Title: OEM Nav and iPod question
Post by: darkside on March 28, 2011, 11:07:57 pm
I have just picked up my new car (MK5 Golf) and it comes with the VW MFD2 sat nav unit (pic below). The plan was to take that out and replace with an aftermarket unit but it is not as bad as I thought it would be.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fc246%2Fbondy123%2FSAM_0976.jpg&hash=c628e79ead4515f2c3052b90e40518692f2780b5)

So now it is staying I want to connect an ipod to the unit. Is it possible to connect the ipod to the unit but still retain the oem cd changer and have full control and track listing on the screen?

Also is it possible to have a video feed from the ipod to the screen?

As I will also be running a active front end in this car, 2 or 3 way not decided as yet, would a UCS Pro be happy with a hi/lo level converter or would I be better off going for an Audison Bit One or JBL MS8 for integration?

Any help would be appreciated

The MFD2 has no support for an iPod apart from through the CD changer or an Aux input - in either case, no track listings on display

It also does not support video in from an iPod or otherwise.

RNS510 with MDI if you want those features im afraid.

Good, its better than the MFD2 from my experience and in my opinion.  Its only through a cacky phone camera but I have a video of my RNS showing the difference between original and old speakers in the GTI in this thread

Aye it is better, as the RNS510 employs 'loudness' by default giving a better dynamic range and enhanced sound quality over the MFD2 - I upgraded my one for this reason amongst others.

When the MFD is balanced properly in the sound settings, you can get the sound quite resonable. Need to increase the mid and bass though
