Title: Fitting RNS 510
Post by: fab5freddy on March 21, 2011, 08:49:48 am
Hi guys & Gals, quick question regarding fitting my new RNS 510. It's a revision c led screen, sw3800, 7.1 maps. Will it need coding? I have the arieal adaptor, is there anything else i'm missing? Also i have the ipod adaptor fitted to my old head unit, can that just be connected to the new unit? Thanks in advance of any help. :happy2: James

EDIT forgot to add i have midline display and no mfsw, so am i right in thinking it should just be a plug & play affair? Or is there more to it. Thanks again

As its a version C, youll need a CAN gateway above a version K (L or higher) else you will get battery drain same as me (the modified firmware to avoid battery drain does not work on version C units)  :happy2: I have just had to order an AD gateway to get around this so it shuts down properly.

If you have a multi function steering wheel, you may need to recode the RNS to work with the steering controls as it doesnt always work first time

The rest is pretty simple as you have the aerial adapter. The only thing you will need to do is move pin 2 to pin 3 on the iPod lead that plugs into the back of the radio or youll get a huge amount of interference.

As shown here, the wire highlighted in blue gets moved http://www.my-gti.com/1336/cd-changer-audio-sound-quality-problems-after-changing-head-unit (http://www.my-gti.com/1336/cd-changer-audio-sound-quality-problems-after-changing-head-unit)

No you just need the 4 digit code,Its pretty much plug and play.
The only prob you will have,If your car is older than 2008 you will need
a different can-bus gateway, this is a small black box that talks to the stereo
through the ecu and tells it to shut down once the car has been turned off for a while.
If you have an old can-bus the stereo doesn't shut down and the HDD keeps running and your
Battery will go flat, the other option to prevent this,is to change the Firmware of the stereo
to an earlier version

Should be alright. Mine was an earlier 07 plate running a K gateway, so you should be an L or an M  :happy2:

Try it and see  :signLOL:

Mine is the same model as yours, open the little storage cupboard next to drivers door, and pull it out
behind there is your can-bus gateway.

No prob mate,i was in the same situation as you few weeks ago.
Bought an RNS and didn't know if i had the right can-bus.

Searched for hours underneath the steering wheel from all the different write ups that pointed me to there
and it turned out it was behind The little cupboard next to the drivers door.

I have the same car as you and they did change the can-bus in 2008,so its the cross over period
so fingers crossed matey that your ok

I changed a Gateway yesterday for Pipston, wasn't too bad to do and thankfully all worked well.

You need to have a good idea of your previous coding when generating the new code for the replacement Gateway.

If you copy the code, and make a note of the label file used from the old one you can manually open LCode found in the RossTech folder, paste in the code and open the correct label file to tell you the options ticked.

With the new one fitted open the coding section and use the other open instance of LCode to cross reference.

You can actually put it higher if you put it through the top vent insert and pop it to the right so it sits just under the grille on top :)

My car is going in to the dealer for a spot of work next week and I was thinking of killing 2 birds with 1 stone and getting them to code the new gateway.

I havent much faith in the dealer for having done 1 before, so how big a job is it for them? Is it straight forward if it is new to them?

I know for installing a new Maxidot unit, it should just be a case of them following the instructions on the VAS programmer.

You would hope they would just duplicate the settings, but there is no guarantee they wont royally screw it up like most dealers seem to.

I'm sure they can do it.  Whether they want to, or whether they get it right is a different matter.
