Try either recoding the remote, or if you have a spare key try it and see!? but if that fails and it still doesnt unlock you could be looking at broken wiring, faulty lock or even faulty door control module!! I'd try the easiest ones first!!!

Does the little red light on the remote flash when you hit the unlock button? If so I think its most likely the door lock module unfortunately. Checking the wiring in the door connector is a good idea, just in case.

Hi
Do you have a spare key try that. if not you could try and change the battery in the key costs 3 pound for the battery. if its not that it might be what the other guys have said. i have an 05 plate as well and the battery had gone

I had it where when you pressed the button you could hear it trying to unlock but it wouldnt unlock the drivers door, but sometimes it would.
It turned out to be a faulty/worn lock motor which vw replaced under warranty.

^^ This. Its happening on mine, intermittent at the moment - works more often than not but on its way out. From my research on it its reasonably common. A new lock unit is about £175 plus fitting. Total of £300 ish from VW but I think its within the scope of DIY if you're brave enough to take the skin off the outside of the door.
