has anybody done it? the search function didnt throw much up!? could do with a walkthrough. whats the deal with the hole in the back? filled it in? might do it this weeknd as it will really smarten up the arse end, just need to know how :happy2:
-
it will just be a matter of taking the motor out and filling the hole in the glass with a black rubber grommet. can get them from b&q etc
-
Yes it's been done!
Try searching on the golfmkv.com forums for a diy.
-
I use mine far too much to remove it.
The rear of the mk5 just seems to suck dirt onto the rear screen.
-
yep i couldnt do without mine. i hate driving my dads car, its a saloon without a rear wiper. does my head in on a rainy night. you cant tell if you have a police car behind or not!
-
Hasn't JonnyC done it?
I think you'd have to just lace it with rain-x I guess?
-

Then grommet with silicone sealant too and then cover the screen in RainX
:happy2:
-
so where would i get a bung from? also rainx?? whats this?
-
rainx is a chemical you coat your glass in and it repels water, kind of like a clear wax
the grommets can be sourced from DIY or motor factors
-
I took mine off to do the boot latch replacement. Getting the wiper and motor off is easy, getting the boot trim back on and aligning all the metal clips tests you powers of patience a little :innocent:
-

Halfords sell a 3 pack, and rainx too id imagine.
Its not difficult either.
-
....
I would not wish to be without my rear wiper - Far too valuable a help in seeing behind. Rainex is very limited without a wiper.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fb308%2FRedRobin_05%2FRED_BlackBum200.jpg&hash=870deb0405bd05171fb3256ae0dff989359217a6)
^ This was the result of one 300 mile journey, not from leaving uncleaned for weeks.

i love that pic
-
Yeah I have mine de-wipered...
Looks way cleaner IMO.. I just use Rain-X and its fine..
-
Just use your side mirrors nearly all the vans on the road just use side mirrors. I reckon i have used my rear wipe once.
-
i love that pic
....Then you'll probably love this one too. TC does! : -

i wouldn't be able to get off my drive without my wiper as i have to reverse up a walled lane so i think your all mad :P

....I hope your joking! Haven't you noticed how big and also multi-faceted van mirrors are?
Yes, it looks cool from the outside but don't you put safety considerations first?
-
Having tinted rear windows is just as bad as no wiper in some situations. I don't see it as being unsafe TBH - just clean the rear window with a cloth if it's getting mucky mid-journey?
-
etto honestly, but this made me laugh mate
- just clean the rear window with a cloth if it's getting mucky mid-journey?
....i'm sure VW invented something to do this for you so you don't have to keep getting out :P
...oh wait.....hang on.....
:jumpmove:

....Another good reason not to have tinted windows.
VC gave you the perfect reply :signLOL:

I'm actually quite miffed the Scirocco and probably the new GTI have 3/4 tints as standard - I really don't like them, if I wanted something that looked like a van, I'd buy a van!
I'm sure they have their uses for kids etc, just not for me.
-
I'm sure they have their uses for kids etc, just not for me.
....Perhaps VW have twigged that most GTI owners are just big kids!
I agree though. Better to let people add their tints aftermarket if that's what they want. ETTO etc.

Well, there's only one way of finding out!!
What do you do with the washer jet? clamp it?

good point, johnny should be along soon to tell us what he did!
-
....
I mentioned a "safety" consideration earlier.
What I'm saying is that maximising your ability to see rearwards is an important AID to taking all factors into consideration when road driving. Why create blind spots? Track driving is obviously different.
There are other ways to look cool/kool.
IMO & ETTO
-

Pull the pipe off the pump at the front of the car behind the left hand grill and block it off. that way it ensures no leaks in the car if accidentally pressed

There are thousands of small vans with just normal mirrors i have one and i have never had any safety issues, honestly you could block out my rear window and i would hardly notice. I would only look threw it as i blow you away and give you a little wave. :driver:

^^^^
 Is it a small white van by any chance?

Hey Joe,
I have taken mine off...really easy, I first used a bung but thought that this looked  so I then got a glass insert from venom motorsport...this looked way better.
Also a tip if you do it this way then use duck tape to hold it in place.

or you can just code out the wash/wipe on the rear with vag com, id be happy to do that for you joe. ive not tested it but if the option is there, i cant see it not working
-
Is there a specific fuse for the rear washer/wiper that could be pulled ?
-
Is there a specific fuse for the rear washer/wiper that could be pulled ?
I believe there is...think this is what I did. but cant quite remember
-
i think the wash wipe on the front and back shares the same fuse, could be wrong though
-
There is a way to deactivate the rear wiper completely using vagcom, my dealer did it by accident when I had my cruise control fitted
-
jay, you fancy taking vagcom to UD?
-
@ mongy, just called venom motorsport and the wanted 20quid +VAT for the glass insert!! foook that! how much did you pay, may just order one from the german site jaywoo mentioned.
-
I paid less than a tenner delivered!
-
il order a glass one from the .de site :happy2: cheers buddy
-
Hey joe,
Yeah I got ripped off....mush have felt flush at the time!! :)
Defo use duck tape though joe you can get it to set nice and flush.
-
just orderd a bung, so will do it this weekend,
so is there a definate answer to the washer?
