Title: loud squeel
Post by: gazon69 on March 25, 2011, 06:00:38 pm
hi guys. just wondered if anyone can shed any light on a problem I have with my gti. I drove it today and not really driving it hard a loud squealing noise has just appears. my first thoughts was a sticking brake caliper, but after coming to a halt the noise carried on. on arrival at my home I popped the bonnet and found the noise to be coming from around the gearbox area. initial thoughts are the dmf, just wondered if anyone else has experienced this or can offer any help. cheers Gaz. p.s car has done 70k on a 56plate

Normally a loud squeel like that is the alternator belt, normally that starts when its a cold morning and carries on for a bit depending how loose it is.  :happy2:

deffo not alternator belt buddy. I have checked that and all seems fine. as  :driver:I said the noise sounds as if it is coming from where the engine meets the gearbox so god knows. just hoping it ain't the flywheel. can do without that at the moment. one other thing I have noticed is that when driven normally it doesn't seem to do it, it only seems to occur when the car is hot and I have given it a bit of stick, when I go on the power it stops, come off the throttle and it starts. Could it be water pump or cambelt bearing??????????

Does noise dissapear/change as you depress the clutch?

Had similar worries from the same sort of noises, turned out to be my tyres picking up gravel/small stuff and dropping it between the rear brake disc protectors (thin pressed steel) and the brake disc. It also sounds like the noise is coming from the front of the car until I got a friend to drive it whilst I stood outside the car. Makes the same sort of noise you describe.
