Title: RNS 510 SAT NAV WILL NOT WORK WITH POST CODES
Post by: Roxy99 on March 18, 2011, 03:35:59 pm
Just been directed here from the uk-mc1vs site

I have a 2008 Golf Match TDI 105 with an RNS 510 built in Sat Nav. The sat nav will not accept post codes. The car is still under guarantee and I have taken in to a VW dealer (Carrs at Indian Queens, Cornwall) They state the Sat Nav is not designed to work off post codes and will only accept street names!

I am astounded that a VW Golf under 2 years old has a sat nav that will not work off post codes. I am not convinced the dealer is being truthfull with me.

Any suggestions?

Dave

V6 maps, as yours probably are, will not take full postcode.

V7 mapping will.  Your challenge will be to find V7 mapping.  To run V7 maps you will a certain Software standard, not fully sure but I think SW2680 or higher.

As QD says it will probably only take the first 4 or 5 digits and after that you need to find the street unless you have V7 maps and the requisite firmware.

Have a search on here it's been covered a few times.

Thanks for the updates. How do I tell what software standard I have?

to fully know the firmware you will need to gain access to the secret menu or diagnostic screen which on earlier units needed to be enabled via VCDS/vagcom.  to see if its enabled hold down setup you will see radio diagnostic pop up but keep on holding for another 15-20 seconds see if a further menu appears.  If it does find the option for software and check which map and firmware you are running and post back.

As stated different versions of map have different data V6 maps have upto 4 digit first block postcode and the latest V7 maps can support full UK postcode, there are however firmware changes that will affect the nav system operation including the level of postcode detail the unit will operate.

A simple visual check if you cant get into the secret menu is to look at where the volume adjust bar is or whether or not you have a visulisation of a car when operating the fader and balance.  If you check these points out and post back. you also might find the followign site usefull www.my-gti.com (http://www.my-gti.com) will tell you about firmware versions and features they provide.

One thing to consider before you upgrade any firmware is if your unit is genuine as stolen units can be tampered with to reset the security code this can cause them to break on firmware update.  There is also issues with older cars that the communication with the can gateway can be affected stopping the unit from shutting down correctly and causing battery drain issues.  If your car was built by VW with the nav then neither of these problems should arise.

Out of curiosity, did you retrofit the RNS? I thought the MFD2 was the only factory fit sat nav in the Mk5.

The RNS was an option from 2007-2008 hence alot fo the ED30's and Pirelli's have it fitted as standard, it was also the time when the rev L can gateway was fitted hence why this gateway is suitable with all versions of the RNS firmware it sets the standard for the minimum possible spec that the nav firmware engineers have to maintain functionality with.

Thanks for the info Richn83
I have held down the setup button but nothing comes up apart from radio info. No further menu appears
The digital volume adjust bar appears in the middle of the screen
Re fader and balance - no visulisation of car - just left right/front rear sliders on the screen
The RNS 510 is factory fitted
I have re contacted the dealer and they are going to consult their technical dept. Although I would like to upgrade to V7, I would like to get the initail problem sorted and at least try the V6 version with 4 digit post codes
Regards
Dave

They where introduced in aprox October/ November 2007

As has been mentioned you will be able to put postcodes in but only 4 or 5 digits unless you have V7 Maps. The dealer you went to is talking sh*te and obviously dont know much about the RNS.

Your firmware is at most 1020 as from 1100 onwards the volume bar is at the bottom of the screen. Your Nav is also an A-Revision.

If you have a look in the satnav section there is a stickied tutorial I did on how to update the firmware. The most you can put on is 2760 (or the 1300 if you don have OEM BT and not bothered about voice control).

Once you have 2760 you then just need V7 maps and you will have full 7 Digit postcode search. :happy2:

The saga continues.....

I took the Sat Nav disc back to the VW dealer.
On the front cover of the DVD it says:
Digital Road Map Europe West (V1)
On the back cover it says: For use with RNS 510

The dealer states this  stands for VERSION 1 NOT and not  VERSION 6.
Not sure if they are telling the truth here. The Golf is under 2 years old!
Is/Was there such a thing as VERSION 1?

I had V4 in the glovebox of my 2008 car when I bought it.
I never saw a V1 disc, but it's possible I guess.

If the car is under 2 years old and the nav is factory fit then no way should it have V1 maps.

Have you put 2760 firmware on yet?

Get yourself another 5 posts so you can read PM's and then I might be able to help you out

At some point there would have been a V1 of the maps for the RNS510 and I guess its plausible it didnt have postcode database support.  Either way the dealer seem to be a bit clueless you might be better sourcing your own newer map version update your firmware and you will find the RNS510 a much easier piece of kit to deal with, big speed improvements and much better functionality.

There should always have been post code support. Even my old MFD2 had 4 digit post codes!

I would be more than happy with the older V6 Maps. I can live with a four digit postcode function
Any suggetsions on where I could get a disk - Can they be downloaded?

They can be, but there is probably someone on here that can help you out with a copy of the disc as once its copied to the HDD, you dont need it anymore!
