Cleaned the car over the weekend and whilst giving it a once over with the clay bar I spotted a small scab of rust in the bottom left had corner of the passengers door.
This doesn't seam the most common place and I have read many threads of VW getting out o there 12 year rust warranty. I didn't get the car new and it's an 05 plate, I got it just before xmas so wondering if there is even any point in ringing VW?
If I do what is the best thing to say to tackle the situation?
-
Definately worth a call at worst all they can say is no, but i have just bought mine its a 54 and they are looking into a bit of rust for me they didn't laugh me out of the dealership,
-
Its not the dealer thats the issue, it VW who have to approve the warranty claim and certainly your first port of call mate. Good luck.
-
I have the same issue pal.'mine being on a 56 plate. read all the hastle people on here have had with vw so I just can't be bothered. I'm gonna get a pal to sort it
-
Going to give them a ring tomorrow,w they will no doubt need to know my reg plate, well it's on a private so will need to find out the one it was on before hand!
-
Just give them your chassis number from the bottom of the windscreen.
-
good luck, i am interested to see what they say - esp as i have a 2005 :fighting:
-
Do you have a FVWSH?
I have read that it really helps with rust warranty claims.
-
Nope not a full VW as it got serviced by the garage I bought it of, all ones before that are VW and that was done 2k miles ago.
Anyway either I have low expectations or my local VW service manager was really really nice? Saying that my previous car was a brand new Renault Twingo GT and within 1 month had 3 snapped engine mounts, 1 gearbox mount and a blow box and the customer service was dreadful! Either way...
Rang up about the coilpack and he's got my chassis number, said they usually sent a letter out for recalls but never the less he wants the car to be same so will check this.
Mentioned the rust, he said he is sure this will come under the 8 year paint protection warranty. Asked if it has been chipped so explained it's location and stated it can't get chipped.
I said it was really small and he interrupted me and said as time goes on it will grow and get a lot worse so wants it sorting!
Again he's not sure any of the above is covered yet so is digging around and will call me back today or tomorrow morning!
So far so good! This is VW In Blackpool!

Ive found a few little dots but it seems to have come about from stone chips that have been touched over, so I don't think I'd have a leg to stand on :sad1:
-
Nope anything from a stone chip they will not fix. I had a call back this morning and need to ring the service guy tomorrow explain where the rust is exactly and he will decide if it is a chip-able place, where it is I am 99% certain it started on the inner edge of the door so therefore can't have been chipped?
If it comes out it wasn't a chip he wants me to go down get it assesd and repaired.
-
Some pictures of my rust, yeah it is really small but I don't like things like this on my car!

I still find it unbelievable that a modern car can be so effected by rust in so many different areas. Pretty poor really.

Its crazy really
My old 1.3 genesis from 1990 didnt have a spot of rust on it, and that was going on 20 years. Even my old polo from 2000 didnt have a spot on it, but the GTI being 4 years old does - wheres the logic!
-
Screams panel damage and poor repair job to me because factory fitted galvanized panels cannot rust.
-
I'd agree. If you zoom into one of the photos, it looks like a stone chip tat has removed the paint back to the metal and started to rust to me?
-
sh*t sh*t sh*t :( how much to get that repaired properly?

I've got 2 spots of rust next to the rear passengers side wheel arch. I was quoted £200 to strip the entire passengers underside panel (bit below the protector strip), respray it and with a 2yr warranty from JRM Edinburgh. Nowhere else seemed willing to offer a warranty on rust repairs. Doing the entire underside panel would ensure a spot-on colour match. Thus - won't be any more for your repair, hopefully less.
Because you're rust is exposed (mine is just bubbles), could you get away with painting it with a kurust pen and using touch-up paint over the top? I've just done that to a chip above my windscreen.

When I first found rust on mine everyone was "...a poor repair" or "....its a stone chip" but it just simply wasn't the case, as confirmed by VW body shop themselves. Its just that the MK5 appears to be rust waiting to happen. Go to the dealers, have them examine it and see what they say. If they do it under warranty your laughing but you won't know until you go. Don't bother paying out until you have exhausted the FREE option first bud.

My dealer point blank wont touch it or taken photo's to submit to VWUK, he said it;s started from the outside inwards and not from the inside of the panel so he said VWUK will refuse it straight away. He's not even going to send pictures across to them.
He quoted me £55 for a repair.

Id possibly speak to a different dealer
