Title: petrol tank
Post by: jamma on March 28, 2011, 08:12:18 pm
Hi all - quick question about the petrol tank.  Light came on earlier and by the time I got to a petrol station it only had 10 miles left according to dash. I fill it up and cant get more than just under 50 litres in, now its a 55 litres tank so do I assume that when it reaches 0 miles left I still have 5 litres ?

cheers

When it showed 10 miles left that is just an estimate based on your very recent driving. If you were driving it like you stole it on the way to the petrol station, then even though it was saying 10 miles left in the tank, you could drive really cautiously and probably get 30 miles out of it. It predict's the distance left in the tank by recent driving.  :rolleye:

The range computer is always going to air on the side of caution as you shouldnt run the tank dry.  It also isn't safe to assume that you have the range it says, as its based on the previous x minutes driving usage and if the last time you drove you were cruising getting 30-35mpg but after that you drive and only manage 10-15 mpg round town in traffic then that figure can drop off quickly.

As above, the system predicts the range based on your previous driving habit, and will err on the side of caution.

If you drive really hard, fill up and look at the predicted range, it may say something like 280 miles but if for the next few minutes, you drive carefully, it's recalculate to something like 320 miles.

Yes true I filled up and it said 340 miles then it went up to 355 miles.

I've had mine go up from 10 to 25miles but then also when I've been caught out manage to get 10miles out of it reading 0 but I didn't like that at all and I don't play petrol station roulette any more lol

Mine's currently sitting at home saying 15 on the reading. But have to say when driving it yesterday it went down from 30-15 in only 3-4 miles :surprised:

A visit to the Shell garage tonight (only couple of miles away).

Anyone filled up this week? Prices come down?

I'm based in NW London.

The price was also £1.379 at my local. Glad I don't use the GTI for commuting.
