Hey all,
I am about to buy a set of four tyres, i am thinking of Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric.
I used to have eagle f1's gsd3, i hear these are no longer sold and the Asymmetric are the replacement and are better.
I am not keen on the Asymmetric tread pattern as the gsd3 one was great a nice deep V style, the gsd3's were the best tires i have ever used (i owned a nissan 200sx 300bhp)
Anyway i am probably going to buy the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric, does anyone have thoughts or comments pls
I also looked at the 452 Falken, but they dont seem as highly rated
-
GSD3 are toss, they were discontinued for a good reason.
Michelin Pilot Sport 2s or the newer SuperSports if you're feeling flush.
/thread.

i didn't like the PS2s, i just replaced with GY Assys on the front and, 1) they don't pickup every little plib in the road, and 2) i think they are gripping better.. only been on a week, like them so far!!
-
Yes, they've got almost slick levels of sidewall strength, so they're a bit hard on the road. Something to consider maybe if you value comfort or have a low/stiff ride
Grip though, once you're really on it and have got some warmth into them, they'll run away from Assys.
-
I liked the F1 Asymmetrics they had a "good turn in" as you entered a corner. Very good dry grips levels and very sure footed in the wet too. Very progressive on the limit and they gave good feed back (more progressive than the Vredesteins).
But at times they were pants in the colder weather (I know that they are summer tyres). Out of four tyres I did get a side wall puncture in one tyre and on another the side wall got a buldge on the inner face.
After using only Michelins for the best part of 15 years I never had any tyre defects.
The ride was firmer than it is on the Vredesteins Utrac Sessanta that I have on the fronts at the moment and a little noisier too.

The Asymmetric 2 is also out this month.

Michelin Pilot Sport 2s i will do some research on these thanks
Asymmetric 2, now that is good info - thanks
i may go for the Asymmetric 2 just because i have had experiend on the f1 gsd3, ideally dont wantto spend more then £550 fitted
-
I just got 2 new F1 asyms (v1) for 230 fitted. Seem great so far, but ive done all of about 25 miles in the so its early days!
-
im tempted with UNI royal rainsports or Continental sport contact 3. They are apparently excellent as all rounders
-
The F1 Ass. ist good - no doubt. But the ''best''??
I'd say ''no''.
I prefer Conti SC3/SC5P, Pirelli P Zero and Michelin PS2/PSS - depending on
personal preferences such as comfort, dry grip, wet grip and so on.
The PS2 is no longer in production if I'm informed correctly but still one of the
best. The PS2 has been pruduced for a long period and was improved several
times. The GY F1 ass. is discontiuing as well and will be replaced by the "F1
asymmetric 2". GY have introduced it now.
-
the times taking a corner the ps2s under steered, can feel the tyres giving in.. not had that on the GY asys yet. so atm, i rate them over ps2s.
-
another vote for the PSII's here :innocent:
-
I'll be giving the new f1's a try, had conti 2's which were good allrounders, gsd3's which were greet until 50% worn, ps2's which were fine in the summer if a little twitchy but frightening in the winter. Assymetrics v1 were superb but wore quickly, vreds seem equally as good but are lasting longer. I will try v2 f1's next though as I can get them fitted for £75 a corner:)

My dad used to work for Goodyear/Dunlop so gets 40% off tyres with his pension. It went a bit crap 18 months ago and was cheaper to buy online but the latest prices at £75 are much more pleasing. Unfortunately he only gets 6 tyres a year but as the savings are only 10-15 a tyre on his 15's I just pay the difference for him not to use his discount vouchers:)

I used to swear by the Goodyear f1 assymetrics, but after going through about 6, 2 with genuine wear 4 with sidewall snakebite damage I am not convinced by the strength of their sidewalls.

Perhaps I've been unlucky but I am nuts about avoiding potholes and tend to take much care. I've now got ps3's on the rears and 2 f1's on front nearing replacement and YES one has a bump like the above but smaller. :sad1:
-
Are your F1s German made or from elsewhere?
I often wonder when people raise issues with the Assys if there's 2 different versions? As mine were made in Germany, excellent and trouble free.
-
Is there a marking that tells you that the come from Germany? is it one of the many codes on the side wall?
I am sure when this issue was raised before I checked and they were EU, but I cannot recall the details. First lot I sourced from Black Circles, then from eTyres I think....so yes online purchases with local fitting rather than paying kwitsh*t a fortune. If anyone can shed any light on the provenance code I will check and post.
-
Not sure about a code, mine had "Made in Germany" clearly marked on them.
Probably nothing in it, it's just I knocked seven bails out of mine - riding kerbs on track and I live in the sticks where the roads are pothole hell 24/7.
-
thanks for all the comments, i have ordered some assymetrics 2's i will have them on the car on Saturday, i will let you guys know what i think in a few weeks or so

That what happened to one of mine and they were made in Germany, will have to see what the asymmetric 2s are like.
-
Interesting....
I will be putting michellin ps3s on in a few weeks on the front....will generally be a direct comparison. Its probably just how sh*t the roads are around glasgow but I will reserve my opinion until I have completed my own unscientific and largely statistically invalid testing.... :happy2:

no golf clubs at all your wheel looks like on old re mould i had on a mk 2
i have chosen to stick with the brand i know, i will let you know if that was a good choice or not
-
My vote for the Michelin's - worth the money. Go to Costco and save a fortune too.

Alternative recommendation.
Just changed from GY Assy's ( 225-35-19 ) on my S3 to the new Mich Pilot Super Sport...........................absolutely awesome :driver:
Substantially more expensive than the GY's but then thet are the only thing in contact with the road
-
Please tell me more about the SuperSports !!
The Michelin PSS have won a comparison of the German magazine ''SportAuto'' (245/40 R18):

Background:
Had 225-35-19's fitted to S3 (8P) with Giac Stg1, VWR filter and VWR front springs. Previous rubber was GY Assy's in same size. Fitted from new in March 2010 my car has covered 16k miles ( GIAC'd since 1k ) and tyres taken off still had 3.5mm tread ( rotated front to rear at 9k ) They were still performing very well in dry and wet, but due to garage marking my wheels when fitting springs, i got a new set and decided to change tyres at same time.
Now i'm no ringmeister or track hound but hope the following helps the 'average' fast driver. We have some nice roads in the NE of Scotland.
Initial impressions were steering was lighter, ride a tad comfier but a bit noisier. Because of the lightness point i thought that the pressures must be at least where they should be............wrong Once adjusted at next garage to my usual spec ( 35fr & 38rr ) my initial thoughts still stood, bit surprised. So over the weekend i took it easy for first 50 miles or so and then started upping the pace where possible. Now covered 200 miles and i'm getting more impressed each time i jump back in the car.
Weight is slightly lower, but it remains constant throughout the turn. You know exactly what is going on and don't have to 'adjust' at every little change. It sticks to the line. On power corners is where you really notice the difference, these things just grip, grip and grip. Full power exits off roundabouts doesn't even try to slide the car, just railed. Even the other half doesn't go for the grab handle as the car isn't sliding she feels safer. The fact that i'm going faster than normal out of corners is irrelevant, well other than the fact that SHE is now sliding and prising her left cheek off the window
So slow, medium speed corners have the same improvement.
Braking and accelerating are just as bomb proof, but again it's the feel that's so confidence inspiring. When you do get the rear to break, and that only the 'hoof it off' approach and the back slides out VERY progressively, again better than the GY's.
Price wasn't too bad for Michie's at circa £900 fitted. This compares with £650-680 for GY Assy's. so as long as they last me a year i'll be happy.
I'll update next time i see rain and have had chance to see how they cope.
Oh, and they're a nice looking tyre too........if you're into that thing

VWR springs just front?

:happy2:
VWR springs just front?
VWR supply full set, but i just wanted front lowering. The rears sit good already but the nose sits way high and starts to 'bob' about when really pushing on. After these were fitted, the ride and handling improvement was significant, very impressed. Car now sits 3-4mm lower at front compared to rear, as apposed to 20mm higher.

6 weeks of Asymmetric 2's and guess what - one is budging - i have only had the car 8 weeks and the last guy curbed the alloys allot so i have been super careful and not curbed them once.
Long, looks like i will have to buy 2 new tyres as i cant see the tyre shop doing anything for me but i will try on Saturday.
-
:scared:
Hope you get somewhere mate, I didn't even try. I had so many like this, it cost a bloody fortune! That's why I now have mich ps3's all round. Keeping my fingers crossed they are stronger on the sidewall.

I'm sure I read somewhere on here that someone contacted Good Year and they are giving them 45% cost for each tyre
Edit just found it:
I have had trouble with my F1 asym.Just waiting for a reply from Goodyear.2 front tyres have split on the inner and outer wall. Not sure why. Good job I had taken the wheels off to clean them or I might not have been having this conversation :sad1: Tyres only done 7000 miles and it dosen't have a hard life!
I have had a reply from goodyear today. They have give me a 45% credit on each tyre.So can't complain at that :happy2:
-
^^^^ has to be worth a punt. My tyre guy said that it was snakebite due to pot holes. My tyres have long since gone to some pikeys garden by now so for me the damage is done, I just won't buy them again.
