of an earthquake along those three faultlines was going to be 7.9. As it's a logarithmic scale an earthquake of magnitude 9.0 is orders of magnitude more powerful than the earlier estimation. Presumably no one expected a tsunami of such proportions as well.
-
Radiation levels surrounding hte plant are now 4 times that of earlier this morning. They also believe one of the reactors has damage to the bottom of one of the reactors.
The fuel tank issue was mentioned by some atomic Scientist who has worked at the plant who did an interview on the news earlier today.
-
I live next vertually next door to two nuclear powerstation, hope we dont have any earthquakes :scared:
Heysham 1 and 2 :scared:

Aha. Slowly the picture becomes complete.
-
luckily we dont have any major fault lines near us, its the californians that need to be on the cautious side their coastline runs along the 'ring of the fire' like japan and they also have two nuclear power stations slap bang on the coast - which can apparently withstand an earthquake of 7.7 magnitude, not enough to survive what happened last friday.. might reconsider my holiday plans for this summer
-
People who have lived in england or other developed countries take things for granted.....England would be up there with the best, you guys are going on as if we are a third world country :stupid:
Not at all. I have lived in both China and Pakistan so do understand a bit about other cultures.
Ours is not a third world country by any means just becoming 3rd rate thanks to nanny state, politically correct nonsense. Bring all our troops back home and repel the boarders to our own country before we go picking fights in far off countries. :fighting: :fighting:
-
with regards to Radiation levels, as of today, i dont think there is much to worry about at the moment.
everyones saying its "10 times normal". Well, yes it might be but quantify normal and dangerous. No one one the news knows, theyre just scare mongering.
We are taking of levels of radiation being at around 0.9 sieverts per hour (highest recorded so far away from power plant)
To put that into perspective, you would receive about 50 microsieverts when having a chest xray. I would take a years worth of exposure to 100 microsieverts to cause cancer, 6000 microsieverts would probably kill you in a matter of weeks.
At the Nuclear power station...the levels are about 40 microsieverts.
Whilst im not saying the situation (at the moment) isnt a bad one, of course it is, its not as drastic as the world wants you to thing
-
From BBC:
"...radiation dosages of up to 400 millisieverts per hour were recorded at the site."
-
holy moly. a lot has changed since i was catching up at 10AM!
I heard there was a very short spike this morning, and has not settled down. do you know if this is the "spike" or more recent developments?
-
I think it was a transient but now they're worried that the containment in reactor no. 2 has failed :scared:
30km exclusion zone now.
-
holy moly? containment failing is the worst outcome really.
-

Poverty, I completely agree with you, we have the knowledge and resolve to get through something like this.
The people who wouldn't want to help themselves i.e. all the chavvy thieving scum, would perish and get no help.
This great country of ours still produces some of the most intelligent and hard working people in the world.
The few people and issues that are splashed around the 'News' Papers is utter bullsh*t if you don't read them or watch utter sh*t like Jeremy Kyle then you realise that there are good people in this country.
Just drive down the M40/M4/M25 people going to work each and every day for very long hours just getting on with it.
I have spoken to two or three people say the same thing to me: If I/we got the chance I would quite happily go to Japan and help them out, I will put that into perspective I haven't been out of my street for 3 days and have only seen a handful of people. Thats quite good resolve!!!
