I remember alot of threads from guys watching the BTCC last season, so i thought we could start up a new thread just like the F1.
Qie a few interesting changes in the teams.
One close to all you golf fanatics and AMD fans.
AMDMilteks Mk5 Golf GTI no longer has the crap underpowered engine of last season, and are now running a 2.0TFSI which they should be pretty familiar with.
On a more important note, they have changed driver, Shaun Holamby has moved out of the driver position and into the Managerial role, to be replaced with Tom Onslow-Cole. That can only be a good thing , because hes pretty handy behind the wheel of a good car. Maybe a more competitive season is in the making for AMDMiltek   http://www.btcc.net/html/generalnews_detail.php?id=2288 (http://www.btcc.net/html/generalnews_detail.php?id=2288)
Dave pinkney is running a RWD Audi A4 TFSI for this season. Shame 4wd cars are banned, as when the original quattro audi A4s joined years ago they wiped the floor with the field.

I heard that AMDs car now isnt even tuned by AMD... but by Lehmann!
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/90075
-
you might be right then. i though Lehmann were just building and supplying the engines to the BTCC spec for them. I presumed AMD would do their own mapping
-
Seen this on FB earlier today hope it works out and they are a top contender...
-
Lehmann supplied last years engines as well.
I thought the ECU were all controlled and sealed anyway.

I thought the ECU were all controlled and sealed anyway.
Maybe, but then the performance of the cars differ quite alot and the fact that guys use different engines would make that difficult surely.
I thought the new sealed ECUs were what they were planning for the next generation touring car NGTC cars.
-
These are NGTC Sy.
http://www.btcc.net/pdf/regulations_2011.pdf
-
from what i gather there a a couple cars running the new TOCA-NGTC turbo engines, but they will remain restricted until 2013 to remain competitive agaisnt the S2000 spec TC's. From then on the S2000 spec engines/cars will become obsolete and the TOCA NGTC cars will be unrestricted.
Reading up on it, the NGTC has been designed to allow much more people to join the BTCC as the car can be fully built for £125k whihc is crazy cheap for a racing car when you think about it.
Cosworth are providing the ECU, dash and data logging equipment for them. Teams have a choice of leasing their engines from TOCA or developing their own engine tat conforms to the TOCA NGTC regulations.
-
and Shaun H is no longer driving the Golf this year...he's handed the seat over to the tame racing driver that is Tom Onslow-Cole.
Now that should really make it interesting! :happy2:
Lehmann builds engines for many race teams..they're quite well known. Shaun obviously likes them despite the S2000 spec engine they built for him last year and this year is intrusting them to build an NGTC spec TFSI based engine. I have a feeling VW Motorsport might be involved too in building that engine.
-
There is alos a GT race meet at Easter weekend at Oulton Park, with a few Volkswagen races, i got free tickets :P
Perks of the in laws being race marshalls :signLOL: :pomppomp:
-
I happened to be at AMD Essex on Friday and Shaun intoduced me to Tom Onslow-Cole who was setting up the car, I'm sure if the lad gets a sensible hair cut and an early night he'll do OK

Not good news from the media day at silverstone. Golf did 1 lap...word is the newly built engine by Lehmann might have bent a rod.
The Leon using identical built engine survived 3 laps before having problems.
Shaun must be thinking not again.
Maybe time to buy the TOCA spec Toyota engine instead at least that shold be reliable.
-
was just about to ask if anyone knew what happened?
heres the lap times for all the drivers, and no TOm Onslow-Cole on it anywhere

Gutting. The old saying goes something like "in order to finish first, first you have to finish".
Seems that the Lehmann supplied engines were pants last year and they have built on that with the new ones. :sad1:

Some positive news for the AMD fans....they know what caused the problem and it's easily rectified so not as bad as first thought. They expect to be out at BH on Tuesday to give TOC some proper lappage.
:congrats:

Chungster... is tuesday open to the public?

AMDMiltek are in better form now. They managed over 100laps in testing yesterday
'Productive' test for Onslow-Cole
Tom Onslow-Cole had the ‘most productive test’ of his Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship career, while driving his AmD Milltek Racing.com VW Golf at Brands Hatch on Tuesday.
The Essex-based outfit suffered reliability issues with its new turbocharged NGTC-engined Golf at official testing during last week’s annual BTCC Media Day at Silverstone, bringing its running to a premature end.
However, Onslow-Cole was able to clock-up more than 100 laps on the Brands Hatch Indy circuit on Tuesday, working on the car’s reliability and adapting setups to suit his driving style.
AmD Milltek Racing.com team principal Shaun Hollamby, who raced a Golf in the BTCC last season, commented: “Our test at Brands Hatch was really good and I’m pleased with how it went. It was how we hoped it would be on Media Day.
“After the problems we suffered at Silverstone we’re still going to be doing some setup work on the Saturday before race day. The main thing for us yesterday was to make sure the car ran reliably. We can now concentrate on performance.
“Handling-wise the car is a big improvement on the Ford Focus Tom drove last year – I know that from being behind him last season, as it looked a massive handful. By the end of the day, Tom was clearly fully committed – that was obvious watching him get the back end out at Surtees – and he said to me that it was the most productive test day of testing he has ever done,” reported Hollamby.
After running at the back of the field for most of 2010, Hollamby is hoping Onslow-Cole’s influence will help the team break into the top ten, starting with this weekend’s season opener at Brands Hatch (2-3 April).
Im not sure he was ever close enough last season to even see the focus's handling. They were more often than not fighting for the podium, with the golf bringing up the rear.
Keen to see how they get on this season though. There should be soe really good mid field scraps this season. From what ive read, the likes of MAtt NEal are already saying Plato will take some beating.
Plato is using the old NA engines whihc are good on tyres. His Civic whilst being quick with the new NGTC engine has alot more torque so will not look after its tyres as well as platos chevy

MOre problems with AMD
http://TO-C puzzled by speed deficit
Tom Onslow-Cole says he’s puzzled by his VW Golf’s lack of speed in Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship qualifying at Brands Hatch.
Onslow-Cole, fourth in last year’s championship, could qualify no higher than 16th in the AmD Milltek Racing.com car – that was eight places and eight tenths of a second adrift of Tom Boardman’s Special Tuning SEAT Leon that is using the same turbocharged VW TFSI engine.
Adding to Onslow-Cole’s problems, he was also prevented from taking part in the session’s final ten minutes having caused a red flag for stopping briefly on the start-finish straight when his car’s throttle system malfunctioned.
But the New Malden racer’s big concern was a 7mph deficit to the front-runners through the speed traps.
He told btcc.net: “We didn’t expect this really. We thought the power was a given and that we’d have to sort the chassis out. This is a bit of a kick in the nuts.
“We’re 5mph down in one sector and 7mph down in another, so it’s quite a big speed difference. If we can find that extra speed I think we’ll be up there with the best of them – and we can find that power because Boardman is running the same engine and I think our chassis is better.
“We won’t know what the problem is until we send the engine back to our tuner, Lehmann in Liechtenstein. It could be an internal thing like an electrical fault or something in the mapping, but it’s doubtful we’ll find an overnight cure. It’s a bit of a head-scratcher at the moment.

Neil took pole
Neal takes first pole of 2011
Matt Neal has qualified on pole position for the opening round of the 2011 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship at the Brands Hatch circuit in Kent.
Worcestershire’s Neal, driving his Honda Racing Team’s new turbocharged Civic, set a qualifying lap record of 48.210s to achieve pole. Over such a short lap (the Brands Indy circuit is just 1.2 miles in length) that was a staggering 0.255s clear of his rivals, headed by young charger Andrew Jordan in his Pirtek Racing Vauxhall Vectra – like Neal, also using a turbo engine built to the BTCC’s latest Next Generation Touring Car regulations.
Third was the reigning Champion Jason Plato in his Silverline Chevrolet Cruze while another youngster, James Nash in his turbocharged 888 Racing with Collins Contractors Vectra, put in a late burst of speed to secure fourth place on the starting grid for the first of tomorrow’s three races.
Neal, BTCC Champion in 2005 and 2006 and runner-up to Plato last season, said: “What a start and we’ve probably even surprised ourselves with that gap. But the race will be different – we can’t sustain that pace every lap and all the turbo runners are expecting to suffer greater tyre wear over the second half of the race whereas Jason is not too far away. He’ll come on really strong as the race progresses so starting ahead of him in particular is exactly where I need to be.”
Jordan, aged just 21 from Lichfield, added: “I was fastest in the morning practice sessions and knew the pace would increase again in qualifying but perhaps not quite by that much! I’m confident I can give Matt a good run over a race distance, but the one I’m really watching is Jason – that Chevrolet is notoriously good at looking after its tyres and he is the big threat for all of us.”
But Plato, who starts the new season equal with Andy Rouse’s record of 60 wins, begged to differ. The Oxford racer commented: “That really is everything we’ve got in our tank – we’ve gone quicker than the pole record we set here last October yet the gap to Matt is still nearly four tenths of a second which is a bit of a shock. The other teams have clearly done a great job in the winter. There is all this talk about the turbo cars having tyre worries but until we actually find out tomorrow then that’s all it is… talk!”
Completing the top six in qualifying were Plato’s young Cumbrian team-mate Alex MacDowall and Warwickshire’s Mat Jackson in the local Wrotham-based Airwaves Racing team’s Ford Focus. Dorset's Tom Chilton had looked set to challenge Neal for pole but instead dropped to seventh when his best time was disallowed after his Team Aon Ford Focus failed a mandatory ride height check.
At least he took part in qualifying. Having to sit out the session after a high-speed crash in morning practice badly damaged his car was Neal’s team-mate Gordon Shedden. The Fife racer, third in last year’s BTCC, is therefore set to start tomorrow’s first race from the back of the 23-car grid.

Funny how the engine was the problem last year and they continue to use Lehmann.
Not that you can draw any conclusions from that.
I do hope they get it sorted.

7 hours of motorsport goodness tomorrow w00h00 :pomppomp:

I know but Lehmann have big history with VW Motorsport and building race engines. It's not like they're a small outfit. But it depends if the Leon engine is built by them too...Special Tuning have not said who's building it but it is a well known outfit. If both are done by Lehmann...then Shaun will be quite peeved if his one is deemed to be lacking in ooompah.

but Boardman is using that same engine? So if his is fine, maybe were looking to far into it. Could be a minor issue. who knows. The missus wants to go out for mothers day tomorrow, but i said she would miss the touring cars and wouldnt wish that on her, especially on mothering sunday.
I tell you who im keen to do really well, and thats Nicholas Hamilton. He takes his first ever race in a clio cup race car tomorrow

i for one would love him to do really well, hes always looked dead chuffed for lewis when ever he has raced. I jhope hes right up there in the midfield. Cant see him getting any higher on his debut. Its a pretty insane race, more entertaining than the BTCC for overtaking and crazy overtakes as well. lewis is doing a 13k round trip to be there as well.
-
He's already had his first race yesterday, qualified last and finished last but good on him for having a go tho! Not like he's had the same experience from young age as Lewis so it's bound to take a bit of time for him to get used to it
-
TCR will give him a good car, but the Clio's are really competitive so he will take a few races to get to grips with the car before he can start mixing it with the mid field pack. Plenty of testing needed methinks!!
-
Oooh they just said the Seat has a Lehmann built TFSI engine too!

New lad in the airwaves focus, hit a BMW up the trummpet :signLOL: Resulted in both with broken suspension!

Why not hand the car over to Revo........................ only thing they would then need to do is have several engines in back up in case Revo keep up their Reputation :chicken:
Hope they sort it out quickly

Bloody seat drivers...WTF was he doing! Just rammed the golf on first corner both cars out. Idiot.

Liam Griffin didn't see the cars slowing at Druids on warm up just rammed into Rob Collard.

Better result for Tom in the final race. Fingers crossed they can find the missing ponies before Donny.
Interesting that Boardman started behind and finished several seconds ahead with the same engine. :scared:

Good finish in final race ,25 secs behind finishing 1st .Just need to find 1 second a lap over 24 laps to compete better.
Encouraging, and for once no retirement :happy2:

The result on the grid doesnt say alot tbh, there were alot of DNFs. however there were still a few cars behind that couldnt get past so that is positive and good to actually get a decent finish i guess. If i was shaun id be going apesh!t at the engine builders.
-
Some big offs on the BTCC today. Especially Plato, and they go tit back out on track for the next race and he finished 6th :congrats: :congrats: :congrats:
On-slow cole didnt do to bad either in the AMD Golf.
I think the civics are by far the strongest car on the grid

He had a great start in that final race until he got taken out. Hopefully the Golf's form will keep improving!
-
Good news for AMDs golf. 6th fastest in qualifying. :congrats: lets hope its clean racing for them toorrow and dont get tangled up with other guys, especially like last week when they werent even involved in the scuffle at all
yet again, the civics are on fire, this time with Gordon shedden topping the time tables. would prefer him to win thean Matt Neil. not really sure why im not hi biggest fan, but i just dont follow him
-
When we were walking round the pits Jason Plato walked past.
He was stopped by a bloke with 2 kids, chatted and signed autographs.
Means a lot to me if a driver is approachable shame the car is off the pace.
-
Was some good racing today! The golf didnt do too badly, still a shame about the reliability issues striking just before race 2! Nice to see Shedden get a result too despite "Team Orders"

What do yo uguys make of Platos ranting. not often you see a driver get so full on in front of the camera.
I can sort of see where hes coming from there is meant to be a parity with the performance of the cars and the hondas are by far the most powerful in a straightline. But it just so happens they handle and break as good as if not better than everyone else.
Also what was NEal playing at today. Shocking day of racig for him. Lucky that hes still leading the points
