Hi all, I can already suspect the response I will get to this but going to ask for comments anyway! :scared:
Just been looking at the VW speaker upgrade kits as there are some going on the bay for relatively little money, these consist of better quality beefier speakers designed to replace the existing 3 way front door speakers and also the frequency filter unit, all are fully OE design even down to the cowlings plug connectors and unfortunately rivet attachment :scared:
So my question has anyone every installed them, or had a listen to someone who has? and secondly interested in how easy people have found it to drill out the old rivets on the bass speakers?
And in case people dont know this is what im talking about:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi614.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ftt227%2Fpartsdepot_uk%2FPartsdepotalbum1%2F1-55.jpg%3Ft%3D1295439401&hash=5bcd930e036297b32ddf45d488caadb25a52c9e1)
30/50W speakers tweeter 4ohm, mid and bass 8ohm, even just looking at the picture the cone material looks alot better than the standard rough card. And I can get hold of them for £80 brand new including the wiring kit would normally be £400 directly from VW although one of the tweeter has minor damage but I might leave them alone.
-
Theres some sets on eBay atm for £89 brand new with no damage
Seems like a reasonable drop in upgrade tbf
Drilling out the old rivets is dead easy :happy2:
-
The £89 ones need the additional wiring kit which seems to include the uprated (I guess it is) cross-over unit since I cant find what the fitting kit fully entails apart from VW charge £130 for it Im a bit dubious about the good condition ones. The tweeters themselves look to be plastic welded into the housing as well so Im a little dubious about removing them!
Have you upgraded the speakers in your car Alex?
Also will a hand drill and hand riveter be man enough for the job? I dont have any power tools (rented accommodation) and I am loathe to spend too much money just to do the speaker install.
-
Ill have to look on ETKA...itll be the the extras section
They just pop out its quite easy
Im looking to do so in the next few months when I have some spare cash. Im perfectly happy with the output of the RNS510, would just like a better dynamic range now i have added a small active sub in the boot :signLOL:
Aye it would be. A good sharp drill bit and firm pressure. A hand riveter is more than adequate - just use good quality rivets.
-
Cheers Alex,
That little bag in the center seems to have rivets in it so hopefully the quality of my rivets wont come into question
Excellent well I reckon im set then, I have the left hand door card lose at the moment anyway after replacing the door controller and mirror housing so that half a job saved as I didn't re attach the poppers until I was sure all was ok. And the drivers side will be coming off once I get hold of the drivers side folding mirror, will probably mean I get an old vs new comparison for a little while!
This is the damage to the tweeter, does anyone know if this will affect sound reproduction in a tweeter? not sure if it is an active component or a cover?

Hm interesting. I'm experiencing quite a lot of crackling through the rear speakers when I play something loud. Do you have a part number for this kit (or what is it called exactly)?

These ones are for the front door on 10 speaker cars, sets on ebay for £89 plus you need the wiring kit that Alex has linked
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-GENUINE-VW-GOLF-MK5-FRONT-SPEAKER-UPGRADE-KIT-/400164269136?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item5d2ba62c50#ht_2301wt_826 (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-GENUINE-VW-GOLF-MK5-FRONT-SPEAKER-UPGRADE-KIT-/400164269136?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item5d2ba62c50#ht_2301wt_826)
There is a rear door specific version which are also up for sale on the same companies site that Alex linked. I dont have any plan to chnage the rears hoping doing the front will provide enough, and only as its relatively in-expensive and genuine.
this is the link to the VW site

Cheers Alex that is alot better than the VW price! Have ordered the speakers and a hand drill some bosch metal drill bits and a hand riveter will see how I get on with that little lot!
Would be interested in people opinion of the damage to the tweeter (I went for the cheap kit :ashamed: as I'm moving house next month and shouldnt be doing this at all!) and especially interested if anyone has done this (unless there crap as Ive now splashed the cash) :signLOL:
-
How do I tell what speakers I have? My sound quality is pretty awesome, and no crackles or nothing with load music and good base? Don't want to buy an upgrade and already have it lol!

use a hoover nozzle to sort that out :happy2:

It depends on a couple of different things Betty, firstly age of the car will determine if you have 10 speaker or 8 speakers MY06 and after was 8 speaker, you should be able to tell by placing your hands over the speaker grills to tell if anything is pushing air behind it.
Beyond that there was also a sound pack option which provided an amp under the passenger seat and uprated speakers so have a look to see if you have anything under the passenger seat and I think someone mentioned that the tweeter cover the sail shaped plastic on the inside of the wing mirror should also say dynaudio if you have the sounds pack.
-
It also depends on whether you have an MFD2 or RNS system as factory fit as these came with 10 speaker options in any case.
Will be interested to read what you have to say about the uprated speakers once fitted Rich. That'll probably decide it for me :signLOL:
-
Well they are due to be with me today which is impressive since I only hit the buy button yesterday afternoon, hopefully the tools will turn up sharpish as well. Will take some better pictures of them tonight side profiles and some of the magnets at the base.
If tools turn up in time I am hoping to get the passenger side done thursday or friday evening so will let you have a review once one side is installed :happy2:
-
Happy days :happy2:
-
Well a big box has just arrived all very tightly wrapped up but from peeping through bubble wrap they look as expected and certainly a good collection of fixings and better quality speaker materials although the magnets aren't the size of aftermarket they look alot better than the standard fitment. Photo is of the box description and the box is stickered up Votex GmbH will put up some pictures tonight once Ive lugged them home.

-
Interesting indeed
-
I'm also curious to your findings :-)
-
Well I have unpackaged the speakers and I am still happy with my decision although one of the mid range speakers has marginal damage to the dust cover as well as the tweeter however for the money Im not going to complain!
Visually they look well put together and the woofer has some decent weight to it and a good range of movement on the cone, the woofer plastic housing is also formed as the outer shell of the speaker and the base of this has foam padding to cushion between the plastic and the metal of the door ensuring a tight and cushioned fit.
The Mid range speakers have the same polypropolene plastic cone and have a sturdy ABS plastic shell not much more to say about these without an original speaker to compare.
This set also includes a new cross-over this one isn't branded Phillips as the one already in the door but has the exact same shape, as this is the only thing not pictured in the other speaker sets I can only assume these are the items that make up the additional wiring kit mentioned earlier!
The tweeters appear to be well put together and have a suprising weight for there size and what looks to be an in-line noise supressor or frequency filter, the kit includes double sided foam pad for the fitment of these into the original position.
I also tried to use the hoover technik mentioned by Creatz to rectify the slight crushed tweeter either my hoover isnt powerful enough or the aluminium cone wont reform easily either way I will install and see if the damage interferes with the sound, if not since each item has its own item number I assume I can simply order a new tweeter unit on its own!
The kit also includes a full fitting kit including dlind rivets for the woofer screws and backing plates for the mid range and foam pad for the tweeter as well as a comprehensive fitting instruction manual.
All in all pretty impressed just hope they sound as I expect. Not full aftermarket install but an improved sound quality and sound range especially at the lower end of the frequency reproduction, the frequency range posted on the box certainly suggests they can handle a sound range equivalent to hertz 3 way components even if the power is lower.
Provided all the tools arrive in time I will have a crack at the left side on Thursday and provide some audible feedback and a visual comparison to the original fit once one side is removed.
-
cool i might get this speaker upgrade, seems bloody cheap!
-
Right well after a long day at work I decided to take on the task of replacing the speakers! And it was a mission. :sad1: It all would have been alot easier but the rivets didnt come out cleanly and I was left with 6 rivet nubs which wouldnt come out without a lot of persuasion with some pliers crimper tool and a hammer :scared:
Well now its done I think it has definitely been worth while as the sound is improved especially the bass but also the clarity of the mid and tweeter is much better I now have to spend at least the weekend with different quality speaker on both side of the car until I have the chance to change over the other side! :ashamed:
some comparison pics, I tried a video but the mic on my camera wasnt able to deal with the volume.

The old mid range and woofer were both 4ohm speakers the new is 8ohm this increase reduces the load on the RNS amplifier.

I will try and get a better sound comparison tomorrow by covering the mic but without decent kit I dont think it will really translate well but my own humble opinion is its going to be a worthwhile upgrade, even if not the most simple due to the use of rivets! But if your taking the door cards off for other reasons like me (fitting new door control modules and folding mirrors) then its a good time to switch your speakers out :happy2:
Also forgot to mention that it will also add some subtle extra eye candy for those with eagle eyes....
you can see the silver cones through the grills! :pomppomp:
-
i really like my audio but i think i need to replace this piece of crap RCD500, the 6 disc changer is nice but it sounds abit flat at the moment.
This does look like a good option for a quick speaker upgrade. I assume the connections are the same?
-
Richn83 were you able to fit the remaining speakers? Very interested to hear how it went and what the sound comparison/improvement is like.
Good work so far! :happy2:
-
So is the verdict thats its worth doing? :happy2:
-
The remaining speakers will be waiting until after next saturday when I pick up a new wing mirror housing and folding mirror switch up, dont want to have to take the door to pieces twice. :chicken:
Im definitely happy with the sound benefit over the original speakers clearer and better sounding bass. and at the moment I have the ability to do a side by side comparison im just not able to record the comparison for you guys as my camera microphone cant cope with a reasonable volume.
For £80 its worthwhile the difference in quality is clear from the pics and the added bonus the impedance is greater meaning the RNS amp doesnt have to work so hard. I will update again once I have done the other side. :happy2:
-
Can you Pm me the part number from the crossover rich...need to check it against ETKA
-
you should have all the part numbers now Alex.
Video of the speakers in action, difference in sound output is clearly obvious and a fitting tune given the start of the season today.

very nice write up thus far.
Have thought about perhaps installing a little bit of sound deadening and sound absorbing pads while doing the stereo upgrade?
If these two steps can vastly improve on the factory system.
-
Not planning on going that far Glidn I havent got any plans to go beyond the upgraded speaker install in the front (well at the moment) I havent been completely happy with the sound quality in the GTI since I got it before the RNS was fitted I used to drive around with the stereo off. I'm also trying to keep the car OEM so that anything which is too difficult to revert can be left in the car if I ever sell it on.
Have you done something along those lines in yours?
When I get round to doing the other door I will try and get a better right up and stages of the process if people are interested otherwise its fairly difficult to show how good speakeras are without decent sound recording gear :ashamed:
-
Richn83, I have read this thread and I am asking about the extra wiring kit, I assume it is not needed as everything is in the kit for a straight swap. Will seriously consider this as a upgrade.
Looking forward to more reports from you.

I have done this on a few guys mk5's here in New Zealand. In all honesty it makes a pretty good increase. It defers the back waves of the speakers off everywhere but back to the speakers.
You can usually run the speakers a little louder than current plus the front's seem to more bassy. etc. Another big bonus is the car becomes more quiet inside from the reduced road noise.
I have not had my mk5 since the 25 Jan 2011, only got it back on Friday 1 April 2011. No April fools joke I'm afraid.
But will be doing this to mine when the speakers eventually turn up.
-
Well after a painful Sunday I have fitted the driver side speakers all went well apart from the mare I had with the door controller and electric folding mirrors!
Got some basic pics of the install I was busy cracking on with it to take too many as I was changing almost every component in the door not just the spekaers but the controller mirror switch and mirror unit itself!
So you start with this
(https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_4kAgpBiQyvk/TZl9weoO6qI/AAAAAAAAAe8/nBccnL0gUVE/s800/IMAG0109.jpg)
How to is remove your door trim this is achieve by prying up the driver side door handle and switch block (note the handle itself is made of two bit of plastic dont pull both up as the bit under neath needs to slide back to unclip not up!)
Once you have the handle off unplug the electric window switch and mirror control switch, slide the remaining part of the handle backwards out of its holders to fully reveal the two screws, remove this and put somewhere safe.
Next remove the screw up at the front of the door by the tweeter sail, followed by the 3 screws along the base of the door that sit inside little recesses.
Next is the hard part as you need to use a trim tool or your hands to gently pry the door poppers that run up either side of the door front and rear edge I started at the bottom and worked my way up.
once it popped the door is hanging over the top of the door frame so you need to lift it up and un-hook it but very carefully as you only have a few inch's spare for cabling slack and you will need to remove the speaker cable to the mid range and the door controller cable which is released by moving the pink purple leaver.
The only remaning thing holding your door card on to the door is the handle release, this is a cable that is simply clipped into a holder so un hook the end of the cable and you can then unclip the plastic triangular guide that sits behind it releasing your door card and leaving you with this
(https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_4kAgpBiQyvk/TZl9wWMX_5I/AAAAAAAAAfA/MWU_UPcg-o8/s800/IMAG0110.jpg)
The easiest bits to do first is switch over the cross over for the new speakers, this is held in with 3 long bolts as expected its a straight forward swop with identical plugs and fixing points, follow this with the mid range which is held in place with 4 screws.
Now the simple bits are done I tackled the woofer which is held in with 6 rivets, using a metal drill bit and a hand held drill I drilled the heads of the rivets out releasing the speaker but on both sides I was left with stubs.
which I managed to eventually drill out or used pliers to make small enough to fit through the door the issue here is they spinn so using a handheld drill is the best option to avoid damage to the door and I attacked at various angles until the stub fell out. :scared:
Once out fish the stubbs out from inside the door there is a drain at the tip of the door if you push them along they will eventually fall out. Then re-rivet the speaker into place with the plug at the top, the aperture for the speaker is shaped with a flat surface at the top so you will find it difficult to install it the wrong way round.
Tweeter next, there is a screw that holds the plastic sail in place remove this and the sail will pull away it is held in place by 3 clips so start at the bottom where the cables disappear and work your way up, once off remove the foam backing and use a knife to scrape the melted plastic off the 3 posts and the tweeter will pry up and come away from the housing.
The speaker fitting kit comes with a double sided foam ring for securing the tweeter and has the holes in the plastic to sit on the 3 posts the kit advices using glue to re cement the top of the posts but I found the self adhesive ring sufficient as the rough posts also held the unit in place (I struggled to pull it off the post as I trial fitted without the adhesive ring :ashamed: )
You now have to reattach the tweeter sail and make sure the new cabling is secure and out the way of the fasteners, before re-fitting the door card you need to remove all the clips that might still be stuck in the door using a coat hanger is shown on you tube for this job and it works too a point but be prepared to get incredibly annoyed with it.
Refit everything in reverse order but I would suggest once you have re-hung the door card with everything plugged in that you test all speakers and switches are working before re-attaching the poppers on the door card.
Then repeat for the other side :surprised:
-
cannot wait to hear these!
-
Drive back last night was great nice clear sound and I could have the sound at the point where I couldnt hear a thing without it feeling droll and muffled like with the standard speakers, if the driver mirror was doing what it should have been then it would have been a great drive as I had the coil packs done and some new plugs in and the car was feeling brilliant frisky wanting to rev and much better mpg than normal
-
You better be at the JnH this month :signLOL:
-
You better be at the JnH this month :signLOL:
Date dependant I think it would be rude not too :drinking:
-
OooooooO i am really tempted for this...lets see how long i can resist. What are the results like anyway? :congrats:
-
There is a comparison video a bit further up Left side changed right side standard, you cant hear the bass as camera microphone is no good but the mid and treble is much better defined, in person the bass is better and the sound is more whole and rounded with good clarity I now find myself with the volume higher than I could stand with the standard setup.
I also havent had any issues with rattling door cards, guess the OEM fitment helps with that. I am hoping to be at the next JnH meet so peeps can have a listen and form their own opinions as sound systems are very subjective. I like it alot though
-
Looks good pal :happy2:
Once you had the rivets out I assume the speakers just screwed into the holes?
-
The new kit comes with replacement rivets mate :happy2:
-
Im not buying the kit, just replacing speakers
-
If you are just replacing the speakers, youll normally need to either...
rivet the new ones in
or
get the speaker adapter plates to mount the new speakers in properly and screw those in
-
As Alex says the new speakers where rivetted into place if you wanted to use screws you would need to have something to provide a threading point for them as the holes are more bolt sized than screw sized. As mentioned you either need proper adaptors or you need to rip out your existing speaker and use the plastic to create a speaker housing. Reason for this is even the standard speakers wouldnt have enough clearance to the second door skin if the housing didnt hold them an inch and a half to two inches away from the inner door skin.
Not sure if that makes perfect sense but basically you need an adapter to fit normal speakers.
-
Dragging this out of the grave in the hopes you guys can help me?
I discovered a blown woofer in the passenger door of my 58 plate GTi. I took a punt on this upgrade kit thinking I'd replace it all.
Took the door card off and replaced the woofer no problems BUT my car has a different smaller tweeter plug which doesn't fit the new tweeter and no crossover or midrange speaker to replace.
Is there a additional wiring loom I can pick up that will allow me to fit the cross over, mid range and upgraded tweeter or have I just wasted a lot of money to buy one woofer and a box of spares?
edit - kit is labelled 5MO 051 608 A
Thanks for any help.
Andy

Where did you find the kit as I'm after one?
-
We're talking about your front passenger door right?
The kit should look like this?..
It's a front door speaker kit for the 10 speaker system and should be plug n play if you have the 10 speaker system which your GTI should have?
I wouldn't mind one of these kits myself but not any cheap sets going these days
-
Only early gtis had 10 speaker systems as standard. After late 2005ish it was an option and most cars rolled out with 8 not 10.
You can splice into the woofers wiring and run wires to the mids thats easiest to do and works fine.
-
Where did you find the kit as I'm after one?
Kit came from eBay - I paid £70 Buy It Now from this seller but it looks like a one off.

Yes, the front passenger door though now I've replaced a blown woofer I'd like to fit the whole kit in both doors.
That's the same kit - but there is no wiring for the cross over or the midrange and the tweeter plugs are different.
Only early gtis had 10 speaker systems as standard. After late 2005ish it was an option and most cars rolled out with 8 not 10.
You can splice into the woofers wiring and run wires to the mids thats easiest to do and works fine.
Yes, whoever specced the car from new only put in the RCD300 so I assume they didn't care about music :) They didn't fit cruise either so perhaps they just wanted the performance.
I did figure it wouldn't be that big a deal to splice in the tweeter as the wiring there are only a couple of wires in each plug and one is marked with a black stripe so is presumably negative.
I can only get that plug wrong once :)
The cross over has 10 unlabelled black wires going into the plug alone so I'm a bit lost as to what to splice to where.
I'd like to use the crossovers rather than push bass frequencies through the little mids if it can be done, otherwise I'll probably just leave them out as little speakers trying to push bass is probably worse than not having them in there at all.
I was hoping there was a simple loom to go with the upgrade kit but it looks like I'm out of luck. I haven't actually spoken to VW so might see if the main dealer has any parts listed.
Thanks for replies guys, I'd almost given up on getting any help :)
EDIT here are some phone pics of the set up and the connectors.

Thats a shame, did you buy it a while ago as I can't find the completed item so I can ask them.
Hope you can find a simple kit for wiring, however with a wiring diagram I'm sure you could make a loom up

September last year. The completed listing is dead I'm afraid you could always contact the seller through their shop?
Googling the part number "5MO 051 608 A" comes up with this in Germany - but expensive!

I had to wait ages for a good day with time to fit it - no garage available.
At the moment I have an all original set apart from one better woofer but I don't want to strip the doors down until I know how to fit the rest of the kit.
I could perhaps tour the breakers and take the looms out of the doors of an earlier GTi or the same with a 10 speaker kit but I struggle to find the will to deal with those guys let alone the time :(

They have replied to my message, and they don't know if they will get anymore.
Let me know how you get on with this as my golf has the 10 speaker set up, so if you ever want to sell and get something else let me know

Gladen do a kit. Not cheap though. But bet it would sound better than the standard kit.

Cheers I'll keep you in mind but don't hold your breath - I'm not keen to drill out the rivets on that woofer again - I must have rubbish drill bits because it took ages.

Good find dazza, also a couple more to bear in mind...
Rainbow have a kit in their IQ Line range (not plug and plug though, wiring etc needed. Unless they also do a proper IQ line kit?
ETON have plug and play kits for front and rear
:happy2:

Those Gladen speakers look excellent.

Here is an install in a R32.

Just bought some 3 way Rainbow Vanadium component speakers for my mk5. Don't suppose anyone on here know where I could get them professionally installed? Tried doing something similar myself with a friend on my mk4 and it turned into a nightmare, so would rather have someone who knows what their doing install them this time.

Hmmm maybe Gladen kit could be on the cards, would they need to be amped?

In theory no. But it would be a shame not to.

I'm running a pioneer head unit, 50w output, better than a 510, but I assume amps are 100-150ish?

I'm no pro with car audio. So don't want to give any bad advice. But my hsk's sound better with more power going to them. I originally installed a 4 channel amp lost interest as the build was taking months so never installed the rear speakers. At the moment i'm running the front speakers bridged they sound pretty good. But any decent speakers running from the head unit will be an improvement over the stock setup.
If you are splashing out on some decent speakers deaden the doors.
A bit of info in my build thread

Depends which amp you get! But you can get a decent one for £150 2nd hand.
