Title: RNS-510 thinks it's in Germany until it gets a lock on...
Post by: CocoPops on March 26, 2011, 09:48:42 pm
So, I fitted the RNS510 but every time I switch the car off and back on again, it thinks its in Germany until it gets a sat lock.

I thought it would remember where it was switched off and lock on quicker.

It's called Regensburg Syndrome Lee after the town where it thinks you are.

It only normally occurs if you can't see sats. Possibly later firmwares help but I seem to remember that was a pretty late one anyway.

Have you had a look to see how many sats are being seen Lee?

No, I couldn't remember where to look Stu :)

It's not a massive issue, but just wondered if it was normal :)

Unless you keep the car with a clear view of the Sats then this is something that you have to live with I'm afraid. Many variations of firmware have been tried but none seem to completely eradicate it.

If you install the 276X firmware that is linked in this thread

http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,23779.0.html

Then the problem will be reduced to clearing within 30 seconds. That's the longest I have had to wait (only seems to be that long if been in underground car parks) but generally it goes within 5-10 secs.

Whilst on the map display press "map" again and you get an on screen menu. Select "GPS View" from the drop down menu and that will tell you how many satellites are being seen. You don't really want to have locked any less than 3 of the amount visible ( 6/9 for example ) if you are losing more than 3 try and get your antenna as close to the top of the dash as poss. Mine is actually on the dash itself.
